Scarborough awaits you!

Vimala Rowe

Mike Gordon writes - the line up is all arranged for the Scarborough Jazz Festival 25-27 September 2105. Again we have a mix of well-established performers, chosen because I feel their jazz is continually developing, and younger bands with a diversity of musical agendas.  Big sounds will come from the 26-piece Engines Orchestra, led by Phil Meadows, and Beats & Pieces.

There’s some strong vocal jazz.  Ian Shaw, a long time festival favourite, is joined by the world class trumpeter Guy Barker.  Recently on the scene and making a great impression is singer Ben Cox and from the North we are delighted to have the charismatic Zoe Gilby.  Our Festival cover picture is the superb vocalist Vimala Rowe, a member of the intriguing Jazz@CafĂ© Society project.

We have some very classy musicians from the USA: Jean Toussaint (ex Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, Horace Silver …); Darius Brubeck, highlight of a previous festival; two New York stars making up pianist Barry Green’s trio; and Michael Janisch, who has done so much to promote jazz links between America and the UK, with Paradigm Shift.

Our compere will again be Alan Barnes who will join up with pianist Dave Newton and saxophonist Tony Kofi to display his usual inventive versatility.  Add flautist  Gareth Lockrane’s cracking Grooveyard Unplugged and the unusual tongue-in-cheek Pigsfoot and I hope there is enough variety and quality to please everyone.

The morning swim awaits you!

Final Splinter Gig – Sunday 26th April 2015

From Zoe Gilby:

"This Sunday sees the last ever Splinter Jazz @ The Bridge performance, and it’s Corey Mwamba and his trio “Yana”.

Splinter has seen some great musicians over the years, but it is time to call it a day. Very poor support from both the public and local musicians, and with the attendances some weeks matching only the number of band members on stage, has resulted in the decision to close. As they say, use it or lose it.
I’m sure that the final gig will be a fantastic evening of jazz and improvisation of the highest quality from some of the best musicians in the UK.

Thanks to the “regulars” who have supported Splinter over the years, without you, Splinter could not have existed at all."

But it is not all bad news - Jazz North East say they will be running monthly gigs at the bridge again in the near future. Thanks to Zoe and Andy for all their hard work in keeping the venue live!

yana

Yana: Corey Mwamba, Dave Kane and Johnny Hunter improvise collectively to create an open, living music.
“Yana” got together in Stratford-upon-Avon on a dark and stormy night in November 2008, and from there have undertaken a Jazz Services national tour; performed at Manchester Jazz Festival; and supported jazz saxophone legend David Murray.
The music is a free-wheeling, spontaneous mixture of styles. This trio has developed a process entirely focussed on creating highly expressive live music that’s full of grooves and sounds composed, but is not; and playing compositions that don’t sound composed at all, but are.
How it all works is not always clear; but the process is always fascinating to hear, and the results can be truly moving.
Their newest studio recording is called don’t overthink it, which has garnered favourable attention in Jazzwise (4 ****), on All About Jazz and in a critics’ chart on The Wire’s website.
Dave Kane plays bass. He’s released a critically-acclaimed album called Eye of the Duck on the Edition Records label; plays with pianist Matthew Bourne and Stephen Davis and has a fantastic duo with the trumpeter Alex Bonney which performed with Ken Vandermark in 2008. Dave is also founder of a creative musicians’ collective in Leeds called LIMA. There’s more info on Dave’s web-site.
Johnny Hunter is a northern UK-based drummer who comes from a background of both the Avant-Garde and the more mainstream Jazz. He has performed or recorded with such esteemed musicians as Benn Clatworthy, Mick Beck, Nat Birchall, Jamil Sheriff, Jamie Taylor, Pete Fairclough, Walt Shaw, Corey Mwamba, Steve Beresford, Graham Clark, Adam Fairhall and Steve Berry to name a few. He is also heavily involved in the Reggae and Dub scene.
Corey Mwamba plays the vibraphone. As well as having made four electro-acoustic albums, Corey is on two albums made by Quantic, two by Nat Birchall, one by Arun Ghosh and one by Ty. He’s worked with lots of people including Mat Maneri and Lucian Ban, The Heliocentrics, Orphy Robinson, Robert Mitchell, Andy Hamilton, Scanner and Tony Kofi.

