Leeds College of Music have made a donation to Fusebox to recognise the work that Dave Hatfield did in Leeds for many years. Thank you to LCoM.

Taupe are, Adam Stapleford- drums, Mike Parr Burman- guitar and electronics, Jamie Stockbridge - saxophones, a Newcastle upon Tyne based trio, specialising in razor-sharp polyrhythmic play, exploratory improvisation and raw, high energy live performance.

The group’s sound is built of influences drawing from free jazz and math metal to hip hop grooves and post bop, with a healthy dollop of skronk, all navigated down a path that seeks to blur the line between carefully constructed rhythmic compositions and explosive group improvisation. Taupe thrive on the danger of this ambiguity, deconstructing their music in real time to weave fresh and dynamic paths through their material with each performance.

Taupe have been described as a ‘power- jazz commando team’ and also ‘a band’.
They self-released their first album in March 2014 and continue to work towards material for a follow-up release this year.

Aby Vulliamy and George Murray have stepped up to support Taupe. Aby and George are both very accomplished musicians, Aby on viola and George on trombone will make for an interesting mix.

Following in the footsteps of Roller Trio, fresh from the burgeoning Leeds music scene, with their own distinctive sound, Stretch Trio play accessible music showing a huge range of influences from jazz to ambient electronica. Winners of the prestigious Peter Whittingham Award, they’ve recently recorded their debut album ‘Antithesis’ as well as appearing at the Gateshead International Jazz festival. They come to us in advance of appearances at the Wigan and Manchester jazz festivals. Definitely a band who look set to be going places fast. Featuring Andy French (sax/EWI), Tom Higham (drums), Calvin Travers (guitar) plus an array of loops and delays contributing to a wide open soundscape.

A long overdue appearance at The Lescar for a giant of both the Northern and UK jazz scenes, and a musician described by Gilles Peterson as “one of the best musicians in the UK”. Saxophonist Nat Birchall has followed his own path playing captivating music that is both spiritual and soulful. His live album ‘Live In Larissa’ was an instant classic, and an end of year favourite for many people in the year it was recorded, 2013. He brings a wonderful band, comprising six of the North’s most exciting and creative musicians; Nat Birchall - Tenor/soprano sax, percussion, Adam Fairhall - Piano, Corey Mwamba - Vibraphone, percussion, Michael Bardon - Bass, Johnny Hunter - Drums, Christian Weaver - congas/bata drum/bells/percussion. They’ve just recorded another album; catch them live before it becomes one of this year’s classics!

The Jazz Co op have also announced details of their weekend jazz workshop 1-2 August at the Globe - an opportunity for anyone who plays a bit of jazz and wants to get better ... a whole weekend of listening and playing in the company of others who want to learn and improve jazz skills.

The weekend workshop has been developed following the success of the monthly Play Jazz! afternoon workshops held at Sage Gateshead. The weekend format will give participants the time and space to learn more and develop further. There’s also a great gig on the Saturday night and the opportunity to jam with professional musicians. The tutors are James Birkett and Judith Thompson, two superb musicians and highly respected jazz educators. The workshop is suitable for all instruments and a range of abilities. Vocalists are welcome. Minimum age 16. For much of the weekend the participants will be divided into two groups – beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced. You’ll be able to improvise and interact with other musicians in an informal supportive situation.

The weekend workshop costs £82. This includes all tuition and free admission to the Jazz.Coop gig on Saturday evening featuring the Williams – Tanton Quartet. There is an additional optional charge of £16 for the provision of two buffet lunches and tea/coffee breaks. Overnight accommodation is not included. New York Brass Band trolled at Glasto

The fantastic New York Band played 16 gigs in 4 days at this year's Glastonbury Festival. Here's a review of them from the Somerset Gazette

"If you haven't heard "Happy" being played by a bunch of tartan wearing, brass blowing people from Yorkshire, you haven't heard it at all. Despite losing one of their number to 'a bender at the hell stage' (don't worry, he turned up later dressed as a banana in the crowd), the band - who have played an eye watering 16 gigs across the festival this weekend - were in great form"

Henry Grimes playes the Tusk Festival in Newcastle

This year is the great bassist Henry Grimes's 80th year on the planet, and he will be touring in western Europe in September and October, playing upright bass and violin and speaking some of his poetry, with his Magic Science Quartet, comprising the great alto saxophonist, flutist, EVI and Casio VL-Tone player Marshall Allen, long-time leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra; the Swiss pianist and shaman drummer intriguingly known as Ka; and Avreeayl Ra, drummer / bamboo flutist / percussionist from the AACM / Chicago.  http://henrygrimes.com

Monthly Vintage Jazz at the Co op

The ever innovative Jazz Co op in Newcastle now have the last Sunday of the month as Vintage Jazz night at the Globe.

