Cast is Doncaster’s new performance venue.  Opened in 2013 it is a multi-space venue with four performance spaces, its most intimate space holds 80 people and its largest space 620.  Throughout the year it presents an eclectic programme of leading artists and companies from across the UK and further afield.  In its programming it aims to get more and more people involved in enjoying the arts and cultural experiences.

Nestled in the heart of Doncaster (on Waterdale), Cast is a place for performance, participation, conversation and debate.  In the last year alone its programme has hosted work of national significance and they are committed to developing a jazz programme that brings the best to the town and showcases artists in incredible settings.  From album launches and workshops to live performances; Cast has already played host to many jazz artists including Barb Jungr, Clare Teal, Jackie Dankworth, Dennis Rollins, Roger Beaujolais and more.

As this new venue continues to grow it aims to programme more in the way of Jazz performance and establish itself as a name on the circuit for the some of the best live gigs in the region.  Only a short distance from Sheffield, Leeds and York its certainly worth a visit.

Chris Barber appears on Sat 31 Jan with his ten-piece band, featuring a sevenstrong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music from his roots in New Orleans style to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet, before going back to "When the Saints".

End of Jazz UK...

As most jazz promoters will tell you, putting on the music successfully is not easy. Any publication that helps spread the word is to be supported and cherished. So an announcement today makes it feel a bit more chilly out there....

On 21st November Jazz Services announced they are to cease production of JazzUK immediately from the last November issue. Jazz UK will be sorely missed by jazz clubs and independent promoters. In it's heyday it was the bible of gigs taking place in the country - where everybody looked and knew they could find out easily what was going on. It hasn't been like that for the last couple of years and putting the "gigs" section online was in many people's eyes the beginning of the end for Jazz UK, as it has now proved with withdrawal of Arts Council Funding.

JazzUK’s editor John Norbury-Lyons said, “It’s a shame to have to close the magazine in its current form after so many issues, as it’s been a great way to communicate the amazing work done by so many of those involved in the UK’s jazz scene, as well as Jazz Services’ own activities.  But Jazz Services has to change, and now the organisation has to focus on making those changes to ensure it’s still in a position to support the jazz scene going forwards.  Prioritising time and resources is a necessary part of that process, and unfortunately this means JazzUK has had to close.

“I hope that in its own way the magazine has helped contribute to the success of the artists, promoters, broadcasters, writers and others featured in its pages, and I’d like to take this opportunity to give my sincere thanks to everyone who’s been involved in its production over the years.  In the meantime, the discussions with Jazzwise magazine are very encouraging and hopefully there will yet be a future for the JazzUK name as Jazz Services continues to evolve.”

"Over past few years JazzUK has enjoyed an extremely productive partnership with Jazzwise magazine to produce monthly live jazz listings, available on the Jazz Services website as the digital guide "Gigs" as well as in the print edition of Jazzwise and on Jazzwise Magazine’s website and app.  As part of the more collaborative model proposed for Jazz Services in the future, discussions are currently in place to expand and develop this partnership further, with more details to be announced as they are available".

Let's hope for the sake of Jazz Promotion everywhere that he's right...

One year on from its re-launch in December 2013 the refurbished Jazz Café on Newcastle’s Pink Lane continues to present regular live jazz on Fridays and Saturdays and most Tuesdays. More often than not the bands are drawn from among the cream of our own region’s talent.

The Friday evenings kick off a special week of performance with the region's favourite piano trio 

on Friday 5th December 8.00 pm  the Paul Edis Trio £5.00 entry.

During the three weeks straddling this anniversary of the venue the Café will be welcoming three bands from Leeds, Manchester and London and one and a solo pianist from mainland Europe.

Together the bands are proof positive that contemporary jazz is being created and played by musicians from the younger generation. Also that the name “Jazz” – as just demonstrated in these few bands - covers a rich variety of different musical styles.

Unfurl from Manchester ( 9.00pm Friday 21st November) are a four piece who combine Indian Ragas, contemporary jazz, flamenco and Arabic rhythms. Led by violinist Olivia Moore they have been enthusiastically received at numerous festivals, clubs and theatre venues across the country, as a result gaining Arts Council and Jazz North support. They are Olivia Moore violin/band leader; Jim Faulkner electric guitar; Gavin Barras double bass; Adam Warne Egyptian percussion

Travelers + Julie Sassoon (8.00pm Tuesday 25th November).

Travelers consists of four young musicians, two from Italy and two from France who came together in 2008 to explore the edge between contemporary jazz and rock/pop music. Their debut CD, released in 2013,

won awards in both Italy and France. Solo pianist Julie Sassoon is from Berlin

The Matt Anderson / Jiannis Pavlidis Duo (9.00pm Saturday 6th December) hails from Leeds where guitarist Jiannis teaches on the prestigious jazz course at Leeds College of Music. Matt, a hard – blowing tenor sax player, was previously seen at the Café last February when he donated his services to the all - day fund – raiser for Jazz North East.Matt and Jiannis share a love for the songs of Cole Porter, George Gershwin and other of the Great American Songbook composers, and for the jazz stylings of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. They have played together as a duo for two years. Their concert promises to be a night of close group interplay, excellent musicianship and solid jazz entertainment.

