From storming post-Coltrane energy to beautiful ballad playing, Los Angeles-based Benn Clatworthy has matured into a truly great tenor player. A favourite with jazz audiences for many years for his emotional playing and his dry sense of humour, supported by a top-class rhythm section featuring New York composer and big band leader Cecelia Coleman.

Born in the UK but now resident in Los Angeles, Clatworthy has been a regular in clubs there for two decades, and has worked with artists such as Cedar Walton, Lionel Hampton, Johnny ‘Hammond’ Smith and Jimmy Cleveland. His latest recording, Let’s Face the Music (Maestro, 2000), epitomises his approach: ‘If you’re not affecting emotions, music has little value.’

A fixture in Los Angeles area clubs since 1980, Benn Clatworthy was originally heavily influenced by late-’50s John Coltrane, but would soften his tone and sometimes sound a little like Warne Marsh with touches of Sonny Rollins.

Newcastle's Jazz Cafe on the move

News from the Jazz Cafe in Newcastle....

You may have already heard the rumours... Yes they are true we are moving!

The Cafe has had it's roots on Pink Lane for over 25 years now and it has outgrown the current premises. The current venue will be split into two levels, ground floor for takeouts or a quick cuppa and an upper mezzanine, cosy and full of character, for lunch or reading the paper will provide some Saturday afternoon live jazz duos. Chef Natalie will still be making her famous cakes and scones!

The live jazz concerts will move in with the Black Swan Basement Bar and Venue on Wesgate Road which is currently undergoing some changes to give it the 1920's vibe with a new stage in the main bar and the larger venue with its capacity of 200, better access for all and a larger stage so we will be able to host larger touring bands along with some old favourites. Not to mention the off street courtyard to enjoy lunch or an evening drink (when the summer arrives of cause)

The Jazz Cafe's last day on Pink Lane will be Saturday 27th of Oct and will reopen in the new venue on Tuesday 6th Nov. Tuesdays Jam on the 30th of Oct will take place in the new home at the Black Swan, 69 Westgate Rd.

Northern jazz success at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards

So good to see jazz musicians, organisers and supporters recognised at this year's Parliamentary Jazz Awards in London on Tuesday 16th October!

Jez Matthews and his team have developed a gem of a jazz venue at the Lescar in Sheffield - with the very best from the contemporary jazz scene playing to enthusiastic audiences not only there but at other Sheffield venues such as Yellow Arch studios and Roco. Worthy winners (and the third Yorkshire jazz club in a row) to win the Jazz Venue of the Year award. He is an inspiration to young jazz musicians and his music manages to fuse South-Asian folk and jazz with elements of rock, classical, and folk. Grimsby Jazz Projects big adventure

Grimsby Jazz Projects is going on a big adventure over the coming year, including a trip to space in a rocket and a voyage to the bottom of the sea in a submarine.

Thanks to funding from Arts Council England, Grimsby Jazz Projects and La Luna are producing brand new projects in partnership with the NEL Music Hub bringing stories, singing and a sprinkle of magic to primary schools in our area.

As we speak, a rocket is under construction to take Cosmo and Carrie (aged 8 ) up to space to discover what is out there amongst the stars. Cosmo and Carrie will be visiting primary schools in NE Lincs with their rocket and Carrie’s cat, who is a keen explorer.

With new songs, a brand new story plus workshops and resources – not to mention a big Singing Festival at the Auditorium – the project is ready to take off. And space is just the beginning. We’ll be announcing more details as we go along.

Who’s Involved?
La Luna is the organising force behind the successful bid but it’s the creative team at Grimsby Jazz Projects who will be leading on the delivery with support from MAPAS.

Josie Moon, Pat McCarthy, Matt Gray and Hetty McCarthy will produce and deliver the work across NE Lincs. Art work for the project is coming from the imagination and pencils of Vivienne May with design, layout and production of resources from Paul Davy and GSB Print and Design.

