Six-In-A Bar at Hornby

Sam Ashton writes

"On Friday June 19th Jazz in Hornby will host a return visit of Mike Lovell`s Six-In-A Bar; Dixieland jazz at it`s finest. Nothing corny about this band, every member a seasoned, youthful- looking veteran, very inventive and swinging soloists, and tight in the ensembles. The repertoire consists mostly of songs from the twenties and thirties. Mike Lovell leads on trombone: Willy Entwistle, reeds, violin and flageolet; Andy Henderson, cornet, flugel horn and vocals; Colin Turner, bass sax and Bb tuba; Chris Howse, banjo, guitar, vocals; and Pete Eddowes, percussion, washboard, and other sundry pots and pans.

These kids can really knock the jug.

Venue: the Village Institute, Main Street, (A683) Hornby, Lancs,LA2 8JR. Doors and bar open at 7.30, music from 8 p.m. Tickets, £10, on the door or ring 015242 22227"

Cleethorpes Jazz Festival beckons...

 Dave Newton

The widely acclaimed “Wonderful, musically enthralling …” Cleethorpes Jazz Festival takes place at the venue so successful last year, McCormack’s Bar at Pleasure Island, on King’s Road, Cleethorpes DN35 8HP 26-28th June 2015

Food, drink, and ambiance will be there aplenty to accompany yet another wonderful and varied programme of truly top line performers.

As usual the varied programme ranges from focussed groups offering Gypsy Jazz, Blues Bessie Smith style, or a jazz take on music from the movies.  There are small, tight, well rehearsed units to larger groups of musicians drawn together for the express purpose of enthralling this festival.

Friday evening has the Sarah Gillespie Quartet interpreting the great Bessie Smith, followed by bassist Andy Cleyndert’s percussionless quartet and Dave Newton’s Big Screen trio.

Saturday afternoon sees Manchester’s John Ellis Trio who take improvisatory twists and turns through township, soulful songs and local folk heritage. They are followed by the Jazz Worriers, recent and popular visitors to Grimsby Jazz with their exciting blend of scintillating jazz and beguiling Scouse-style humour. The afternoon session finishes with the ever popular Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, who always amaze with the maturity and strength of their sound, further enhanced by guest trombonist Dennis Rollins.

Saturday evening opens with the exciting Gypsy Jazz of Ultraswing featuring guitarist and rising star Remi Harris. Then local favourite Pat McCarthy’s quartet featuring the highly rated pianist John Horler, A big finish to the evening is assured with Anita Wardell singing Johnny Mandel with the Alan Barnes Septet. The remarkably talented Alan has arranged some of Mandel’s many memorable tunes for septet, including M.A.S.H., The Shadow of your Smile and Emily.

Sunday opens early 11.45 am with a half hour of developing local talent – members of the Franklin College youth jazz band, under the direction of Barry Whitfield. At 12.45 expect infectiously swinging straight ahead jazz, with tenor saxophonist Dave O’Higgins with his quartet.  Alan Barnes comes next, on clarinet this time, playing alongside accordionist Karen Street, and then something even more different, Namvula fusing urban Zambian music, Scottish music and the eclectic fringe of London’s music scene.

Sunday evening begins with John Horler, who returns to the stage with his trio, featuring Alec Dankworth on bass and the locally popular Winston Clifford on drums and vocals.

And then the big finish. To close the festival another major ensemble of talent,  five saxes – Alan Barnes, Robert Fowler, Sammy Mayne, Dave O’Higgins, Judith O’Higgins – with Robin Aspland, piano, Alec Dankworth on bass and drummer Steve Brown.  A mighty way to bring the curtain down on what looks set to be a memorable weekend of jazz.

Pre-festival freebies on Friday  include a not to be missed solo piano session from Dave Newton, who will play at the Music While You Eat Lunchtime concert at St Peter’s Church at 12 noon.  Arrive early if you want to be sure of picking up sandwiches and/or a drink! Later (5pm) at the same venue the North East Lincs Music HUB Phase Two Jazz Orchestra will be tackling some complex arrangements.

Reduced price early bird tickets will be available until the end of May so its time to sign up.  The full weekend discounted price this year is £75 – full price after 1 June will be £85. Individual sessions £27 for each evening, £21 Saturday or Sunday afternoon.  Full day for Saturday or Sunday £36.

Fusebox Switches Back On

Lume on tour - "Entropi"

Bill Chatwin writes

After a much delayed start to this years season, due to the sad passing of Dave Hatfield, Fusebox is excited to announce that we are keeping our promise to Dave and that we have a full programme for the rest of this year. It begins on;

Friday May 29th with the LUME Tour’s great double bill, featuring  Dee Byrne’s Entropi and Cath Robert’s Quadraceratops at the Fox and Newt.

On Wednesday 17th June we welcome Alan Wilkinson’s Akode, also at the Fox and Newt.

Friday 3rd of July brings a Geordi power trio, Taupe to the Fox and Newt.

After the usual August break on Friday 18th September we offer an exciting new quartet fronted by Dave Kane – The Rabbit Project, again at the Fox and Newt.

On Thursday 1st October we move venue to Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton to welcome back Engine Room Favourites.

Wednesday 18th November and we are delighted to have a return visit of the collaboration of Laura Cole’s Metamorphic and the beautiful Nordic trio, Royst. Because of the size of the ensemble this will also be at Seven Arts.

On Thursday November 26th Loz Speyer’s Inner Space Music will play for us at the Fox and Newt.

To round off the year, in December we are planning a Fusebox Christmas Special to celebrate the good times that we had with Dave Hatfield. Date, venue and time tbd.

