APRIL 24 Nicki Allan Quintet
Singer and pianist, Nicki’s influences go from the subtle, beautiful tones of Shirley Horn, Ella Fitzgerald and Joni Mitchell to vibrant, rhythmic latin, swing and contemporary sounds. All underpinned with her stylish bluesy phrasing and love of vocal improvisation. Nicki was awarded the coveted title of Jazz yorkshire vocalist of the year in 2011 for her contribution to jazz. There will be a healthy mixture of old and new material accompanied by her team of distinguished northern musicians: Joel Purnell (saxophone) Ian Chalk (hello again) John Settle (drums) and Adrian Knowles (double bass). £8

This Friday (5th April) - last gig before Easter at Wakefield Jazz - Artpipes e.V. presents NORTH BY NORTHWEST: Mike Walker (Manchester) meets Tria Lingvo (Cologne) - the remarkable Mike Walker (guitar) in collaboration with Tria Lingvo from Cologne - Johannes Lemke (Saxophones), André Nendza (Bass) and Christoph Hillmann (Drums, Prepared Drums, Udu, Garrahand and Kalimba). This international meeting of remarkable musicians will feature new quartet music written for the collaboration, award-winning repertoire from the featured trio, plus Walker's guitar mastery, exploring the endlessly fascinating ground found between Modern Jazz, energy-laden improvisation and ethnic musics.

The Wabash Jazzmen at Dove

Sat 20 July marks the return to the Dove Jazz boards of the hot yet drumless band known as the Wabash Jazzmen. It has its roots loosely based on what many would still call and recognise as being the ‘Potteries’ although its present line up does include a couple of overseas players from the twitch free cricketing squares of South  Manchester.

As you will be able to hear first-hand tonight the absence of a drum kit is more than compensated for by the driving banjo playing of their leader  Mark Challinor. Mark’s considerable musical prowess is most ably promoted by the entertaining and powerful bass playing of Richard Vernon. Richard is a vastly experienced string bass player whom it is always a special pleasure to welcome back to the Dove podium. Who can forget his numerous appearances playing alongside the greatly missed but never forgotten Tommy Burton and his  Sporting House Quartet that featured drummer Dave Holmes a youngish Tom Langham on banjo playing with Mr Vernon. I don’t think that it is a state secret that Mr Langham always lovingly and respectfully referred to him as ‘Mr Pastry’ and still does.

Featuring on the front line on trumpet and harmonica plus the odd vocal will be Bill Smith a man whose enthusiasm for our music never gives any hint of waning. His energetic approach to his profession is a glowing example to many much younger musicians who could do much worse than take a leaf out of his book. Much the same sentiments could be expressed about tonight’s trombone maestro Mike Pembroke who joins Bill in being described as an overseas player residing amongst the cricketing strong holds of Bredbury, Woodley, Romiley and Compstall. We have Mike Hayler on clarinet and tenor sax completing the front line. He is eternally grateful to the ‘Centre of the Universe’ for affording him the opportunity to be a founder member of the indefatigable ‘Bibbington Limeburners’ Brass Band.  His dedication to the cause of ‘Temperance’ that the Limeburners famously promoted earned him many fanciful plaudits

*Emily Kent project The Emily Kent Project combines contemporary jazz with distinct grooves inspired by musicians such as Pat Metheny, Bobby Mcferrin and Norma Winston. Her set will also make use of a full band and other instrumental features, combining to bring their audience a performance of world inspired Jazz music.

*Yaatri feat Liam De Tar Yaatri is a five piece jazz crossover quintet formed in Leeds in 2018. Their blend of complex composition and ethereal soundscapes captivates the heart as well as the mind. Influenced by the emotive quality of the Scandinavian jazz tradition, the momentum of the rhythms of India and the energy of rock and roll, their music has a strong sense of purpose and journey.

*Alasdair Pennington Quintet Quintet featuring tenor, trumpet, piano, double bass, piano and drums. Expect swing, contemporary bebop heads and modern arrangements of American Songbook compositions which attempt to experiment with timbre, time feel, dynamic contrast and group improvisation and communication.

Liverpool Jazz present Jeremy Sassoon's Ray Charles project

Originally launched at the Manchester Jazz Festival in 2009, Jeremy Sassoon’s tribute to the music of Ray Charles captures the imagination of Jazz, Blues and Soul audiences alike. Since then the show has gone on to headline Ronnie Scott's, The Jazz Cafe, Bluesfest at the O2, Manchester Jazz Festival, Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues Festival and most recently the 2018 Wigan International Jazz Festival.

The late, great Ray Charles produced an immense repertoire of memorable tunes spanning several decades, and singer/pianist Jeremy reflects this with a set that include Ray Charles classics (Georgia on my Mind, What I’d Say, I Gotta Woman, Hallelujah I Love Her So) and some lesser known, but equally compelling musical gems from the catalogue (The Jealous Kind, I Don’t Need No Doctor, Hardhearted Hannah)

The Ray Charles Project always showcases the UK’s finest musicians and tonight is no exception. Mike Walker features on guitar (Impossible Gentlemen, Mike Gibbs, George Russell), multi-instrumentalist and local legend Steve Parry plays lead trumpet, and all arrangements come courtesy of tenor saxophonist and MD Iain Dixon (BBC Big Band, Michael Brecker, Bryan Ferry). The show is further lit up by Jeremy's stunning trio of backing vocalists, the “Jaelettes”.