Concert For Keith Tippett

There will be an intimate Concert For Keith Tippett at "Over The Top", Sheffield on Sunday 28th October at 7:30 pm. The venue is very small and only 25 tickets are available and we are asking for a minimum donation of £10.

The concert will feature pianist, Matthew Bourne plus Martin Archer (woodwind), Mick Beck (also woodwind) and Peter Fairclough (percussion).

Volunteering opportunities at Newcastle's Jazz Co-op

There are a couple of specific areas where we could use extra volunteer input at the moment at the Newcastle Jazz Co-op, and we'd very much appreciate it if you could consider offering some time to help with the following tasks:

(1) Ali (Bar Manager at The Globe) has asked if we could recruit one or two volunteers to support his efforts to keep the Globe clean on a regular basis.  He would like someone twice a week for 2 hours each shift to work (or 2 people doing one two hour shift each) while he is in the building.  Ideally, to be helpful, this would need to be a regular commitment.  If you have some time to spare and think you might want to help out, please email Ali (ali@theglobenewcastle.bar) to find out more.

(2) It would be great if more people were prepared to volunteer for all or part of the Duty Manager role at jazz gigs/events at The Globe.  This would include taking money at the door, and running either the downstairs or Jazz bars.  Gigs happen regularly on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.  Ali will provide full bar training for anyone wishing to take this on.  To find out more, please email Jen Errington (jenerrington@googlemail.com).

For the Ribble Valley Jazz Club's October gig  we feature international touring band, Tria Lingvo, a notable Cologne-based German trio which with guest, Manchester guitar virtuoso Mike Walker bringing a musical encounter of the highest order at the start of a new UK tour. This award winning trio, combined with Mike Walker’s guitar mastery, will present an award-winning repertoire of new quartet music.

Tria Lingvo, winners of the 2014 New German Jazzprize, offers an innovative and creative approach to the traditional trio format. The band is at home exploring the fascinating ground found between Modern Jazz, energy-laden improvisation and ethnic music. It is highly respected on their home scene, having performed with the likes of Dominique Pifarély, Zoltan Lantos & Ramesh Shotham at festivals such as Leverkusener Jazztage, Enjoy Jazz Festival, & Vive le Jazz.

Mike Walker, one of the most prolific UK musicians of his generation, has built a distinguished performing, composing and teaching career in UK & Europe over almost forty years that has featured international touring and highly recognised collaborations. We’re so excited about the next couple of months. There’s so much variety in our programme, covering jazz, improv, song, folk, and electronic music, and musicians from across the UK and Europe. It includes 2 double bills of brilliant young bands emerging from the Leeds and Birmingham jazz scenes (Samantha Wright, Bela Horvath, Josh Schofield, and Morpher), Sam Rapley touring with a glorious new album, and Land of If, led by drummer Simon Roth with a unique line-up featuring vocals, cello, viola, guitar and music inspired by everyone from Ligeti to Radiohead, and PJ Harvey. October ends with Olie Brice leading an incredible line-up featuring US drums legend Jeff Williams. In the middle of all that we go out on an excursion under our pseudonym of Lines + Spaces, with a great four band line up covering folk, jazz and indie, at a lovely venue, The Holt.


In November we’ve got a quietly innovative and adventurous trio from Leeds, Treppenwitz, plus drummer Lorraine Baker, a real rising star brings a truly all star band celebrating the music of Ed Blackwell. Norwegian guitarist Eirik Svela comes to us having recorded his debut album in New York, and we finish off November with a double bill that’s sure to fire up the Lescar backroom with Sheffield based band Bad Brew and sax duo Skeltr mixing beats and electronics with fiery sax playing.

Finally we’re really pleased that Jazz at The Lescar is one of three venues/promoters from across the UK to have been shortlisted for the prestigious Jazz Venue of the Year at the 2018 Parliamentary Jazz awards. This is a complete honour for us, and needless to say we’re absolutely delighted.

Hull Jazz Festival returns 14 - 17 November

Dame Evelyn Glennie and HLK 17 November 

Hull Jazz Festival returns from Wed- Sat 14 - 17 November with four days of live music that showcase the diversity of the UK jazz scene.

