Grimsby Jazz welcomes Roger Beaujolais back to play with the Pat McCarthy Band on Wednesday 12th April 2017 at the Old Clee Club, Clee Crescent, Grimsby, DN32 8LS.

Vibraphone player Roger Beaujolais has a brilliant technique, which is easily overlooked as it always serves his endless musical ideas - always surprising, always melodic and above all, always swinging.

"A Fish Tale" going swimmingly...

A Fish Tale, a commission from Gill Wilde of Grimsby Jazz, is an amazing new work co-written by Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy with poetry by Josie Moon. It tours the UK for the first time from July 2017 with support from Arts Council England, The music and poetry draws on the vibrant, dark and dangerous history of Grimsby's fishing trade, the commission explores the myths, the misadventures and the realities of the trawling life.

It is a tribute to the contribution made by those in the fishing industry who were instrumental in feeding the nation and protecting it in times of war.

It is a powerful and exciting evening of jazz and poetry completely evocative of any fishing port, and guaranteed to stir the memories of fishing communities

Marc Cary at Hebden Bridge Piano Festival

One of the leading lights of contemporary jazz, New York pianist, keyboardist and composer Marc Cary is the master of a futuristic jazz-funk that ranks him among the most innovative and creative figures on the jazz scene. He holds tight to his roots in Washington DC’s go-go music scene, but Cary’s interests also include everything from Indian classical to Malian music to hip-hop. He started his career working with Betty Carter, a legendary vocalist, famous for drawing soul and sincerity out of her bands, and went on to work with Roy Hargrove, Dizzy Gillespie, Erykah Badu, Wynton Marsalis, Carmen McRae, Lauryn Hill, Q-Tip and most influentially star vocalist Abbey Lincoln whom he accompanied for over a decade.

Prehistoric Jazz found in Clitheroe

The Prehistoric Jazz Quintet is a group of well-established young jazz musicians, led by composer and pianist Misha Gray, whose original compositions explore these origins of music. Their style relies heavily on the musicians’ spontaneity and improvising skills, and the result is a lively combination of intense, intriguing and unique textures. Expect tracks from their new album, “Origin of the Species”.

Lena Horne celebrated at GIJF

Sage Gateshead celebrates the songs of Lena Horne in her centenary year with BBC Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal, accompanied by her 17 piece Hollywood Orchestra conducted by world class trumpeter/composer Guy Barker. Opening this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival (Friday 31 March), ‘The First Ladies of Swing’ celebrates timeless classics from the great American and British songbooks made famous by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee and Lena Horne.

Lena Horne was one of the great African-American figures in 20th century entertainment. She was a dancer, movie star, civil rights activist and singer.  She was also a great friend of Billy Strayhorn, who famously worked with Duke Ellington.

Guy Barker said: “Ella Fitzgerald’s legendary status means that her centenary is such an important milestone that as a result it is very easy to pass by other important artists also born in 1917, of which Lena Horne is one.”

At the heart of this programme are three specially commissioned pieces. Guy Barker has been asked to re-imagine three classics associated with Lena Horne to be performed for the first time at Gateshead International Jazz Festival.  The chosen songs are Stormy Weather, which was Lena Horne’s signature tune, Something to Live For, written by Billy Strayhorn and which Lena often performed, and the ever popular Singin’ in the Rain, which Clare Teal will interpret in her own unique style.

Gatehead international Jazz Festival welcome Instant Composers

The Sage Gateshead welcomes Amsterdam’s ten-strong Instant Composers Pool Orchestra as artists in residence at Gateshead International Jazz Festival, which takes place Friday 31 March – Sunday 2 April. Celebrating their 50th anniversary the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra (ICP) will be in residence all weekend with performances, a family show, improvisation masterclass, as well as a film screening and exhibition. Although some individual members such as Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg and Ab Baars have performed before in the North East, this is the first ever visit of this hugely significant group in European Jazz to this region,.

The Instant Composers Pool is a unique and internationally renowned collective of Dutch composer-improviser-instrumentalists formed in 1967 by Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. Playing ragtime to swing, bop to free jazz, classical to carnival, the group continue to be at the forefront of the creative music scene they helped create over four decades ago.

Sadly co-founder Misha Mengelberg, who appeared along with Han Bennink at the 2006 Gateshead International Jazz Festival, passed away earlier this month and the weekend will mark a celebration of his life and contribution to music. Misha and So On is a documentary which follows Misha Mengelberg during his final international tour with the ICP and will be screened on Saturday afternoon (3.30pm). A selection of images by international and Dutch photographers that document the long career of Misha Mengelberg will also be on display in the building throughout the weekend.

Wildflower at Heart

Wild Flower is an all-star band led by saxophonist Matt Anderson playing original music inspired by the sound and approach of jazz legend Wayne Shorter, alongside new arrangements of classic and lesser-known Shorter compositions. The band released their debut album featuring special guest trumpeter Laura Jurd in 2015 on the Jellymould Jazz label to widespread critical acclaim and airplay on BBC Radio 3 alongside a 13-date national tour and launch gig at Pizza Express Dean Street, with Selwyn Harris of Jazzwise writing "Their own unique stamp on Shorter's very personal repertoire... of a quality that resonates with its inspirational source... Enjoyably un-pretentious."