Fusebox regulars will know that our main venue is The Fox and Newt, with occasional forays to Seven Arts and that we always tried to keep Friday nights for our gigs but with the late start in putting the programme together we would hope that the slight variations in day and venue will not stop you supporting us and coming to hear some fantastic music.  We look forward to your company for the rest of the year.

We have decided to maintain our prices at £8/£6.

All of the gigs will have a support band and you can find out a lot more detail, bios etc on our website at;

A jazz promoter tells it like it is...

Spike Wilner interviewed about running Smalls jazz club in New York. Lots of strong views...

on jazz education : "If you want to learn how to play jazz then get some jazz records, copy solos, come out to the jam sessions and play, go to live clubs and meet jazz musicians. That’s all you need"

on getting gigs: "I don’t like it when people call me everyday asking “when are you going to listen to my CD?”. That’s not the way it works. What I like to see is young guys come in and hang out, sit in and if they’re good, people notice."

on improvisation: "I don’t believe that improvised music is jazz. Improvisation is in all music and you can improvise anyway you like. Jazz is not only about improvisation. Jazz is a tradition, it’s a feeling, just the way any music has a feeling"

on being a jazz musician: "You have to understand that you’re an artist. An artist is someone who is devoted to the art for the sake of the art. It means day to day work, investigation to yourself, your taste, your personality. Study, work, study, work with no idea of making money, no idea of reward. The reward is the work.... Art is a spiritual journey. Art is about self discovery, rigorous discipline. I believe that musicians need to embrace that especially with jazz. It’s a spiritual music."

Do you agree?

Summer at the Spa!

Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell

Summer Jazz in Boston Spa....

May 16th – Kevin Grenfell’s Jazz Giants – another truly professional group. The irrepressible Kevin on trombone ably supported by two outstanding reeds players – our own John Hallam and Paul Harrison from Denmark. Then add Simon Banks on piano and Graham Smith on drums. A lively evening is forecast. £10

May 23rd – Fryer-Barnhart International Jazz Band - yes, here at last we have Jeff and Jim with the International Jazz Band including such luminaries as George Huxley on reeds and Gordon Whitworth on trumpet. No need to ramble on – just claim your seat early for what will be one of the highlights of the year. £10

May 24th – Jeff and Anne Barnhart as Ivory & Gold, St Mary’s Church, Boston Spa. 10.30am

May 30th – Chicago Teddy Bears – and rounding off the month in style, none better than the “Teds” with a rip roaring session of traditional jazz favourites and fun plus the added bonus of John Hallam on reeds.

Jun 6th – John Burgess/Roy Williams Quintet – something a little more subtle – combining a renowned reeds player and old friend John B. from Edinburgh with the talented and mellifluous Roy Williams on trombone plus a first class rhythm section. Superb sounds from across the melodic musical spectrum. £10

Jun 13th – Tame Valley Stompers – otherwise known as Terry’s Dead Good Boys. A warm welcome to regular visitors from across the Pennines. One of our most respected trombone players leads this group dedicated to unabashed traditional jazz with a sense of humour. Terry’s rendition of Ory’s Creole Trombone is guaranteed to bring the house down!

Jun 20th – Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell – without doubt, the group most requested by our Boston Spa audience Led by maestro “Spats” Langham on guitar/banjo, the music is described as “vintage acoustic swing music” - the red hot jazz of 1920’s New York. To use the hackneyed expression, this is a truly “class act” – the more so with the addition of Emily Campbell – the classically trained vocalist who draws her inspiration from Ella and Peggy Lee. £10

Jun 27th – Washington Whirligig – formed in 2012, a first visit by a group from South Yorkshire which has quickly gained a reputation for exciting traditional jazz in the swinging Chicago style of Condon and Alex Welsh interspersed with New Orleans sounds, swing and the blues.

Jazz at the Spa is at the Village Hall High Street Boston Spa, Leeds LS23 6AA

Situated just off the new section of the A1(M) at Junction 45 signed Wetherby and Otley.

From Mark Beirne-Smith

This year the Ilkley Jazz Festival runs Fri 21-23 Aug

Main acts so far - Jacqui Dankworth on 21st, Beverley Beirne, Esther Bennett and Duncan Lamont on 22 August.

We are making in roads into getting the Ilkley Jazz Festival off the ground and we are hoping to get some funding for our free community events from Aviva.

We stand a good chance as we only need to be in the top 200 out of 650, however we do need people to vote for us, it takes about 10 mins here:

https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/3302/

There is more about what we are doing on our web site including the free events and early bird tickets for £30

Obviously any help in promoting the festival would be much appreciated too

Thanks

Jazz North are set to appoint new Executive Director. What do you think? Do post any comments below...

"Dear Jazz Colleague,

Exciting times for Jazz North as we enter the next stage of our development. In April we joined Arts Council England’s portfolio of national arts organisations. This means we have the security of funding support over the next three years – and the opportunity to grow and strengthen the organisation and deliver an ambitious five year business plan.

This means that we are now recruiting for a new position of Executive Director. The Executive Director will join the Creative Director team of Nigel Slee and Steve Mead, and take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of Jazz North’s fundraising, business development, finances, communications, HR, organisational management and legal compliance.

Job advert as advertised in The Guardian, Arts Jobs and Arts Professional below.

Obviously we’d like to find the right person and the job spec is a tall order! We’d be grateful if you could share this news through your networks or pass on to anyone who you think might be interested in this new role.

Any further questions please contact my colleague Lucy Woolley lucy@jazznorth.org
