Here's a quick email to remind you of what's coming up at jazz-at-heart:

1. Monday workshops continue every week until December 11th. From 7.30-9 p.m. all welcome/ We're spending a few weeks on each tune at the moment, which means we're learning them well! Drop in when you can, or come every week - it's up to you. £8 per session.
2. The next jam session is this coming Friday (3rd November). All welcome and a great house band led by Jeff Hewer! Music from 7.30-10.39. Come and play/sing or just listen. Free entry - collection for band.

Hull Jazz Festival programme 11-18 November

Hull Jazz Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style this November with a special 9-day festival packed with the best in US and UK jazz talent 11th-18th November 

20-time Grammy winner and the man who re-invented the jazz guitar sound for a new generation of players, Pat Metheny headlines on Saturday 11 November at Hull City Hall. Joined by a new quartet featuring UK pianist Gwilym Simcock, exceptional bassist Linda Oh and long-time collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, Metheny will perform a brand new set of music from his eagerly awaited new album, to be released soon on Nonesuch records.

Closing the festival on Saturday 18 November, Manchester-based jazz electronica trio GoGo Penguin perform their stunning new live score to Goddfrey Reggio’s cult cinema classic Koyaanisqatsi in the grand surroundings of Hull City Hall. Moving from fragile beauty to powerful frenzy, their rich new score reflects the original themes of the film, creating an intense audio-visual experience.

On Wednesday 15 November at Früit, Brooklyn-based urban power jazz trio Moon Hooch bring their pulsating, sax-driven live show to Hull for the first time. Banned from the New York subway by the NYPD when their impromptu busking shows became a public order hazard, they call their sound acoustic techno – combining years of staging underground dance parties with incredible musicianship and phenomenal crowd engagement.

The festival opens at Hull Truck Theatre on the afternoon of Saturday 11 November with A Brief History of the Coolest Instrument of the World. Created and performed by Chris Montague of Troyka, the show celebrates the milestones of 80s years of the electric guitar in popular culture, paying tribute to Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix and more guitar greats. The show also offers the chance to amateur players to join Chris on stage in a guitar ensemble brought together specially for this one-off performance.

On Sunday 12 November at the Royal Hotel, saxophonist Andy Sheppard Quartet perform tracks from their much-anticipated forthcoming album Beyond the Dancing Sun. Led by Sheppard, the quartet also features the other-worldly guitar and electronic sounds of Eivind Aarset and ace rhythm team Michel Benita on bass and Sebastian Rochford on drums.

Hull Truck Theatre plays host to clarinettist Arun Ghosh and his new quintet on Thursday 16 November. They’ll be performing tracks from Arun’s new album but where are you really from? Influenced by his Indie-kid upbringing in Manchester, the new album sees him move away from his trademark Indo-jazz sound towards more song-like structures and psychedelic textures.

A double bill in the Studio at Hull Truck Theatre on Friday 17 November kicks off with the world premiere of two new pieces, commissioned as part of the festival’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Guitarist Stuart McCallum has created a surround-sound love song to the guitar and Hull's own Revenu, featuring Liam van Rijn and Joseph Bird, present a haunting and vivid audio-visual piece inspired by the sights and sounds of Hull.

Wrapping up the Friday Studio programme, Snarky Puppy founder, composer, producer and jazz maestro Bill Laurance performs a rare intimate solo show. He'll be exploring his first love - the piano - enhanced with the addition of subtle electronics. An alumni of the University of Leeds, Laurance heads back to the region for the only Northern show in his European tour.

There’s fun for all the family at Hull Truck Theatre on the afternoon of Saturday 18 November, with vocalist Zoe Gilby and her Family Jazz All Stars. A fun-packed, whistle-stop tour of jazz favourites from through the ages.

And carrying on Hull Jazz Festival’s tradition of supporting emerging talent, Saturday 18 November sees a special performance featuring young players from Hull and East Riding.  A Journey with the Giants of Jazz, a new piece by Peter Edwards celebrating six giants of the jazz world born in 1917, will be performed by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, directed by Peter Edwards. The show will start with performances of works by the six jazz giants, performed by young people from local schools.

