During May we'll have two contrasting big bands with the Jazz Orchestras of Ronnie Bottomley (Sun 10 May 1.30pm) and James Hamilton (Sun May 31 1.30pm). We also have four groups from the latest crop of musicians from Leeds College of Music, including the inspirational (and very rare!) five piece trombone band "Slide Area". We also have the good humoured vocals of Kate Peters and her all star septet. Oh, and the wonderful Darius Brubeck Quartet featuring saxman Dave O’Higgins....

The second of Seven Jazz Leeds showcases from the current crop of LCM student musicians features three bands:
Alistair Adair Quintet Alistair Adair on alto, Dylan Owen on Tenor, Chris Bland on keys, Tamo Harewood on Bass, Ollie Goss on Drums. A band set to challenge themselves with influences like David Binney, Stefano Di Battista, Brian Blade, and Rosario Giuliani .
Hamstead/Cliffe Quintet Sam Hamstead - Tenor Sax, Matt Cliffe - Alto Sax, Joe Simmons - Guitar, Elliot Roffe - Bass, Simon Henry – Drums. Tutored by Saxophonist Rob Mitchell playing classic and modern hard bop from Art Blakey to Eric Alexander.

Ron says – “As usual, I've done a whole concert of arrangements that we've never played before with, perhaps two exceptions - and those have never been played at Seven Arts”. The godfather of the Leeds Big Band scene – the band will rock Seven Arts to the rafters!

Led by trombonist Kev Holbrough, Leeds College of Music's "Slide Area" is an exciting five trombone and rhythm section band featuring up and coming jazz trombonists Dan Barley, Tom Smith, Peter New and Patrick Martin. Supported by equally outstanding rhythm section comprising of Jonny Thornton on drums, Roz Macdonald on Bass and Chris Bland on piano.
Sun afternoon May 24 Kate Peters Septet @SevenArts 1.30 -4pm. £7/5
This is a collection of some of the finest young jazz musicians in the country, fronted by an exceptional and versatile vocalist Kate Peters. This exciting line-up features Matt Anderson on tenor sax, Ian Chalk on trumpet, Martin Longhawn on piano, John Marley on bass and Tim Carter on drums.
Sun afternoon May 31 James Hamilton Jazz Orchestra “Covers Suite”@Seven Arts 1.30 -5pm £10/8
During 2015 composer James Hamilton has been working alongside some of the stand out vocalists of the Leeds popular music scene to produce a series of special arrangements of popular songs to be performed by his jazz orchestra. The artists performing are Simon Wainwright (Hope and Social); Simon Fletcher (Hand Made Hands);David Henshaw (Dancing Years);Jasmine Kennedy;Dan Lucas (Boss Caine);Sam Thornton (Louis Louis Louis, King Zepha); Grant Fennell (Cotton Woolf). The gig will feature some of James' original compositions for his Jazz Orchestra including the 2014 commissioned "Yorkshire Suite".
Workshops and choir
What else? Well the Jazz Voices Choir start their summer term, tutored by Tessa Smith and meet at Inkwell 7-9pm on Mon May 11 and Mon 25th. The instrumental workshop meets at Seven Arts on Sat 9 May between 2-4pm and Sat 23 May 2-4pm. Dom Moore's improvisation group runs on fortnightly on Tuesday and Friday evenings over in Meanwood 7.30-10pm.
