Highlights of 2021 - Newcastle Jazz Co-Op

The determination of Newcastle’s Jazz.Coop to keep live music going at its venue The Globe throughout the pandemic was rewarded in 2021 with two national awards – Co-op of the Year and All Party Parliamentary Jazz Award – and two further grants from the Culture Recovery Fund.

In 2021 arranged over 50 jazz gigs. Half of them were livestreamed from the empty Globe to an eager world of people longing for live jazz. We have continued to livestream since audiences have been allowed back because this enables more people to enjoy the music. Of the many excellent gigs in 2021 I going to highlight three, each definitive performances of a particular style of jazz.

In January Emma Fisk’s Hot Club du Nord gave a virtuoso celebration of Django Reinhardt’s birthday. We knew they are one of the best gypsy jazz bands in the UK, but the surprise was how naturally Emma Fisk took to the livestream format. With a tablet on her music stand she engaged with the online comments as though with an audience in the room.

In October a packed audience in The Globe (and online) was spellbound by ARQ – Alison Rayner Quintet. This was the finest original contemporary jazz performed by five musicians at the height of their powers – carefully crafted melodies delivered with joyous spontaneity.

Another sell-out concert was the Clark Tracey Quartet recreating the iconic Under Milk Wood suite written by his father Stan nearly 60 years ago. This was not a tribute band. The musicians and the narrator (Ben Tracey – Clark’s son) delivered a striking, fresh interpretation of a classic. Marvellous.

Jazz Co-op gets more Cultural Relief Funding

More than £100 million has been awarded to hundreds of cultural organisations across the country in the latest round of support from the Culture Recovery Fund, the Culture Secretary announced today (19 November 2021). The third round of funding will support organisations as they deal with ongoing reopening challenges, ensuring they can thrive in better times ahead.

The Globe in Newcastle upon Tyne, run by the Jazz Co-op, has been awarded a grant of £25,000 by Arts Council England. This funding will help The Globe to continue and expand its multi-genre range of live performances (including jazz, folk, rock, classical and spoken word) and its programme of music courses, workshops and jam sessions.

This is The Globe’s third successful application to the Culture Recovery Fund. Many fewer cultural organisations have received grants in the third round, which makes The Globe’s achievement remarkable. This year The Globe has also won two national awards for its outstanding efforts to deliver live music during the pandemic - (Co-op of the Year and Parliamentary Jazz Award).

Joan Parker, co-chair of the cooperative that owns and runs The Globe, said: “We are delighted and relieved to be awarded this further funding. Ever since the pandemic started, we have been determined to continue delivering the objectives of the co-op to support live music and learning in our community. We’ve achieved a lot with the help of grant funding and the hard work of volunteers and staff, but there is still a way to go before we return to sustainability. Audience numbers, especially for small venues such as The Globe, are low because many people remain understandably worried by the risk of infection.”

 

Chris Bye appointed new CEO for Jazz North.

Jazz North has announced the appointment of Chris Bye as new Chief Executive. Chris takes over  from Lesely Jackson who stepped down in September this year. Chris will lead its next phase of development, growing opportunities for artists, audiences, promoters and young people across the north. Chris Bye will join the organisation at a key moment as the sector navigates a new landscape for live music, whilst exploring the global opportunities of digital music and culture.

Chris said:
“Jazz North has been an integral part of the national jazz scene for years and has been instrumental in launching the careers of some of the north’s most exciting, vibrant artists. The team has also done an incredible job providing essential advice and support to promoters and artists throughout the pandemic. 
What we face now is a unique moment in time. Unique in terms of challenges but also unique in terms of the potential for the northern jazz ecology to really develop. Artists are crying out for opportunities, and it is my aim to diversify our approach and expand our partnerships. I’m enormously excited to be joining and looking forward to working with an amazing group of people.”

Chris Bye comes to Jazz North following a career spanning the commercial and subsidised music industries. This has included managing a diverse portfolio of music organisations at Arts Council England and establishing an international programme of talent development opportunities for Pirate Studios. More recently Chris has supported key music venues and partners to navigate the pandemic, working with clients including Parklife, Ministry of Sound, Music Venues Trust and Greater Manchester Combined Authority. He also sits on the boards of SeaChange and Africa Oye.