David Porter, Director of J-Night, says: “2017’s a big year for Hull Jazz Festival, with the year-long celebrations for Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and our 25th birthday. After a string of sold out shows in July, we’re back in November with another line-up that showcases the broad range of styles that make up contemporary jazz. The jazz scene’s buzzing just now, and so’s Hull – come see for yourself!”

As you may have already heard we are sadly coming to the end of an era of JazzintoDoncaster.

We now present the Grand Finale featuring two of the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra bands - the Doncaster Youth Stage Band and Swing Orchestra.

DYSB is a training band. Young players are introduced to a wide variety of jazz styles via carefully selected graded orchestrations. DYSO is the intermediate and training level and the second tier of our ensembles. Young musicians explore the popular songs of the Swing Era alongside more complex styles of the modern day Big Band.

This quartet plays some of the most swinging music you will hear today. Straight ahead jazz firmly in the harmonic and melodic tradition, played by the finest UK-based jazz musicians at the peak of their distinguished careers. They will be playing a mixture of new originals and standards from the latest recording, “It’s Always 9.30 in Zog”

 Appearing with Dave, are Geoff Gascoyne on bass: one of the UK's most in demand bass player/composer/arranger/producer/ educators. In a 25 year career he has performed and recorded with Michel Legrand, Georgie Fame, Sting, Van Morrison, Bill Bruford, Peter King, Benny Golson and Jamie Cullum, with whom he was bassist, MD and arranger for 7 years.

Dutch drummer, Sebastiaan de Krom: studied at Berklee School of Music and lives between London & Belgium. He was with Jamie Cullum at the same time as Geoff and there they struck a terrific rapport. He tours with Ray Gelato and is one of the most in demand jazz drummers in Europe. Pianist Graham Harvey: studied music at Denver University, and is currently busy with Stacey Kent. He was MD of the funk group, Incognito, at the time they had their biggest hits (Positivity, Tribes Vibes and Scribes) and has also toured with George Benson.

The fantastic Fish Tales with the Alan Barnes Octet enters the last leg of its highly successful tour, co-written by Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy with poetry by Josie Moon. The music and poetry draws on the vibrant, dark and dangerous history of Grimsby's fishing trade and explores the myths, the misadventures and the realities of the fishing life. The dates are Lincoln Drill Hall on Saturday 11th November, Sunday lunchtime at The Old Courts in Wigan on 12th November.

The Phil Meadows Project continues the journey for his multi-award winning music. Combining jazz elements with ambient-electronica, classical and contemporary music Meadows has established himself as one of the most distinctive, creative and talented young musicians in the UK. This original music showcases an important wave of British talent performing extensively across UK and venturing into mainland Europe.

With two studio albums behind him plans are afoot to record his third album in 2017. Exploring new musical relationships and fresh influences soaring melodies combine with head-nodding grooves, atmospheric soundscapes and intricate interplay as he tips influence towards Go-Go Penguin, Portico Quartet, Bill Laurance, Donny McCaslin and Tigran. At just 27 years of age Meadows is sharing stages with international piano trio Phronesis, electronic music legend Matthew Herbert, NYC's leading lady of jazz trumpet Ingrid Jensen and former Amy Winehouse MD Femi Temowo.

Performance highlights for Meadows include sold-out shows at Ronnie Scott's, commissions to work with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at Sage Gateshead and performances across Belgium and Holland.

Champian Fulton Trio at Cinnamon Club

Top, top pianist and vocalist Champian Fulton was born in Oklahoma, Champian Fulton is an internationally acclaimed jazz jazz artiste, recognised by her peers and critics as distinctive and sophisticated. Her performances are invariably swinging and engaging, captivating audiences both in New York jazz clubs and at festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls the world over.

Now a leading light on the vibrant New York Jazz scene, she has performed with many of the jazz greats, including Lou Donaldson, Frank Wess, Eric Alexander, Buster Williams, and Louis Hayes.
Although still in her twenties she has recorded six albums as a leader and enjoys a busy international touring schedule.

