Jazz Co-op gets more Cultural Relief Funding

More than £100 million has been awarded to hundreds of cultural organisations across the country in the latest round of support from the Culture Recovery Fund, the Culture Secretary announced today (19 November 2021). The third round of funding will support organisations as they deal with ongoing reopening challenges, ensuring they can thrive in better times ahead.

The Globe in Newcastle upon Tyne, run by the Jazz Co-op, has been awarded a grant of £25,000 by Arts Council England. This funding will help The Globe to continue and expand its multi-genre range of live performances (including jazz, folk, rock, classical and spoken word) and its programme of music courses, workshops and jam sessions.

This is The Globe’s third successful application to the Culture Recovery Fund. Many fewer cultural organisations have received grants in the third round, which makes The Globe’s achievement remarkable. This year The Globe has also won two national awards for its outstanding efforts to deliver live music during the pandemic - (Co-op of the Year and Parliamentary Jazz Award).

Joan Parker, co-chair of the cooperative that owns and runs The Globe, said: “We are delighted and relieved to be awarded this further funding. Ever since the pandemic started, we have been determined to continue delivering the objectives of the co-op to support live music and learning in our community. We’ve achieved a lot with the help of grant funding and the hard work of volunteers and staff, but there is still a way to go before we return to sustainability. Audience numbers, especially for small venues such as The Globe, are low because many people remain understandably worried by the risk of infection.”

 

Chris Bye appointed new CEO for Jazz North.

Jazz North has announced the appointment of Chris Bye as new Chief Executive. Chris takes over  from Lesely Jackson who stepped down in September this year. Chris will lead its next phase of development, growing opportunities for artists, audiences, promoters and young people across the north. Chris Bye will join the organisation at a key moment as the sector navigates a new landscape for live music, whilst exploring the global opportunities of digital music and culture.

“Jazz North has been an integral part of the national jazz scene for years and has been instrumental in launching the careers of some of the north’s most exciting, vibrant artists. The team has also done an incredible job providing essential advice and support to promoters and artists throughout the pandemic. 
What we face now is a unique moment in time. Unique in terms of challenges but also unique in terms of the potential for the northern jazz ecology to really develop. Artists are crying out for opportunities, and it is my aim to diversify our approach and expand our partnerships. I’m enormously excited to be joining and looking forward to working with an amazing group of people.”

Chris Bye comes to Jazz North following a career spanning the commercial and subsidised music industries. This has included managing a diverse portfolio of music organisations at Arts Council England and establishing an international programme of talent development opportunities for Pirate Studios. More recently Chris has supported key music venues and partners to navigate the pandemic, working with clients including Parklife, Ministry of Sound, Music Venues Trust and Greater Manchester Combined Authority. He also sits on the boards of SeaChange and Africa Oye.

Huddersfield Jazz & the White Swan are proud to present The Andy Cholerton Trio.

 

As one of the most respected jazz pianists in the North of England, Andy enjoys a varied and full playing career. He has worked with some of the greats of the British jazz scene including Claire Martin, Alan Barnes, Roy Williams, Enrico Tomasso, Jim Mullen, Bruce Adams, Tina May and Mike Walker, to name but a few.Andy will be joined on the day by Adrian Knowles on bass and Paul Smith on drums

Nishla Smith is a rising star jazz singer based in Manchester. Her new album ‘Friends with Monsters’, is on Whirlwind records on Nov 5th 2021.Nishla is a City Music Foundation artist, and is currently part of Jazz North’s Northern Line artist roster. She appeared at Seven Arts along with Leeds saxophonist Emma Johnson in 2019. Her unique musical sensibility, along with this preoccupation with narrative is recurrent throughout a diverse array of musical projects.

Clark Tracey returns to Leeds with a new line-up of gifted young musicians who have impressed audiences at clubs and festivals with a maturity beyond their years. Aside from Clark, a six-time winner of Best Drums in the British Jazz Awards, Daniel Higham is lead trombone with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, James Owston was a finalist in the BBC young jazz musician of the year competition and Tom Ridout was another finalist in the same competition in 2016, pianist Will Barry, won the Musicians’ Company Jazz Young Musician award in 2017. From his own experience of over 40 years in jazz, Clark leads them through bebop to post-bop, a highly accessible journey that swings all the way. National Youth Jazz Orchestra director Mark Armstrong competes the band on trumpet.

Universal Time is a new collaboration between four musicians already well known to Northern audiences for their diverse work with groups such as Paradise Trio, Beats & Pieces, and Perpetual Motion Machine, amongst many others. Poignant melodic themes and colourful harmonies combine with elements of jazz-rock and free improvisation, in this compelling original music.

Adam Fairhall and Johnny Hunter, stalwarts of Manchester and Sheffield’s creative music scenes, have established a piano/drums duo to explore early jazz forms through an avant garde lens. The piano/drums format is perfectly suited to this, being a favoured format in both Harlem stride and free music.In this performance they explore the repertoire of Trinidadian born pianist Winifred Atwel a popular figure of 1950s music,  Atwell was enormously popular in Britain and Australia in the post-war era, selling over 20 million records, and yet she is barely a footnote in jazz histories and histories of popular music today.  The music mixes ragtime, stride and boogie with contemporary idioms. The music is exciting, accessible and adventurous, and audiences will love it, especially jazz fans who also remember Atwell!

JULIAN COSTELLO QUARTET - 19TH NOVEMBER Friday 26th we're back once more at The Kol Box. Julian Costello is a London-based musician, composer and teacher. Julian writes the music for various ensembles and tries to approach life with humour. This International quartet is energetic, melodic and performs with humour. It features renowned musicians Maciek Pysz on Guitar, Yuri Goloubev/Jakub Cywinski/Michele Tacchi on Bass and Adam Teixeira/Eric Ford on Drums/Percussion. They have played venues in London to sellout crowds, toured England thanks to fantastic support from The Arts Council of England, and also France, Poland, Germany and Belgium.

The Magic Lantern / Thursday 25th November / Yellow Arch Studios (£15) We’re so excited to welcome back The Magic Lantern aka Jamie Doe, with music blurring the boundaries between folk, jazz and contemporary music; unique, emotional, joyful, moving, and honest.