Preston – Glasgow – Lowe ( 8.00pm Friday 12th December) is London - based and probably consists of the youngest musicians of any of the three bands. In terms however of experience these three have been around the block, having worked as sidemen with major artists as varied as John Scofield, the Foreign Exchange, Melody Gardot, Robert Mitchell and Tommy Smith.They are, put simply, an electric guitar trio, often exciting and propulsive and with rock dynamics, but also full of shimmering textures, intricate harmony and strong melodic lines. They are David Preston guitar; Kevin Glasgow six string,electric jazz bass guitar; Laurie Lowe drums

It's that time again - the Parliamentary Service awards 2015 are now open for your nominations. Here's a suggestion - why don't we nominate Jazz Services for an award? Given their financial woes and loss of Arts Council grant they need all the support they can get...

Anyway here's the submission procedure...

FIRST STAGE – NOMINATIONS

Public nominations may be submitted online via the Jazz Services website, from now until December 12 2014. 

SECOND STAGE – SELECTION PANEL

Each year a selection panel is chosen to consider the public nominations. The panel represents a broad cross-section of backgrounds from the UK's jazz sector, with each member having their own particular area of expertise.

The Selection Panel collectively choose 3-5 nominees for each category from all the public nominations received. These selections are then passed to the 100 or so members of the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) for final consideration.

FINAL STAGE – WINNERS

The members of APPJAG choose the eventual winners in each category from the Nominees chosen by the jazz selection panel, co-chaired by Michael Connarty MP and Lord Colwyn.

The winners are announced in March 2015 at the annual Parliamentary Jazz Awards held at the House of Commons.

Paul Bream, from Jazz North East, writes about three reasons to be cheerful...

ONE: The Arts Council has awarded Jazz North East a grant designed to keep us going until July 2015. We are, of course, extremely grateful for this positive outcome.

TWO: The grant has been awarded specifically to support a diverse programme that includes ‘straightahead’ jazz, more contemporary approaches (with a strong emphasis on contemporary composition), and the free improvisation strand .

THREE: We are also being encouraged to develop the international links which in recent years have enabled us to bring an extraordinarily cosmopolitan cast of overseas musicians to Tyneside.

So, the financial security this grant has provided means that we’ve been able to confirm a tremendous programme for the comings months. We have musicians heading to Newcastle from all points of the globe.

Sax legend Bennie Maupin's only Northern date

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic Bitches Brew album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as Big Fun, Jack Johnson and On the Corner. He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band.

Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name but a few.

Maupin’s own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, The Jewel in The Lotus (1974), Slow Traffic to the Right (Mercury 1976), Moonscapes (Mercury 1978), and Driving While Black (Intuition 1998).The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin’s work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin’s contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson.

Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment. He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in Los Angeles, USA.

Lindsay Cooper was a celebrated bassoonist who died in 2013 from complications arising from multiple sclerosis. Between 1971 and 1997, she had took key roles in the influential avant-rock bands Comus and Henry Cow and in Mike Westbrook's jazz bands; gave solo recitals on bassoon and saxophones; and composed for theatre, dance, film, and jazz and contemporary-classical ensembles all over the world. Seminal progressive rock band Henry Cow have been reformed for this special occasion and will be playing Lindsay's Music for Films/News From Babel/Oh Moscow.

New York Brass Band at The Jazz Prom

"After a hugely successful Jazz Prom at St James Minster Cleethorpes involving Gypsy Jazz Ultraswing, the New York Brass Band and a youth group from Grimsby's Music Hub (MAPAS) Steel the Rhythm, Grimsby Jazz have another group of young people performing a support act at the Old Clee Club.

Thus 19th November the Phase 2 Jazz Orchestra are another Music and Performing Arts Service group. Saxophonist Stuart McDonald is providing workshops with the group in advance of the performance of this 30 piece band at 7.00pm  at 8.30pm Stuart will then take to the stage with his own band involving some of the top musicians in the region. Thom Whitworth on Trumpet, Warren Jolly double bass, John Perry drums and Lincolnshire's favourite guitarist Pat McCarthy.

This is followed up with a Christmas Special on Wed Dec 3rd with everyone's favourite saxophone player, Alan Barnes, who is joined by the lovely Nicola Farnon Trio with multi instrumentalist Piero Tucci and drummer Phil Johnson". Humphrey Lyttleton said about Nicola “She’s a remarkable performer on stage, a fine singer and an outstandingly swinging and propulsive bass player with an outgoing personality to match..!” Whatever time of year this line up will send you home happy!!

Freedom & Friendship – A 100 Years of Jazz

Europe’s two leading youth big bands celebrate 100 years of jazz history. Marking the centenary of the start of the First World War, this performance brings together the official youth jazz orchestra of the Federal Republic of Germany with our own National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

NYJO are on the road currently to Germany for the first leg of a unique project with our German counterparts the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany (BuJazzO). This will see 50 of the most talented young jazz musicians in Europe coming together to celebrate 100 years of jazz history, also marking the centenary of the start of the First World War. This is a ground-breaking collaboration between the two leading youth jazz orchestras in Europe to reflect on the significance of both these events and to set a future standard for cross-Europe youth jazz music-making.