Her most recent release, After Dark, is a tribute to Dinah Washington, who influenced Champian’s vocal style more than any other singer.

Brian Bicat, JATPjazz founder - RIP

Dear friends of JATPjazz in Bradford, with much sadness and regret I must inform you of the demise or our beloved founder, Brian Bicat who passed away suddenly on 22 September.

Announcement has been delayed in deference to Brian's wife Kathleen's wishes and to allow Brian's family to assemble from abroad to deal with matters. Kathleen requests expressions of condolence and sympathies be confined to card or letter presently whilst she struggles to come to terms with this sudden loss.

In keeping with Brian's strong "show must go on" principle, Kathleen plans to return to JATPjazz for the 03 November gig, having found some solace in attending to JATPjazz matters since Brian's passing. Kathleen requests therefore that her return be as normal, quiet and low-key as is possible and asks that no fuss be made on that occasion.

We plan at some point hence to hold a Bicat-Special in Brian's honour. Much detail is obviously to be added, however we broadly intend that this be a gig with Brian's favourite musicians, entry to which will be free, however there will be a "pay what you feel" arrangement, all proceeds of which will be donated to a charity of Kathleen's choice.

Tom Langham’s Hot Fingers Combo at Dove Jazz

On Saturday the 25 November at 8-00pm Dove Jazz Club welcomes back one of its most exalted sons with his long standing close chums from the cloisters of the Cotswolds for what is pleasingly for us becoming their annual pre-Christmas visit to the ‘Centre of the Universe.’ Earlier on this year we decided that the much valued supporters of Dove Jazz Club would greatly benefit from two visits from Tom Langham’s Hot Fingers Combo in 2018. Fortunately we were able to find a brace of suitably available windows in their programme and we didn’t hesitate to get their names in the book as they say. A decision that we are fairly sure will meet with the members magnanimous approval.

Any combination of musicians that is put together by what we still consider to be a youngish Mr Langham is automatically guaranteed to carry a fearsome reputation for musical excellence. In the jazz world the name Langham or even Spats is synonymous with first class musical entertainment by able purveyors of tunes with great melodies and in the main, meaningful words linked by knowledgeable and entertaining cabaret. The whole spectacle of a Hot Fingers performance is delivered with ad hoc humour in between carefully chosen numbers that in the main had their debut in the musical spectrum of the 1920’s and 30’s.

Whilst the interestingly colourful tapestry of Mr Langham’s life from relative obscurity to the odd mention in ‘The Times’ is reasonably well documented. Whilst those of his gifted chums who form the rest of the Hot Fingers are somewhat more obscure. Nowadays very few performances of the combo are given without the presence of the melodic charms of the bands outstandingly delightful nightingale Miss Emily Campbell. Danny Blythe has expanded his musical abilities to readily take in the playing of the mandolin, harmonica and various clarinets including the bass version as well as the guitar. One of these days space will permit me to give details of Tom’s bass player, Malcolm Sked’s adventures on the road with the famed Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band, accompanied by his sousaphone wearing one of his other jazz hats.

Scarborough Jazz festival -UK 2017 jazz venue of the year!

So the north has done it again - the second year running a NorvolJazz network promoter has won the  jazz venue of the year in the prestigious Parliamentary Jazz awards. And our warmest congratulations to Mike and Marion Gordon who have been making it happen for the last 15 years
‘Our very own North Sea Jazz Festival’ Jazzwise.

"Mike Gordon is the Director of Scarborough Jazz Festival.  Before retirement he was Head of North Yorkshire’s Special Education Support Services and then Executive Secretary of the National Association for Special Educational Needs.  He has also been promoter of Scarborough Jazz club on 50 nights a year for 34 years and is the original resident pianist. He describes himself as a jazz player of modest attainments – but getting better!

2017 is Scarborough Jazz Festival’s fifteenth year.  Audience numbers have grown over the years and analysis of the detailed evaluation returns – which the organisers take very seriously as a guide to improving all aspects of the event –have consistently indicated that 98% of the audience rated the quality and variety of the acts and artists as excellent or good.