Stan Roylance RIP

From Dave Lee, for friends of Stan Roylance.

"I am so saddened to have to report the passing of my friend and fellow drummer, Stan Roylance who passed away yesterday (Sunday) whilst in Leeds General Infirmary.

Stan was in hospital having hip replacement surgery which had gone very successfully it seemed but post surgery heart problems led to his passing.

Those of my muso friends will remember Stan as very much the joker and a man who was always very supportive of jazz. Indeed he has been the 'fixer' and drummer for the Cullingworth Jazz Night for many years and has booked countless saxophonists and singers for the regular Wednesday night sessions at Cullingworth Conservative Club.

Before going into hospital for his op' Stan had arranged for me to cover his Cullingworth gigs whilst he was away. I will still be honouring that commitment albeit with great sadness in my heart.

Stan's funeral will be held on Wednesday 29th April at 3.00 pm at the Rawdon Crematorium, Leeds Road, LS19 6JP. Meeting up afterwards, at The Queens Arms, 99 Long Row, Horseforth, Leeds, LS18 5AT.

Stan, may you rest in peace my friend ... but keep on swinging"

Touring and Twinning plans for Norvoljazz

Ingrid Jensen

Norvoljazz network - quarterly meeting at the Sage 11-4-15

The network of northern independent jazz promoters met at the Sage Gateshead, and were welcomed to the Gateshead Jazz Festival by Ros Rigby, the artistic director of the festival.

The network now had 28 promoters involved including seven of the Northern jazz Festivals.  Matt Robinson from Lancaster Jazz Festival and Brian Ebbatson, who with Paul Edis organises lunchtime Jazz at the Gala in Durham and Lit and Phil in Newcastle were the two latest recruits.

The Touring Programme - the network signed off proposals developed by Kim Macari for a touring programme involving US/European starting in Autumn 2016. This had been refocused following discussions with the Arts Council of England. There would be three tours proposed initially. Clubs put forward ideas for touring artists pool that included Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

The network also considered a proposal from Heulwen Phillips, the new project director  of Jazz Services Ltd, for a twinning scheme between established Northern promoters and smaller fledgling clubs to encourage the development of new jazz venues and audiences. Six promoters said they were willing to be involved, with proposals ranging from a new jazz stage at a rock festival, jazz in museums and stately homes, jazz in empty shop premises, and developing a festival using new venue promoters.

It was also agreed that the Norvoljazz network run a seminar “How to be a jazz promoter” at the Lancaster Jazz Festival on Saturday 18 September using some of the expertise we have here, hopefully one of many such events.

More detail from the Sage meeting can be found on http://www.norvoljazz.org/subscribe/

Quayside sendoff at the Central

From Richard Hardy

Some early notification of an All Star line up Thursday 23 April 8.30pm at the Central, Wellington Street Leeds LS1 4LT.

Unfortunately, John Settle our resident drummer is temporarily leaving us for a 6 month stint on the ocean. Therefore, on Thursday John has arranged his own farewell bash and has carefully hand picked this line up for the occasion. Note, it's a six piece (a rare occurrence) led by Rod "The Room Darkener" Mason on sax, guitarist Will Powell will be making his debut here and we have three jazz musos from York in the form of James Lancaster and Paul Baxter (7POS alumni on trumpet and bass respectively) and Chris Moore on keys.

It's going to be a great night. Please pop this one in your diary and do tell all your friends and give John a good send off from the quayside. Free entrance. John will be raffling eggs and wine on the night as usual!

Cheers for now

Jenny and Rev. Ray at Scarborough

 Jenny Bray
  Ray Eveleigh

Jazz pianist Ray Eveleigh has become very much a jazz educator since retiring from the “cloth” in 2002. Having devised a jazz course consisting of ten sessions Ray decided to spend some of his new found free time by joining his Daughter, Jenny Bray, in the USA and teaching his course to several groups whilst over there.

Jenny, a fine pianist, noted vocalist and music teacher, returned from living in the States some ten years ago and teamed up with her Father to teach the course at Burton Agnes Hall. This association gave birth to The Burton Agnes Jazz Festival, which has now become an annual festival of note. The RevRay Quartet performs regularly at the festival and feature popular front-liners such as Frank Brooker and Thom Whitworth.