There are three concerts in Germany this week followed-up by concerts at Leeds College of Music and the EFG London Jazz Festival in November

From Les and the team  - "First a great big thank you to all who came to the recent Carl Sinclair/John Hallam evening a couple of weeks ago. After expenses were covered, we raised a staggering sum in excess of £1,250 for Harrogate Samaritans. A superb effort all round and a wonderful evening's music.

We're working hard on next year's programme at present and, at this stage, delighted to announce that Stephanie Trick and Paolo will be returning in July; Jeff and Anne Barnhart will be with us in May and August. Return visits also from Enrico Tomasso, Roy Williams, Alan Barnes, T J Johnson, Amy Roberts and Jim Fryer plus many more of your favourites both local and from around the UK.

We do have something of a "logjam" with many more requests to play for us than there are available Saturdays. This is rewarding in many ways but regrettable that we just can't accommodate all those who wish to appear at Jazz in the Spa"

November
8th – Dave Mott’s Jazz Classics – one of the most professional and versatile groups to grace our stage. Led by Dave on reeds, the group includes young trumpet star Jamie Brownfield plus the wonderful Tom Kincaid on piano. Traditional jazz plus the standards with some delightful vocals from Suzanne.

15th – Dave Donohoe Jazz Band – a long overdue appearance by one of the unsung heroes of the British Jazz scene. Dave has been in the forefront of the “New Orleans style” since 1962. More a “style than a repertoire” is his belief and here’s a formidable line up including our own Frank Brooker on reeds, Teddy Fullick on trumpet, Tom Kincaid on piano and Jim Swinnerton on bass. Always a first class evening’s entertainment.

22nd - Old Fashioned Love Band – a changed format since the last appearance and one which will appeal to those who favour the Chicago-style Dixieland jazz in the Condon style. Led by Mike Pembroke on trombone with Dave Pogson on trumpet and Willie Entwistle on reeds with rhythm accompaniment. A lively evening is assured.

29th – Ron Burnett’s Mardi Gras Jazz Band – and to end the month on high note,  the warm sounds of Mardi Gras led by York’s “Mr Music”, Ron Burnett on trombone with the excellent Greg Wadman on trumpet. As the name suggests, good time jazz in a light hearted style played with verve and enthusiasm. Foot tapping jazz at its best!

December 
6th – Swing Commanders – a stonking full house session last year and multiple requests for another. This is a high octane, vibrant and highly versatile group which performs an exciting mix of 1940’s classics, boogie woogie, swing, jump jive and more. Most of the band play several instruments. Energetic showmanship with sophisticated vocal blend. Don’t miss it. £10.

13th – Djangologie – “Hot Club” style with a vengeance. An outstanding group from the North East which brings remarkable freshness to the Django Reinhart – Stephan Grappelli swing era sounds. Virtuoso guitar player and long standing friend Jim Birkett with Giles Strong on guitars, Emma Fisk on violin plus Mick Shoulder on bass. A “lighter touch” evening but they don’t come any more refreshing than this. Just the job to blow away the “pre-Christmas blues”. Oh yes, they do exist!

20th – Harlem Hot Stompers – believe it or not, the last session of the year. Comes round ever more quickly. Christmas Party Night with the customary mix of rip roaring traditional jazz from the Harlems plus delectable Christmas fare provided by yourselves and shared around plus the special Christmas raffle. Do join us – but do come early as another full house guaranteed.

Saxophonist Benn regularly commutes from the USA to Europe. This top-notch band features pianist Cecilia Coleman from Los Angeles. Tickets are £9

26 November- Trio North with John Etheridge

John has worked with Soft Machine, Stephane Grappelli and Nigel Kennedy among others. Pat Metheny described John as, ”one of the best guitarists in the world”. Ben Crosland – bass and drummer Dave Tyas complete the group. Tickets are £8

"The Northern Line is full to the brim..."

No, it's not another announcement on London's creaky transport system, but actually it is good news for jazz in the North. Jazz North's "Northern Line" scheme, (which makes in possible for Northern  musicians to play jazz gigs which are paid properly and for Northern Jazz Clubs to afford them) - has been so successful that is has had to be closed for any further new bookings for performances until 1st April 2015.

Lucy Woolley from Jazz North writes:

"There have been an unprecedented 90 bookings in the first 6 months of 2014/15 and another 50+ gigs coming up over the next 5 months. This is an indication of the success that Northern Line and its promoters and artists have achieved in a relatively short space of time, and has demonstrated the need and value of such an innovative touring scheme.

Round 2 artists will still be able to be booked for gigs taking place after April 1^st 2015 up until December 31^st 2015. Jazz North will also be launching applications for Round 3 of the scheme in December, for a new roster of artists to be announced in spring and performing gigs from September 2015 to December 2016.

Thank you for your contribution to the scheme so far – we hope you’ll continue to work with us on Northern Line and other Jazz North projects in the near future.