The festival aims to have well-established performers, chosen because their jazz is continually developing, alongside younger bands with a diversity of musical agendas.  Regular attenders know they can expect a mixture of the accessible and the challenging. The weekend event is held in the wonderful Victorian Spa Grand Hall which looks out over the beach and sea towards Scarborough Castle."

Although it may come as a surprise to many, Hull has a vibrant jazz scene that dates back to the 1960’s. On an average week, there are at least 4 opportunities to hear live jazz in the city. Local musicians and enthusiasts have been integral in creating some of the longest running jazz clubs in the north.

Hull Jazz Club can be traced as far back as the 1960’s when it was run by the local legend John ‘Blind Lemon’ Holborn. Still performing, Blind Lemon is one of those characters that make local music scenes great. Always immaculately dressed and full of wit, Lemon regularly appears at jam sessions in the city to play his signature blues Frankie & Johnny. Hull Jazz in its current form was launched in 1983 by bassist and banjo player Ken Ford who sadly passed away last year. A grassroots promoter in its purest form, Ford brought some of the biggest names in British jazz to the club as well as running regular players nights. Since his passing, the club is being kept alive by a small group of hard working volunteers. Running on a Wednesday at The Goodfellowship Inn on Cottingham Road, upcoming highlights include the Hull Big Band on October 18th & Route De Django on November 29th.

Another long running jazz session happens at Pave Bar which is located in the fashionable Avenues area of the city. The jam session, which has taken place every Tuesday for a decade sees guest musicians join the Rob Law Trio. The front liners include vocalists Jenny Smith & Kate Peters as well as horn players Ben Lowman, Rod Mason & Stuart Garside. Due to the bar’s location and the lack of admission fee, the jam has a varied and vibrant audience that is made up of jazz fans, drinkers and students. Pave also runs a Sunday afternoon session with smaller ensembles for diners to enjoy. Georgina Barr, Dan Edwards and Martin Jones are amongst the regular rotation of performers.

The most recent gig to emerge in Hull’s jazz scene takes place at 4.30pm every Sunday at the Humber Street Gallery. Humber Street is an artery of the old town that has seen a great deal of regeneration in recent years. When the sun is shining, the street has a bustling atmosphere with a heady mix of shoppers and culture vultures. The gallery jazz session takes place in the cafe and features duos. Organised by bassist George Beastall, he is regularly accompanying musicians such as Nicki Allan & Thom Whitworth.

One of the biggest events in the Yorkshire jazz calendar is the Hull Jazz Festival. In recent years the festival has been split into 2 parts with a Summer and Winter edition. This year, they are celebrating their 25th anniversary in style. Jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny will be leading a quartet on Sat 11 November to open the festival which will also features performances by GoGo Penguin, Arun Gosh and Andy Sheppard.

One of Hull’s most famous jazz connections comes not in the form of a musician but that of a writer. Philip Larkin was a librarian at The University of Hull, during which time he wrote many of his most well known works. As well as his poetic compositions, Larkin was also a keen jazz fan and the jazz critic for the Daily Telegraph. His outspoken jazz reviews were often full of controversy due to his his criticism of modern jazz. Larkin favoured early styles of jazz performance and this preference is apparent in his writings which have been compiled in a book, All What Jazz: A Record Diary 1961–1971.

For those looking to do further reading on the history of Hull’s jazz scene, a fascinating book was released in 1991 entitled Hull Jazz and Jazzmen. Compiled by Laurie Dex, the book features interviews with local musicians who have been part of the scene since its beginning. The book gives a powerful insight into the development of a local music scene from those who helped to create it.

We welcome a new Northern jazz festival to the fold this coming weekend -making nineteen jazz festivals - at least- now in the north of England! It will be held at the Maltings in Berwick on Tweed in Northumberland Fri-Sun 13-15 October 2017

Though better known as one of the UK’s leading and most decorated poets, Don Paterson has had a second career as guitarist, and moved to London in the mid-80s to join the free-improv scene, where he took lessons with the great guitar maverick Derek Bailey.  For twelve years he co-led the Celtic-jazz ensemble Lammas with saxophonist Tim Garland, playing classical and 12-string guitars and sharing stages and studios with jazz luminaries, trumpet master Kenny Wheeler, vibraphone virtuoso Joe Locke, pianist Jason Rebello and many others.

