New York based saxophonist/composer Seamus Blake, recognized as one of the finest exponents of contemporary jazz. John Scofield, who hired Seamus for his “Quiet Band,” called him “extraordinary, a total saxophonist.” Throughout his 24 year career, Seamus has garnered considerable critical praise for his masterful playing, his fine compositional skills and for his facility as a leader. He has been a featured on the New York scene for 20 years, working with the Mingus Big Band, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Nicki is a well-known jazz singer and music educator, teaching pop and jazz voice at the LCM and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Expect very lively, Funky Jazz music, great grooves and decadent improvised solos form unexpected covers to original tunes written by and for the quartet. Flying Machines is the new band from guitarist LCoM alumnus Alex Munk, featuring some of the UK’s brightest young jazz stars. Flying Machines has established a sound that is entirely its own, fusing rock guitar improv with anthemic melodies and lusciously textured soundscapes. Dave Kane’s octet is a new group featuring players from the burgeoning Leeds jazz scene. They have a great groove and feature punchy and brassy unison passages that led into some collective improvisation and then into individual solos. The music has great energy and attractive textures. A very special afternoon double bill in Leeds featuring the Eastgate Big Band and rising London sax star Camilla George with her new quartet.
Eastgate Big Band play Michael Jackson with Vocals: Mared Williams Rhythm: Josh Smouth, Sam Foster, Alistair Rhodes, Kieran Gunter, Joe Boyes Saxes: Dan Brunskill, Jasmine Whalley, James Boyes, Rose Perry, Max Williams Trombones: Danny Barley, Elliot Crouch, Charlie Knighton, Pat Martin Trumpets: Ciaran Diston, Tom Hill, Dan Coulthurst, Rich Hodgson.
This programme pays tribute to the king of pop, reimagining some of the most well known tunes from the powerhouse albums that define the modern pop genre, “Off the Wall” and “Thriller”, as well as hits from the likes of MJ kingpin Quincy Jones and big band pioneers Buddy Rich and Woody Herman.
Following on from that we host the first date on the debut tour by one of the UK's most dynamic young talents, sax player Camilla George (from Jazz Jamaica), with a brilliant ensemble featuring Sarah Tandy (piano), Daniel Casimir (bass) and Femi Koleoso (drums). Camilla's new album "Isang" was released on 13 January 2017 on Ubuntu Records