This Sunday, 28 June, they welcome back the Vieux Carré Jazzmen, one of the finest Trad Jazz bands in the North and certainly the longest lasting – the band is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The sextet plays popular songs, rags, blues and marches from the 1920s and 1930s.

Vintage Jazz bands lined up over the coming months include the Mississippi Dreamboats, House of the Black Gardenias and the Levee Ramblers.

Doors open at 7pm and it’s £5 admission.

J-Night presents saxophonist Snake Davis

Saxophone maestro comes to Hull Truck Theatre with 25 classic tracks

Joined by Cutting Crew’s Gareth Moulton on vocals, legendary UK saxophonist Snake Davis and his band perform over 20 classics including Baker Street, Careless Whisper, Still Crazy After All These Years, Respect, Yakety Yak, his own solos from Million Love Songs, Moving on Up, Search for the Hero, and Lisa Stansfield's Change. Saxophone, in the right hands, is emotional and passionate; it can sing, scream, whisper.

Throughout the show Snake reveals some of the background and history to these classic tracks, as well as playing them in context. What is their individual magic ingredient? What makes them classic? How did they come about? How did the players produce that magic?

Snake Davis is one of the best session saxophone players in the music world, having worked with artists such as Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Cher, Beyoncé and even Motörhead. He has fronted bands including York’s Zoot and the Roots,  Snake Davis and the Charmers, and has toured with groups including The Blue Shoes ‘the world’s smallest band’.

Ravi Coltrane at the Sage

GRAMMY nominated saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary John Coltrane, is in concert at the Gage in Gateshead in July.

He has matured into an artist at the height of a career built on his talent, not his name. This time his band features long-time cohorts Adam Rogers on guitar, Scott Colley on bass and Nate Smith on drums. He guides this new Quartet with his signature seriousness of purpose, fire, and profundity, led by his distinctive sound on his saxophone.

Lesley Jackson to join Jazz North as Executive Director in September 2015

Jazz North is delighted to announce the appointment of Lesley Jackson as Executive Director from September 2015. This is a new position for Jazz North, the Northern jazz development agency established in 2012, as it changes from being a project funded organisation to become an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO).

As Executive Director, Lesley will provide strategic leadership and ensure delivery of Jazz North’s 5 year Business Plan. The Executive Director will take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of Jazz North’s fundraising, business development, finances, communications, HR, organisational management and legal compliance.

Lesley will be joining Jazz North from her current position as Executive Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in Leeds where she played a key role in establishing the organisation as one of the leading contemporary dance companies in the UK today and overseeing its part in the capital development of the new home it shares with Northern Ballet.

Lesley says: “It has been a privilege to be a part of Phoenix Dance Theatre for the last six years. Dance and music are so closely related and I am delighted to be joining Jazz North at such a defining moment. I am looking forward to working with Nigel Slee, Steve Mead and the rest of the team to help Jazz North achieve its full potential."

Aaron Parks trio autumn date in Leeds

Aaron Parks is a leading musician in the new generation of jazz pianists and composers to come out of New York: a master of melody, and a composer and arranger of protean skill and dexterity. As an ECM artist, he is joined on this first UK tour by two other formidable players from that label, bassist Ben Street and masterful drummer Billy Hart whose rich history stretches back to Miles Davis and includes stints with Wes Montgomery, and, Herbie Hancock.

Aged 18, Aaron was asked by Terrence Blanchard to join his band and subsequently recorded on four albums with the veteran trumpeter and contributed to several Spike Lee soundtracks, including the Grammy winning A Tale of Gods Will (A Requiem for Katrina) for the documentary When the Levees Broke.

Aaron's 2008 album Invisible Cinema was lauded by BBC Online as one of the great albums of the year. More recently, Arborescence, his luminously atmospheric solo debut album for ECM has received glowing reviews and confirmed him as a leading pianist of his generation.

Peter is a national treasure - one of the greatest alto sax players in the world and one the greatest musicians to have emerged from the UK. He has often been compared to Charlie Parker but is very much his own man - often imitated but never duplicated. Clare in North Yorkshire

As much as she thoroughly enjoys fronting her Big Band or her Hollywood Orchestra, or presenting her weekly show on BBC Radio 2, award winning jazz singer and Yorkshire lass Clare Teal still revels in performing in more intimate venues. Getting close to an audience is a thrilling experience for Clare. She engages in a wonderful musical (and often spoken) conversation with the audience and they in turn feel that they really have witnessed something personal and very special.