His  band, which has been described as “a Scottish-accented Pat Metheny Group” features regular collaborator Steve Hamilton (formerly of Bill Bruford’s Earthworks and currently touring with drumming legend Billy Cobham) on keyboards, along with the the current Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year, David Bowden.

A truly inspiring Jazz Pianist takes you on a breathtaking  journey through the entire history of Jazz piano. At 2pm on Saturday 14th October in the afternoon Geoff Eales will take you on a trip covering the sedate ragtime of Scott Joplin and on to Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, before a fabulous finish with his own spontaneous improvisations.  “Eales has never disguised his respectful devotion to masters such as Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock and his glossy technique as a straight swinger is formidable” - The Guardian

Saturday evening has Derbyshire bassist, guitarist and jazz educator Fred Theolonious Baker with "American Dreams: The Music of Pat Metheny" The smoothest of tributes to the original Pat Metheny Group. Fred Thelonius Baker will be focussing on their early years including "American Garage" and "Offramp", playing a classic Gibson 175, an acoustic guitar and guitar synth to produce the typical sounds of the period. Fred is also conducting a masterclass in jazz guitar earlier in the day at 11.30am

Sunday afternoon 15th October features a New Orleans Jazz Brunch with fresh cooked Creole food – think gumbo, jambalaya and corn bread – combines with a musical melting pot of Jazz and Blues sounds to provide a very special, very mellow, very exclusive Sunday treat in the intimate and informal setting of The Maltings bar.

7th – Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell – the group most requested by our audience. The sound is described as “vintage acoustic swing music” – the red hot jazz of the 1920’s New York. This is a truly class act led by one of our favourite musicians “Spats” Langham on guitar and banjo and the evening will be much enhanced by the vocal talents of Emily Campbell who draws her inspiration from Ella and Peggy Lee. £10.

14th – Savannah Jazz Band – and making its final appearance for the year, Yorkshire’s number one and well travelled traditional jazz band. Always a first class jolly evening with some rhythm and blues thrown in for good measure.

21st – Temperance Seven – yes - it’s the real thing! Founded in the 1950s, the band specialises in the music of the 20s and 30s though with a tongue in cheek slant throughout. Even the name reflects this being “one under the eight” – there are eight musicians. You’ll recall the famous chart hits of the 60s such as “You’re driving me crazy” and “Pasadena”. Do come along for an evening of pure nostalgia – better still make up a party of friends and dress up in your retro outfits. £10

28th – Kevin Grenfall’s Jazz Giants + John Hallam – led by the irrepressible Kevin on trumpet on this occasion with our star reeds player John Hallam and the mellifluous Richard Leach on trombone. The rhythm section includes Phil Knight from Denmark on piano and Jack Coterill on drums. A lively evening is assured. £10.

November dates 

4th – Red Stripe Band – now for something a little different and much requested. Red Stripe led by Neil Drinkwater on keyboard has been stomping its boogie woogie, jump jive, blues, swing and rock and roll rhythms worldwide for nigh on twenty years. Infectious energy coupled with lashings of high octane music. £10.

11th – Sorry – No Jazz

18th – Dave Donohoe Jazz Band – and a warm welcome to one of the unsung heroes of the British Jazz scene with a first class array of musical talent led by Dave on trombone and amongst whom is our local hero, Frank Brooker plus Teddy Fullick on trumpet. Something of a ‘New Orleans’ bent to the programme but always an excellent evening’s entertainment.

25th – Amy Roberts + Richard Exall + Tom Kincaid – now here we have the makings of a memorable night as Amy and Richard demonstrate their formidable talents as they take on the standards on a range of reeds instruments and more than ably supported by the wonderful Tom Kincaid Trio. £10.
