17th – Keith Nichols + John Hallam + Graham Smith – the Blue Three – now here’s a first appearance for JITS which we are more than proud to present. Keith Nichols – one of the UK’s most respected jazz musicians and pianist extraordinaire - joins forces with our favourite reeds player John Hallam to provide an evening of outstanding classic jazz. We guarantee you will be bowled over by this session. £10

24th Kevin Grenfall’s Jazz Giants with John Hallam – led by the irrepressible Kevin on trombone and ably supported our star reeds player John Hallam and Danny Hammerton on trumpet. Then add a first class rhythm section with Phil Nice from Denmark on piano to complete this impressive line up.

31st – Savannah Jazz Band – our local heroes return once more to one of their favourite venues. Traditional jazz at its best with some rollickin’ rhythm and blues thrown in for good measure. Always a classic JITS evening with humour in abundance.

Jazz at Hornby present absolutely spiffing foot tapping music from the 20’s 30’s & 40’s featuring "Deco Delight"

Rosie Harrison - reeds. Rosie began playing and singing at the age of 5. the Clarinet quickly followed at the age of 7 by the saxophone at high school. Rosie was a member of the Lancashire schools concert band and toured Europe and made several T. V. appearances with the Blackpool sixth form college big band. Rosie has worked as a teacher for the Blackpool music service and is now teaching piano, vocals, clarinet and sax at Broughton music academy. Rosie has a degree in music from Lancaster University and as well as Deco Delight she has appeared with other jazz musicians, including Alan Barnes, Tom Kincaid, Bruce Adams, and Gilad Atzmon, making appearances at jazz clubs around the UK.

Gerry Clayton bass and vocals. Gerry started his music career in Liverpool. The Cavern Club, New Brighton Tower And The Locarno Ballrooms being a few of the many venues he has worked in. Later he became a session musician recording at Strawberry and other studios. Moving to Blackpool in 1988 he formed his own Quartet entertaining the Holiday makers in the resort. He joined "Deco Delight" in 2014.

Pete Lindup brass and vocals - Pete has been a professional entertainer for many years. Pete has toured the country with a variety of shows and has been featured in summer seasons in his native Blackpool, as well as appearing in numerous Christmas Pantomimes. Jazz is his first love, especially the 'traditional' style, and is often to be seen 'guesting' with various bands around the North West, either playing trumpet/cornet, trombone or even sousaphone as required.

Lawrence Marshall (guitar and janjo) originates from Brighton and started playing Jazz in 1962. Later he then started playing with bands in the Northants and Bedfordshire area. He came to Morecambe in 2002. and worked with various bands in the North West since then. Lawrence is an extremely accomplished player, and has played at many venues throughout the U. K.

Peter Eddowes (percussion) started playing classical music at the age of 10, and later as a teenager was influenced by the big bands and started to play Jazz. Peter worked for comedian Jim Bowen, and has also performed on Radio and T. V. He has also worked with some great musicians, such as, Cy Laurie, Neville Dickie, Roy Williams, John Barnes, Enrico Tomasso and John Hallam. As well as playing at many venues throughout the U. K. which include Hotels, Festivals and Theatres, he has also played, on Cruise ships.

Great North Big Band Jazz Festival is back

North East March Jazz Review from Russell Corbett

Lots of variety throughout the north east region during March with the biggest event by far kick-starting matters at the beginning of the month in Chester le Street. For the second consecutive year the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival will be staged at Park View Community Centre. A three day competition big band festival (March 2-4), bands travel from across northern England and further afield in the hope of getting the nod from the festival’s adjudicators. Thirty bands will take part in schools, youth and senior sections with the standard incredibly high and, it appears, getting better year on year. Countless young, talented musicians have taken part over the years and many of them have gone on to study jazz at prestigious music conservatoires in Britain and America. This year’s renewal – GNBBJF is in its fifteenth year – promises to be just as good as previous editions, it really is a highlight of the jazz year.

At the opposite end of the month Alan Barnes and Dave Newton undertake the first two gigs of their four-date tour of rural venues. March 29 sees the duo out in the wilds of Weardale to play Stanhope’s St Thomas’ Church Hall followed by Wingates Village Institute (Mar 30) which is in Northumberland between Morpeth and Rothbury. If the cold snap has abated these venues are well worth checking out.

In between times there is much else to hear. Regionally based pianists and a Hammond organ specialist are out and about. Two of them vie for your jazz pound on the first of the month. Alan Glen, doyen of other piano players, plays the Jazz Co-op’s Globe public house HQ with bassist John Pope and drummer Paul Wight. Meanwhile, down the road at Durham’s Empty Shop, Stu Collingwood will be working with Tyneside’s Empress of the Blues, Mo Scott, in trio format with Russ Morgan, drums. Hammond maestro Gerry Richardson’s Trio plays a lunchtime concert at Durham’s Gala (Mar 9th). It’s already a sellout, so, check at the box office on the day for returns.
Teesside-based pianist James Harrison plays a lunchtime trio engagement at Newcastle’s Lit & Phil, March 16, and on the evening Tyneside-based pianist Paul Edis takes his sextet down to Opus 4 Jazz Club in Darlington.

