BBC Young Musicians Final 2016, Jazz Awards

The BBC have announced their five finalists in the BBC Young Musicians Final 2016.

With an age range of 15-21, the 2016 finalists include two sibling competitors, Alexandra Ridout (on trumpet) and her brother Tom (on sax and recorder). Saxophonist Tom Smith returns, after being a finalist at the 2014 inaugural even, and there are two pianists, the oldest competitor Elliott Sansom (21) and the youngest, Noah Stoneman (15).

The final will take place on 12 March at the Royal Welsh College of Music’s Dora Stoutzker Hall in Cardiff.

Saxophonist Alexander Bone, the winner of the first competition in 2014, will be performing at the final. Bone is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music and he performed at the BBC Proms in the Park last September.

The five finalists will be accompanied by the Gwilym Simcock Trio. Simcock was the first jazz musician to take part in the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme (2006-08). He will also be mentoring the finalists as they rehearse.

This will be one of those very special musical nights that is not to be missed.  Scarborough Jazz @ The Cask is delighted to present The Steve Fishwick/Osian Roberts/Frank Basile Sextet, an exciting UK/USA collaboration.

 This will be part of the band’s third UK tour and is in promotion of their second CD ‘In The Empire State’ which was recorded last September in New York City.  As well as Frank Basile, one of the best baritone saxophonists in the world today, the line up boasts two more of NYCs best jazz musicians, pianist Jeb Patton and bassist Mike Karn who's combined list of credits reads like a who's who of jazz.

 Completing the line up will be long standing collaborators and leading UK jazz musicians Steve Fishwick and Osian Roberts, on Trumpet and Tenor respectively, and Matt Fishwick on drums, himself a one time NYC resident between 2005 and 2010 and presently one of the most in demand jazz drummers in the UK.  Expect hard swinging originals and standards rooted in 1950s/60s Hard Bop and beyond!

GoGo Penguin at the Sage

Manchester-based trio GoGo Penguin draw on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, John Cage, Massive Attack and Aphex Twin to Manchester’s grey rain-streaked urban streets to create a brave new sound all their own.

Their trademark mash-up of minimalist piano themes, deeply propulsive bass lines and electronica-inspired drums has seen them shortlisted for the Mercury Prize Album 2014 and hailed as the most exciting new band to emerge from the UK in years.

The trio were recently signed to Blue Note Records and their new album, Man Made Object, is released 5 February.

First the first time ever the B-Side at LCoM has moved to Sela Bar featuring the incredible flautist Gareth Lockrane and LCoM's own 'allcaps'.

Gareth Lockrane: 
Gareth Lockrane started playing at the age of 10 and after raiding his dad's record collection discovered jazz at 14. Early influences included Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Bill Evans and Stan Getz on the jazz side whilst also being transfixed by the great blues-rock guitarists of the 60s and 70s as a child - Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy continue to be major influences. On flute the initial main inspirations were saxophone "doublers" like Frank Wess, James Clay, Roland Kirk, Bobby Jaspar and James Moody and later on he fell under the spell of flute visionaries like Jeremy Steig, Eric Dolphy, Hubert Laws, Paul Horn, Eddie Parker and James Newton amongst many others.

In 1994 he enrolled on the jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music in London where teachers included Stan Sulzmann, Hugh Fraser, Mark Lockheart and Eddie Parker and where he struck up musical relationships with fellow students the Fishwick brothers, Osian Roberts, Orlando le Fleming and many others.

Manchester Jazz Festival dates announced

Manchester’s longest-running music festival comes of age in 2016 as the 21st mjf delivers 10 music-filled days from 22-31 July in iconic venues across the city once again. Highlights will include the Irwin Mitchell mjf originals commission premièring a new work from one of the NW’s leading composer/bandleaders, the phenomenal free northern line showcase on Monday 25 July and plans are afoot for some special events to mark the EuroScience Open Forum – science & jazz!

Family Band at Heart

Led by double bassist Tom Riviere, Family Band is a chordless quartet dedicated to a love of improvisation and loose structures. Influenced by the music of Ornette Coleman, Paul Motian and John Coltrane among others, the band are not afraid to stretch themselves and take risks. This is music created to make you feel. The Graeme Wilson Quartet have built a reputation for electrifying performances around the North East for over two years. It's a week of varied music at the Globe in Newcastle 

On Thursday 28 January local guitar genius Mark Williams brings his Trio to the Globe for a night of superb original jazz, funk and fusion.

