Performing contemporary jazz with a gospel-tinged, and folk inspired, freedom and abandon, the Sam Leak Trio invoke the joy and emotion typified by Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett’s 1960s trios. Drawing on Sam’s background in music psychology, the music will be interspersed with fascinating insights about music and how we perceive it.

Parrjazz's 2020 was kicked off brilliantly by fantastic gigs from Wako at The Kazimier Stockroom, Rob Stringer at the Hope Street Hotel, and lots of great guests at Ma Boyles. And we have started as we mean to go on...

First up on 11th February, we are joined by the Canadian Jazz talent Nick Maclean Quartet feat Brownman Ali. Led by 26-year old fast-rising piano star Nick Maclean is a 6x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto, his quartet are joined by Gurus's Jazzmattazz Brownman Ali, heralded as “Canada’s preeminent Jazz trumpeter” by NYC’s Village Voice, multi award-winning trumpet player Ali stands at the forefront of innovation in the Canadian jazz community.

29/2/20: Dave McGarry and John McCormick The Two Macs are back in town! Jamie Cullum-esque vocals and piano from Dave McGarry and the best bass in town from John 'The count' McCormick.

Wakefield Jazz Feb 2020 - 4 gigs plus one special event

Following a storming exuberant evening with Pigfoot last week, we look forward to four more excellent Friday gigs at Wakefield Sports Club in February.

Fri 7th - Nicola Farnon Trio - the ace singer/double bassist returns with an enticing selection of standards and originals, featuring Piero Tucci on piano and tenor sax, plus Phil Johnson on drums.

Fri 14th - Martin Speake’s International Quartet with Ethan Iverson (piano), Calum Gourlay (bass) and Jorge Rossy (drums). An unparalleled all-star line-up of top contemporary improvisers bringing the best of current jazz to West Yorkshire - Iverson, famous for his work with The Bad Plus (and his “Do The Math” interviews at ethaniverson.com) and Rossy, a member of Brad Mehldau’s influential 90s trio complement Martin Speake’s intense lyricism. 

Fri 21st - The Sound Of 59 - led by bassist Adrian Knowles, an all-star northern septet take us through some of the groundbreaking music of this exceptional year in jazz - think Davis’ Kind Of Blue, Mingus’ Ah Um, Brubeck’s Time Out, Coltrane’s Giant Steps and more. Two saxes, trumpet and trombone plus rhythm section. Come early at 7.30pm for Pete Rosser’s Suite Rhubarb - new rhubarb-inspired jazz compositions with Julia Mills (sax), Nick Wells (bass), drums TBC and Pete on piano, plus Wakefield Sings! singing some rhubarb-related songs - all in support of the Wakefield Rhubarb Festival that week.

Fri 28th - Remi Harris Duo - the return of the virtuoso guitarist, with Tom Moore on double bass - from Django to Jimi, and all points in between.

And a special mention for Wakefield Big Band’s gig on Sunday 23rd Feb 6.00pm at the Sports Club, with special guest Dennis Rollins on trombone. Well worth supporting!

Jazz Leeds goes international...

Our Jazz Leeds international season starts this month bringing some of the finest musicians in the world to Leeds. In February we have one of the most exciting young vocalists on the European jazz scene, Emilia Mårtensson from Sweden, a superb quartet fronted by two of the most original improvisers on either side of the Atlantic US pianist Ethan Iverson and Britain’s Martin Speake on sax, plus some more local favourites - saxman Ed Kainiek, guitarist Jeff Hewer and local Leeds heroes the Soul Surgeons.

Sunday afternoon 9 February 1.30-4pm Nine-piece band who really rocked the Chapel Allerton Festival Jazz Sunday this year in Regent Street. Blues, jazz soul, music from Etta James to Tom Jones, the Blues brothers to Dusty Springfield, Motown and much more in between. Bringing the soul back into jazz!

As well as promoting the Southport Jazz Festival, the unstoppable Neil Hughes has a special jazz event coming up at the Cinammon Club - and he's writing a book!


 Joe Stilgoe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter. He has created a fresh sound for jazz in the 21st century, known for writing songs that feel like they've been around for years, and adapting classics that sound as though they were just written. Over the course of his varied career he has become a true modern-day entertainer, known globally as a performer of wit, style and a level of musicianship which has seen him recognised as one of the best singer-pianists in the world. Always searching for a new way of bringing not only his own songs but those he loves from the past to a new audience, he is an enticing mix of his heroes Danny Kaye, Nat King Cole and Dudley Moore.

Joe has toured around the world with his band and as a solo act, appearing in festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls from Ronnie Scott’s to The Barbican to Birdland in New York. As well as frequent guest performances he regularly puts together his own Big Band for sold-out shows across the country, and he is in demand as a soloist with the world’s finest orchestras including the RPO, John Wilson Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra.