National and international names visit during March. Newcastle’s Jazz Café presents Skeltr on Friday 2, Treppenwitz on Friday 9, and on March 23rd there is a return visit by the Leeds-based master guitarist Jiannis Pavlidis. In contrast, Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club presents the TJ Johnson Band with guest trumpeter Jamie Brownfield (Mar 3rd, lunchtime), contrasting big style with NYC-based cellist Daniel Levin at Newcastle’s Bridge Hotel (Mar 4) in a double bill with the newly-formed Squeteague comprising Graeme Wilson, Andy Champion and Stu Brown. Later in March (29) pianist Dominic J Marshall gigs at the Globe with his Netherlands-based trio.

One final event to mention. Pete Tanton’s Riviera Quartet plays an album launch gig on March 15 at the Jazz Café. The band’s CD has been reviewed elsewhere in the jazz blogosphere, suffice to say, this is one gig that can’t fail.     

                   

Courtney Pine and the Directors Series head north

For the fourth edition of the Jazz Directors Series, Courtney Pine will be joined by the Inner City Ensemble, a changing lineup of some of the UK’s most exciting emerging professional jazz and crossover musicians for dates in Manchester, Leeds, Clitheroe and Lancaster

The Jazz Directors Series is a two-year residency and touring project which brings together emerging UK professional jazz musicians with an internationally revered Jazz Director.

Each tour is a collaboration between Band on the Wall and four independent jazz promoters based across the North of England who will be mentored by the established regional promoter and producer Root Music.

For the fourth edition of the Jazz Directors Series, Pine will be joined by the Inner City Ensemble, a changing lineup of some of the UK’s most exciting emerging professional jazz and crossover musicians.

Russell Corbett's preview of Newcastle and North East February gigs

February offers something for everyone right across the North East. The star name is Paul Booth. Brought up in County Durham, Booth first came to the attention of the jazz public sitting in at Blaydon Jazz Club at the age of fourteen or so. A Newcastle College music graduate, Booth subsequently toured the world with pop and rock acts, and, to this day continues to work with
Steve Winwood. Booth’s jazz gigs in the region are few and far between (most recently heard playing with the BBC Big Band), and now there is an opportunity to hear him as guest soloist with  Newcastle’s Strictly Smokin’ Big Band. Alphabetti Theatre, in the centre of town is a new venue for jazz, tickets are flying out the door, so if you want to hear Booth with a storming big band the date for your diary is Saturday 17. The contemporary scene makes its presence felt during the month with several enticing gigs; Jazz North East presents the trio of Luis Vicente, Olie Brice and Mark Sanders (Feb 11), at the Bridge Hotel, Group Theory (Durham University students) in a double bill with Paul Edis’ Early Bird work shop band at the Jazz Café (Feb 15), and Luxembourg piano trio Dock in Absolute (Jazz Café, Feb 23). The Jazz Café’s promotion present on Friday 16 London-based Bahla playing their infectious mix of Jewish folk music and jazz. In preparation for this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival (April 6-8) Leeds-based Chris Sharkey is keen to work shop new material and will be doing just that in the company of James Mainwaring (Feb 21), again at the Jazz Café in Newcastle. Bassist John Pope plays a gig with his quintet (including Johnny Hunter) at Gosforth Jazz Club, Newcastle (Feb 8).

Mid February it’s Mardi Gras. Billy Bootleggers in Newcastle is a relatively new music venue, presenting the very best in rhythm and blues, but on Tuesday 13th it invites Graham Hardy’s Northern Monkey Brass Band to mark the occasion N’Awlins-style.

Top notch vocalists are out in force during the month; Seal, for one (Tues 13th at Sage Gateshead) , and Alice Grace at Bonbar, Newcastle (lunchtime diner’s gig, Sunday 8). Zoë Gilby sings at Durham’s Empty Shop (Dec 15) working with bassist Andy Champion, and the previous evening Gateshead-based Gilby will be in Hartburn Village at the Masham public house in the company of Teesside-based trumpeter Noel Dennis. Hexham Jazz Club has booked Debra Milne to sing with Don Forbes’ bop infused Safe Sextet at the Fox Inn (Feb 27), Paul Skerritt maintains his Darlington residency at the Pennyweight on Thursday 22.

Two other things to mention – guitarist Bradley Johnston has recently established a residency in his home town of Sunderland at the recently opened (and still developing) cultural arts venue known as the Fire Station. Sundays, six o’clock, show your support it. And finally, the Traveller’s Rest in Darlington presents Alan Barnes on Friday 9th with the Paul Edis Trio. It’s what is known
as a ‘no-brainer’. Eight for eight thirty!

Refu Jazz charity jazz event at Heart Leeds

Refu-jazz returns to HEART in Headingley Leeds for a day of live jazz performances and workshops in aid of several refugee charities.

Some of Yorkshire’s finest jazz musicians are coming together to help raise desperately needed funds for people fleeing war. Please come along and support this event and enjoy some incredible music.