On Saturday 30 January the Globe will be grooving to the two-tone beat of mod/ska band The Style Selektors.

On Sunday 31 January our vintage jazz programme continues with a welcome return of the Vieux Carré Jazzmen.

And on this, and every, Wednesday the North East's longest running jazz jam session Take it to the Bridge welcomes all comers.

Learning opportunities for vocalists (and accompanists)

Our next Play Jazz! workshop at Sage Gateshead will be of special interest to vocalists and other musicians who work with them.

Singing away the Winter Blues on Saturday 6 February is facilitated by international star Zoe Gilby (vocalist) and Alan Law (piano).

Looking ahead, we have a very special weekend course for vocalists led by Anita Wardell on 13 to 15 May. Last year this course was sold out months in advance, so if you are interested you are advised to book soon.

Here's the choice of Steve Mead from Manchester Jazz Festival of his highlights of the jazz year 2015

1. Experiencing the wonderful music of French trumpeter Airelle Besson with her quartet live at Jazz Sous les Pommiers in Coutances back in May. I’d been following the band’s formative stages over the past year or so and this performance really encapsulated Airelle’s highly personal vision for the music.
2. Our northern colleagues Marsden Jazz Festival presented a great mix of New Stream bands back in October, and I especially enjoyed vocalist Lauren Kinsella’s suite of new word settings commissioned by the festival ‘What Window Do You Look Out Of?’ – the audience were transfixed by her remarkable talent.
3. And mjf reaching its 20th birthday was something of a memorable jazz moment for the mjf team…

Possibly only Jazz North East could be adventurous or mad enough (probably both) to fly in six musicians from Paris, link them up with UK wild men Andy Champion and Corey Mwamba, and present them in an all-day, eight band extravaganza. In fact even French promoters might think twice about such a crazy idea.

But this is exactly what JNE (now in their 50th year, and growing old disgracefully) have done, with five well established French bands, one - Sonsale - previously created under the Anglo-French Jazz-Shuttle scheme, and two combinations put together especially for the day (and thus never to be repeated). Cheaper than a trip to France, and you don't need a passport. Magnifique!

We also have an alteration to our future gig on Thurs 25 Feb 2016 the Nicola Farnon Trio were due to appear however Nicola has once again secured a tour with Dolly Partons Tribute Band and will now appear later in the year and we now present 'Frank Brookers Happy Chappies' on that date.

Good news from Corey Mwamba

A new arts organisation will be presenting a new programme of innovative, modern creative music in Derby, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Out Front! will host artists in an adventurous series that highlights styles such as jazz-funk and totally improvised music. The wider aim of Out Front! to make Derby a prime destination for innovative musicians and composers to perform, create and collaborate. The new programme starts in March and includes monthly gigs around the city; and a mini-festival in the autumn.

Out Front! is a Derby-based voluntary arts organisation that aims to help develop and support a holistic and complete scene for lovers of experimental, modern creative and improvised music in Derby and the Midlands. The group was formed by Derby musician and music programmer Corey Mwamba; and is made up of Claire Furlong (NYJO Learning and Participation, London), George Grignon (musician, Derby), William McGiven (DJ, Derby), Cath Roberts (musician, London), Ian Perry (music programmer, Nottingham) and Walt Shaw (artist/musician, Derby).

Lead administrator Corey Mwamba said "The funding from Arts Council England will enable us to create a fantastic series of events here; and work with others, to strengthen the music and arts scene in Derby. We're looking forward to hosting innovative jazz and improvised music groups who haven't had the chances to perform in the area, as well as national and international acts. It's very exciting news and we hope to have more involvement and support from people in Derby and the wider Midlands."

Manchester's Band on the Wall secures funding for expansion

Inner City Music, the charity that owns and operates Band on the Wall, in Manchester (a good friend and home to some fantastic jazz over the years) has won a bid for funding from the Arts Council England which could see it increase its capacity by 35 per cent to 500 people.

The venue owners said the project will also provide more learning and participation facilities for its education and charitable activities delivered through its partner charity Brighter Sound.

Inner City Music made a first stage capital bid application to Arts Council England and will now work on detailed plans for the estimated £2.5m project, for which they have been invited to submit in a stage two application within the next 18 months.