Trombonist Paul Taylor and poet John Robinson bring together a company of eight local artists to pay tribute in words and music to the Hull Pals Battalions of WW1, marking the centenary of the end of the war. They open the festival at Hull Truck Theatre on Wednesday 14 November with Other Ranks.

Rising star trumpeter Laura Jurd brings her band Dinosaur to Hull Truck Theatre for the first time on Thursday 15 November. Synth-pop meets jazz band on their critically-lauded 2018 album Wonder Trail, packed with folk-infused grooves and glistening melodies.

Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint brings his Allstar 5tet to Hull Truck Theatre on Friday 16 November, performing tracks from their acclaimed new project Brother Raymond. Gathering 4-star reviews on its release earlier this year, it’s a daring suite of original pieces that build on the legacy of the late, great Art Blakey whilst showcasing the talent and power of this new generation of musicians.

On Saturday 17 November at Hull Truck Theatre, virtuoso guitarist and composer Gonzalo Bergara explores what might have happened if Django Reinhardt had met Tango maestro Astor Piazzolla. With a quartet featuring some of the UK’s most accomplished Gypsy Jazz performers, he effortlessly blends the sounds of Parisian swing and his native Argentina.

Singer and songwriter Juliet Kelly is hailed as one of the UK's finest jazz voices. She’ll be joined by her friends from Hull Junior Choir at the Albemarle Music Centre on Saturday 17 November. Juliet Kelly’s Family Jazz Show is a fun-filled celebration of great jazz singers past and present, with plenty of chances for the audience (young and old!) to join in.

Trio HLK team up with the world’s leading solo percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie MBE, in an incredible new collaboration. Glennie’s approach to sound creation is the perfect match for Trio HLK’s complex rhythms and virtuosic improvisation. Combined, they’re an explosive tour de force and you can see them at Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 17 November

The festival closes with The Trojan Story at Hull City Hall on Saturday 17 November. Jazz Jamaica All Stars, with a line-up featuring some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians, celebrate 50 years of the legendary reggae label Trojan Records.

A fascinating month of music at JazzLeeds

October - and another fascinating month of music at JazzLeeds. Our concerts includes slide blues guitarist Lucy Zirins, international superstar jazz guitarist Mike Walker and Tria Lingvo, London based vocalist Fini Bearman singing the music of David Bowie, local heroes Jamie Taylor Richard Iles and Munch Manship plus US based bebop saxman Benn Clatworthy with New York pianist Cecelia Coleman. In this intimate and exposing lineup they will be revisiting and exploring some of David Bowie’s most-loved songs, as well as delving into some of his lesser-known back catalogue. Jamie Taylor and Richard Iles   
Inkwell – Sunday 21 Oct 1.30pm £9/7 (NUS/Under 25's half price, kids under 16 free) Jamie Taylor guitar, Richard Iles flugelhorn Richard and Jamie have been established for many years as two of the leading musicians and educators on the Northern scene. Although they have worked together in quartet and trio settings before, this will be the first time these two artists have performed together as a duo. Expect to hear a mixture of original compositions by both, alongside some choice selections from standard repertoire.

Munch Manship Quintet

Munch Manship -sax and flute, Derrick Harris -guitar, Andrzej Baranek- piano, Paul Baxter -bass, Paul Smith -drums Munch Manship is a veteran saxman and flautist from Manchester who has featured in jazz clubs around the country, playing alongside many international stars such as Ronnie Scott, Bobby Shew, Jim Mullen, Don Weller, John Etheridge and Humphrey Lyttleton.

Rush Hour Jazz -Ed Kainyek with the JazzLeeds trio Wed 17 October@Seven Arts bar 6-7pm payf. An alumnus of the Leeds Jazz Rock Orchestra and now a local legend on the Manchester jazz scene, Ed Kainyek cites Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, Joe Henderson, Phil Woods and Grover Washington as key influences on his playing, although his sound is truly his own, and with each solo he makes his own statement.