The music played in these shows is always evolving, from The Great American and British Songbooks to the music made popular by her heroes, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day and Peggy Lee to more contemporary covers and original material Clare loves to create a melting pot of styles and genres, but all sung in her inimitable style. Beautiful melodies, fabulous arrangements and all interspersed with Clare’s warm and witty story telling.

With national award wining artists such as Jo Harman, Val Wiseman, including Alan Barnes and Digby Fairweather and Nicola Farnon performing on the outdoor stages, acts that will perform over the weekend indoors inside the Great Hall have just been announced as follows:

Saturday 11:00am – 5:00pm
Jenny Bray and her Jazz students - Jenny Bray brings her students to the Hall for a show of talent from the stars of tomorrow. Jenny will also be supported by jazz educator Rev Ray.
Saffron Byass - With a stunning voice and a talent for the guitar and piano, Burton Agnes Festival look forward to hearing performances from Saffron's new album in the making.
Samuel McKie in association with the Beverley Festival - Samuel enjoys modern folk, and listens to artists such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and newer artists such as Johnny Flynn and Emily Barker.

Sunday 12 noon – 5:00pm
Gershwin revisited - A tour of Gershwin's greatest songs with festival organiser Simon on sax, Michael Nagasaka and Tom Mellor on guitar, all capped off with Kate Sweeting's beautiful singing.
Ben Beattie - Sax playing Ben will perform solo some of his favourite pieces and own compositions, and will also be showing off his talent and skills on the piano.
Rob Law Trio - Rob is an accomplished piano player who has earned himself a reputation as one of the country's most exciting young artists
Edwina Hayes  Her solo shows are a pleasing blend of well crafted songs, beautifully sung and played, coupled with a natural charm that audiences everywhere find appealing.

This years Courtyard Sessions, which will run during the afternoon on both days, will see performances from local artists Alfie Woods & Meg Waite along with festival regular, and hugely talented, Jacob King.

Just a brief note to remind you of three important things...

1. Workshops WILL continue on Monday (15th) with Ben Lowman taking over from Matt Anderson. All welcome - new people come and try us out! £8 per session
2. SAM WATTS is going to be amazing on Saturday - playing silent film music, talking about music and images... wonderful stuff! 7.30 p.m. £8 (£6)
3. There are a few places at Summer School, but it's filling up fast so let me know if you are interested. It's August 3rd - 6th and the cost is £200.

Oh yes - and there's a wonderful gig next week (not a jazz-at-heart promotion, but I will be playing!). Leeds Jazz Orchestra is on at HEART on 20th June at 8 p.m.

All is not well in centre of Leeds...

"All is not well in the centre of Leeds for mid week jazz.

Unfortunately there will be no more Thursday Jazz at the Central on Wellington Street. The landlord has apparently been evicted by the pub for a variety of reasons according top staff and the brewery are now looking for a new manager to take over. In the meantime, the windows to the pub have been temporarily boarded up to protect them, possibly from the ousted landlord! Promoter Richard Hardy is in discussions for a potential switch of venue on a Thursday night - I will keep you updates through the blog.

Meanwhile round the corner at the White Rabbit in York Place, the final arrival of summer will mean an enforced break there on Tuesday nights also - on 16th June they have guitarist Sam Dunn with his trio 23 June saxman Nadim Teimoori  then the last gig will be on Tuesday 30 June with bassist Simon Read's trio - hopefully the venue will be back live again in the Autumn.

The Sela Bar also seems a bit quiet too now that Matt Anderson is heading south for the smoke (though I hear bassist Tom Riviere is to restart programming the monthly Sunday evening gig there in the autumn). But at least there is definitely Brendan Duffy's new gig at the Head of Steam near Leeds station Sundays 7.30 til 10-00

Ornette Coleman dies at 85

Ornette Coleman, the alto saxophonist and one of the most innovative composers and performers in jazz history, died on Thursday morning (11-6-15) in Manhattan at age 85.

Coleman's influence on jazz music has been massive. He stirred up the jazz scene starting in the late Fifties, setting aside traditional harmonic and rhythmic rules in favor of an avant-garde approach filled with unorthodox solos and musical structures. His debut studio album, Something Else!!!! in 1958, and "The Shape of Jazz to Come" were breakthroughs in the development of free and avant-garde jazz.

One of only few Northern appearances was with Prime Time – this was his heavy rock phase with two drummers, electric basses and guitars, seen here at the Sheffield Jazz Festival, Crucible Theatre in Sheffield 3 June 1981 (on the same bill was the Abdullah Ibrahim Quartet - tickets cost £3.50!)

The sheer volume of the music virtually lifted you out of your seat and quite a few in the audience walked out after about five minutes but for me it was an evening of thrilling, driving music.