Originally hailing from the North Yorkshire Moors and now living in London, saxophonist and composer Matt Anderson is the winner of the Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition 2017. He is popular as a sideman in a variety of projects on the fertile London and Leeds jazz scenes such as the bands of Jamie Taylor (also appearing as a featured soloist on his latest album) and Mark Donlon, performing regularly across the UK and internationally with recent appearances in New Zealand and Scandinavia.

Wild Flower draws on an all-star line-up of UK jazz musicians. Guitarist Alex Munk just released his debut album with Flying Machines to glowing reviews in the press. Pianist Jamil Sheriff is the Jazz Pathway Leader at Leeds College of Music and is well known for his own projects such as his Octet, Big Band and Trio. Finally, drummer Sam Gardner and bassist Sam Vicary have built up a rapport playing together in a variety of settings, from appearing with jazz artists such as Jiannis Pavlidis, Tim Whitehead and Krzysztof Urbanski.

Needing no introduction, Wayne Shorter is a legendary figure across the whole spectrum of jazz, from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and his own seminal albums on Blue Note Records through the Miles Davis Second Great Quintet and Weather Report to his new Quartet.

We are organising a Jazz evening at East Durham College in Peterlee with a band called 'Emma Fisk's Hot Club Du Nord' on 27th April 2017 at 7pm.

Emma Fisk's Hot Club du Nord bring to life the classic 1930s and 40s repertoire of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club de France. Featuring Emma Fisk on violin, James Birkett and David Harris on guitars and Bruce Rollo on double bass, the band encompasses a wealth of experience, knowledge and love of the hot club/ gypsy jazz style. At a Hot Club du Nord performance you can expect to hear a selection of the popular songs, jazz standards and Reinhardt/ Grappelli originals as performed by the Hot Club de France during the 1930s and 40s.

You will hear fresh, inspired interpretations of the material as well as recreations of some of the delightful arrangements from the original recordings. A treat for connoisseurs of swinging string jazz and lovers of all things vintage.

Julian Siegel's new, all-star jazz orchestra tour

Julian Siegel's new, all-star jazz orchestra will be playing as part of a six date tour of the East Midlands this week. Congratulations to Derby Jazz and the EMJAZZ network of promoters for fixing up this.

The music the Orchestra will be playing will feature Julian's new music for Jazz Orchestra, from re-imaginings and expansions of his music for small bands to a new piece commissioned by Derby Jazz specially for this tour. 'TALES FROM THE JACQUARD' draws inspiration from the lacemaking process and the Jacquard cards, which controlled the lace knitting machines. Julian's parents and family ran a lace manufacturing business in Nottingham's lace market for 50 years.

This band will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 fora future JAZZ NOW.

The Anglo Saxons called it 'Hylad Monath' aka The Stormy Month... hence the phrase: 'March winds doth blow and we shall have snow'. No snow down at Frederiks ParrJazz H.Q. but lots of blowing-  all of the jazz variety. Yep we've got an action packed month and no mistake. Four Tuesdays back to back with very special guests, featuring 1 trio, 1 quartet, a solo saxophone maestro & a virtuoso guitarist. Plus a milestone to celebrate! On 14th March we will have been in our present home for 3 years; the date marks our 3rd ParrJazz@Frederiks Birthday. Soon after in early April it's an even bigger one-  the 8th Birthday of ParrJazz! Yes we'll be celebrating 8 years of our fantastic weekly jazz club has been in existence- pop the date in your diaries as it'll be party time on the 11th April and no mistake. Look out for all the details in the next edition of 'The Bugle'.

But back to 'Stormy March'. First off on the 7th March we're delighted to welcome a new band to the club (well a band new to us at least) although one of their members is a regular guest of ours so we know it will be real quality music. Plus it promises to be wacky, quirky and fun too as it's- "The Flat Cap 3" with Ed Kainyek Jazz to put a smile on your face :) .

They're followed in by another combo on 14th March . A quartet comprising two old faces and two new ones: The Ben Crosland Quartet. Four top drawer players bringing their 'A' game- the finest jazz from 'Right Now to Way Back When'

The 21st March heralds the arrival of our first solo guest of the month, the wonderful saxophonist, clarinettist and flautist Mr. John Hallam. Gorgeous jazz to wallow in.

And don't fret there's one more jazz night left before the month ends. ('Fret' being the operative word as frets are the workplace of our final guest). On 28 March we are honoured to welcome Mr. John Wheatcroft. Variously described as- "The complete guitarist and /or the guitarists' guitarist" he is without doubt one the most accomplished players in the UK. Should be fun listening to him duetting or should it be duelling with our own 'in house'  'wunderkind' Tony .

Jazz Co-op wants your help!

In 2014 something extraordinary happened in North East England. Some 200 people who love jazz and other music bought The Globe, an old pub in Newcastle, to create the UK’s first bar/venue run by a cooperative committed to live music.