Parr jazz- feast this October

Jazz, in all its forms, a booming part of Liverpool’s music scene. Tuesday’s Parrjazz delivers a storming jam session in Studio2 Parr Street with jazz touring players – they’ve had Japanese martial arts rockers and American proggers playing with students and Liverpool schmoozers. For over 10 years, Liverpool’s Parrjazz has promoted top international players: Snarky Puppy/FORQ/Gogo Penguin/Alan Barnes/Dennis Rollins and loads more.

Angular free-jazz, early roots, ragtime, classic swing, the coolest cool cats, jazz-rock fusion, prog, funk and trippy youngsters working their way out of the trancey psych soup. Summer to autumn in Liverpool has seen spectacular artists. June was kicked off into a dark gothic castle by Liverpool’s own Blind Monk Trio cascading Black Sabbath/Stranglers/Coltrane at Ma Boyle’s Alehouse and Eatery; the local vicar sat outside, cigar and a single malt.

The rest of June in Studio2 was a blast. San Francisco’s Paul McCandless with Charged Particles, closing off with a packed house for USA’s finest Prog/Fusion outfit, FORQ, touring their latest record Thrēq. FORQ’s storming acid-jazz rocker Cowabunghole created a jazz mosh pit! July gave us The California Jazz Conservatory showcasing west coast talent. Nashville’s Suzahn Fiering gave us a master class in songwriting. As August broke, Barry’s Boptet smashed out the best of Be Bop - Herdsmen to Miles Davis. Sax legend Dean Masser carried on the theme. September, had Guitar/Hammond/Drums combo Tobie Carpenter Organ Trio, touring their debut EP Dead Pan Party.

October is a jazz-feast. Leading UK Jazz talents Brigitte Beraha’s Babelfish on the 2nd, UNMISSABLE Bristopian jazz-trippers Get The Blessing on the 11th (Tickets from See Tickets/Skiddle), Robert Mitchell's Epiphany 3 on 16th, guitarist Stuart McCallum on 23rd, with the insane Baked A La Ska Halloween Special on the 30th. November will feature two sax heavyweights – Benn Clatworthy and Greg Abate………… nice!

Three festival previews in the North East

The north east of England's jazz scene is thriving with no fewer than three festivals in October. The second Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music occupies the first few days of the month with highlights including a free admission lunchtime concert by free jazz veteran Joe McPhee at Newcastle University (Oct 4), Stan Sulzmann and Nikki Iles (Oct 5) and a rare appearance by Peter Brötzmann (Oct 6), both at the Lit and Phil, and a first visit to the region by American trumpeter Nate Wooley at the Bridge Hotel (Oct 7).

The following weekend sees the return of the Berwick Jazz Weekend. The second edition of the annual north Northumberland event features Tom Bancroft leading his band In Common (Oct 12) and the following day (11am) running a workshop for those interested in jazz and the Indian classical music tradition. The recently formed Edinburgh-based Tenement Jazz Band makes the short trip south of the border to play a gig comprising 'classic jazz' era-inspired numbers (Oct 13) and Djazzville's Hot Club-flavoured Sunday jazz brunch (Oct 14) concludes matters at the Maltings Theatre and Cinema.   

And one week later (Oct 19-21) there is a third festival, the first Middlesbrough Weekender at the Town Hall. Forty years ago the Newport Jazz Festival came to Middlesbrough. Yes, George Wein's legendary NYC festival pitched up at Ayresome Park, the former home of Middlesbrough Football Club, bringing with it some of the all-time greats of the music; Ella, Hamp, the Jazz Messengers, MJQ, Buddy Rich and many others. Following major renovation works, the recently reopened Town Hall will welcome some of today's leading practitioners including Beats and Pieces Big Band, Laura Jurd's Dinosaur, Printmakers and two bands with a living link to the events of 1978 - NYJO and the 88 years young Chris Barber. To top it all, Sunday's closing concert (Oct 21) features all the way from NYC, via a week-long run at Ronnie Scott's, the magnificent Mingus Big Band.