Wed 22 April will be a showcase of the work Ray and Jenny do and features some of their students. They will be joined by Bob Walker (bass) and Mike Hoggard (drums). www.revraymusic.com

On Thursday 30th April, International Jazz Day comes to Hull for the first time as J-Night presents a special evening of Brazilian Jazz at Hull Truck Theatre featuring Christine Tobin and her band with support from Hull’s own Lyn Acton Bossa Revista.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) designated 30th April as International Jazz Day in 2011, celebrating the role that jazz plays in promoting diversity and intercultural dialogue. Since then, the event has grown into a truly global celebration of jazz, with events this year taking place in over 160 countries. In 2015 International Jazz Day also forms part of the celebrations of UNESCO’s 70th Anniversary.

Hull’s celebrations will transport the audience from Hull Truck Theatre to the smoky jazz clubs of Brazil as Christine Tobin, a favourite with Hull audiences, presents her tribute to the legendary Brazilian jazz singer ElĂs Regina. With support from local favourites Lyn Acton Bossa Revista, there will be a truly Latin American vibe to the evening.

David Porter, Director of J-Night, says: ‘A key focus for our work is celebrating diversity and introducing audiences to artists performing incredible music from a wide range of cultures. As the eyes of the world turn to Hull in the lead up to 2017, it’s fantastic to be linking in with promoters and artists from across the world to celebrate International Jazz Day.’

Tickets for the show, priced at £15 (£6 for students and under-26s) are available from Hull Truck Theatre at www.hulltruck.co.uk or on 01482 323638.

Ben Cox at The Cinammon

Friday April 17th The launch of "This Waiting Game" by The Ben Cox Band

Already picked out by Scarborough and Cheltenham Jazz festivals for 2015 performances, you get the chance to see the gig that launches the album live in The North on April 17th at The Cinnamon Club

Whilst performing on London’s live circuit, Cox attracted the attention of UK jazz vocal legend Ian Shaw, who recognised his huge potential, establishing a role as a mentor and producing his album, enhancing what was already a great new talent. The result is This Waiting Game, an exceptional album with an inclusive vibe, destined to by enjoyed by both the avid jazz fan and those who simply love to be entertained by great music. Guest slots from renowned jazz talent such as Kirk McElhinney, Claire Martin and Emily Dankworth also serve to augment what is already an enchanting and charismatic body of work.

Cox’s mesmerising tone and captivating delivery have won him a whole host of high profile fans, including a glowing endorsement from jazz superstar Jamie Cullum. Introducing This Waiting Game as “fresh new vocal jazz music” on his hugely popular BBC Radio 2 show, Cullum states: “The title track ‘This Waiting Game’ sounds really good, Ben has got a very precise voice, it recalls a little bit of Kurt Elling to me, certainly in the writing style of the music and I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album”

"Ben Cox possesses a voice drenched in soul and swing, that sounds like nobody else. He is a cracking songwriter and collaborator, A true talent" – Ian Shaw

“Ben Cox owns a stunning capacity to live through each song with a rich tone and beautifully honest heart. Jamie Safiruddin plays with such an exciting and generous style. . I think we may have found the best new jazz talent to emerge from the UK. Highly recommended” – Liane Carroll

John Ellis at Southport

From Geoff Matthews

The SMJ gig for April is on Sunday 19th at The Royal Clifton Hotel Southport PR8 1RB. We are delighted to welcome for the first time The John Ellis Trio.

John piano/voice – Pete Turner bass – Rob Turner drums.

John’s varied and colourful musical career has included collaboration with pop stars (including Tom Jones and John Squire), film and stage play score composition and big band arranging.

We picked his trio for its extreme musicality, originality and fine improvisational flair.  John combines this with a highly entertaining style, expressive voice and a very meaningful interpretation of the his lyrics. He also finds time to run his own Limefield recording studio in Manchester.

This quirky image of John up to his knees in his local River Irk was posed for a CD cover.

The gig starts at 8 pm (doors 7.30) – tickets £14/club members £12 – Ring 01704 541790 to book.