Three years on, The Globe hosts a wide range of music and dance five nights a week - jazz, blues, rock, reggae, punk, funk, folk, country and more. There’s also a regular programme of courses, workshops and jam sessions. The Globe is a place where musicians can learn, develop and share their skills.

We’ve achieved a lot so far and now we’re asking for more investment so we can build on our success.

As often happens with old buildings, the refurbishment cost more than we expected. Also we have twice had to deal with the practical and financial problems caused by our tenants leaving prematurely. As a result the cooperative decided to take control of the running of the whole building. We have employed a manager and bought more equipment. Our overheads have increased but in the long term the business will be more sustainable.

All this has been done without any grant aid or public funding but we have had to borrow. When we reach our target of £36,000 of new investment we will be able to pay back one of the lenders and reduce our expenditure by £1,000 a month. This will make a big difference to The Globe and to the live music scene in Tyneside.

As an investor you will be a member of the cooperative and you can, if you wish, shape the way the business develops. A Mississippi native, Lisa is one of the greatest singers you'll ever hear, and she's no mean guitar slinger either! With blues, country, gospel and soul influences (and adding the occasional dollop of jazz inflection) Mills takes the best of each genre in self-penned pieces and carefully chosen covers, and transforms them utterly. She is on of those rare artists that, once you've heard her, cannot possibly be mistaken for anyone else.

Hull Jazz Festival celebrates the City of Culture

2017’s a big year for Hull. Hull Jazz Festival are taking part in the year-long celebrations for Hull UK City of Culture 2017 with a special Summer Edition of Hull Jazz Festival running from 11 – 15 July at venues across the city.

The festival opens on Tuesday 11th July with Snake Davis and his Classic Sax Solos show. A big favourite with Hull audiences, Snake brings his band to Hull Truck to perform some of the best-loved sax solos from the last 50 years.

Wednesday 12th July sees a long overdue reunion show by one of Hull’s most popular jazz bands. 25 years after their meteoric reign as the North’s top swing outfit, Ain’t Misbehavin’ take us on a joyful romp through 1930s dance sounds, inspired by the Hot Club de France.  Across town at Fruït on the 12th we've got a double bill of local Hull talent with festival favourites Bud Sugar and Chiedu Oraka.

On Thursday 13th July, Hull Truck hosts a show with New York sax titan Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the band behind the music on David Bowie's final album, Blackstar. Blending influences from jazz, electronica and the rock music he listened to growing up, McCaslin's the new face of jazz fusion.

Fans of Jazz Manouche are in for a treat on Friday 14th July as we welcome Sébastien Giniaux Trio (France) and The Grimaldi Quartet (UK), two young ensembles at the forefront of the modern gypsy jazz scene.

Also on Friday 14th, across town at Kardomah94 and in assocation with Hulljazz, we have a special performance of trombonist Paul Taylor's Jazz in Hull: People and Places suite in memory of Hull Jazz organiser Ken Ford who died earlier this year.

On Saturday 15th July we present two of the UK’s most exciting new jazz acts alongside a special performance by two giants of the UK jazz and soul scenes. With influences from jazz, hip-hop, Afrobeat and South African Township, all-female septet Nérija are blazing a trail for women in jazz. And fiery saxophone-drum duo Binker & Moses, winner of UK Jazz Act of the Year at the 2016 Jazz FM Awards, have already developed a fiercely loyal following for their hypnotic live shows.

On Saturday evening, we’re delighted to welcome back Courtney Pine CBE with Black Notes From the Deep, a brand new project that sees him collaborate with UK soul legend Omar. The two friends will be performing original material together for the first time alongside Courtney’s band.

Guitar-led band playing classic jazz with a classy singer.  Thom Whitworth’s trumpet brings solos to weave into Pat’s guitar lines. Warren Jolly plays the bass to support them all.

10 March  Angus Bayley’s Scrapbook
 An unusual septet featuring strings and horns.

Their genre-bending repertoire lies between folk, jazz and rock played for the long run.

17 March  Talinka Quartet

The singer Tali joins her husband Gilad Atzmon and a Baroque instrumentalist Jenny Bliss Bennett to intermingle saxes, accordion, flute, violin and viola da gamba.  Yaron Stavi (bass) and Enzo Zirilli (drums) hold it all together.

4 March Zoe Rahman solo

Outstanding pianist claims the club for herself with a hugely varied set reflecting her Bengali, Irish and English influences.  Her exposure with Courtney Pine has cemented her full-on jazz credentials.   Her wit and charm have won Wakefield hearts many times.

 
31 March  Pete Oxley / Nic Meier Quartet 

Two monster guitarists with ten guitars on a second massive tour of hugely well-received gigs.    Raph Mizraki (bass) and Paul Cavaciuti (drums) push some energy their way to drive the energy even higher.

That's the phrase The Duke is most famous for, and we'll be hearing a lot of swing and a lot of Duke Ellington famous tunes when Cleveland Watkiss, Tom Harrison, Robert Mitchell, Conor Chaplin and David Lyttle come to Seven Arts with "The Music of Duke Ellington" on Thursday 9 March.