Gavin Sharp. CEO, Inner City Music said: “While we have a long way to go to secure the extension of Band on the Wall, this first stage of funding is crucial to allow us to develop our plans and we are very grateful to Arts Council England for its support.

“For the last six years we have successfully operated one of the UK’s oldest and most iconic small venues, maintaining our mission to present and showcase the best music from across the globe, with a clear focus on excellence. Our award winning programme is regularly held up as an example, as are our incredibly high production values.

John Taylor was an inspirational pianist, composer and musician who worked alongside some of the greatest jazz stars on the concert platform and in the recording studio in addition to his solo career.  Following his sudden death on 17 July last year we celebrate his extraordinary talent and the influence that he had on two generations of musicians.

John joined the Department of Music at York University as a lecturer in 2005 and continued to give masterclasses and recitals both there and at the NCEM.  Julian Argüelles, a close collaborator and friend, leads this concert with Steve Watts and former students of John who are now professional musicians.

‘Taylor’s playing was virtuosic but never overwrought, combining a melodic lyricism with rhythmic originality and drawing influences from classical music. He was regarded by connoisseurs as one of the most creative and technically brilliant pianists in jazz.’ Daily Telegraph

Liverpool International Jazz Festival gears up

The fourth Liverpool International Jazz Festival is set to take place at The Capstone Theatre from 25th – 28th Feb 2016.

This time the line-up will include ticketed concerts from French percussionist/composer Pascal Schumacher, Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine and British saxophone legends Courtney Pine and Andy Sheppard. Alongside these concerts there will be free admission sets from some of the best artists and bands from the North West, including bands from Jazz North’s Northern Line rostra and Merseyside based groups being showcased by LiverpoolJazz. Add to this a free Milapfest concert by sarod player Sudeshna Bhattacharya, and various workshops and other events yet to be announced, next year’s Festival is looking to be as varied and entertaining as ever.

LIJF was established in 2013 by Liverpool Hope University, based at the University’s Capstone Theatre at its Creative Campus (17 Shaw Street, Liverpool L6 1HP). The musical emphasis of LIJF is on cutting edge jazz, creativity and innovation in music-making but also on widening accessibility of jazz related music to general music audiences. The forthcoming 2016 Festival is no exception to this ethos.

Big Jazz names at Liverpool St Georges Hall

Liverpool’s St George’s Hall has announced its most dynamic Concert Room programme in recent years, top artists on the UK and international touring circuit are booked in to the magnificent Concert Room – the eclectic programme covers a wide variety of music genres, comedy, cabaret and the spoken word.

The magnificent Concert Room is the jewel in the crown of the iconic St George’s Hall on Lime Street. Charles Dickens himself gave many readings on the stage and considered it a perfect venue. It was originally designed by Charles Robert Cockerell to accommodate an orchestra and provides excellent acoustics, the beautiful neo-classical interior is the perfect backdrop to any live performance artist.

Jazz is high on the agenda especially in March with Barb Jungr performing her new album Shelter From The Storm featuring Laurence Hobgood. Double MOBO Award Winning Saxophonist Yolande Brown, British jazz diva Jacqui Dankworth with American vocalist/pianist Charlie Wood and one of the greatest Jazz vocalists Ian Shaw.

Emily is a classically trained musician who found jazz when she moved to Leeds in 1992.She has been singing with a trio on and off for about 10 years now – with short breaks over the past 5 years busy having 3 boys. Emily practices medicine in Otley and has at times applied her full skill-set to the typical jazz audience. Emily Brown – v, (ecg??) "Happy New Year everyone from Fusebox. Our Spring/Summer Programme begins officially at the end of January (more on that soon) but we have a surprise gig, this Saturday 9th January at the Fox and Newt, Leeds.

A new collective band MOLE are in Leeds this week, writing and recording and have decided to premier their new material for Fusebox.

MOLE is a brand new Anglo/Irish/Norwegian collaboration between the LIMA-compadres Christophe de Bezenac (saxophones), Petter Frost Fadnes (saxophones), Dave Kane (bass) and Paul Hession (kit). MOLE represents the unexpected, the uncanny, the ambiguous, and searches the dark undercurrents of sonic possibilities in their pursuit of righteousness, peace and good music. MOLE refutes categorisation at all costs, infiltrating musical genres through sheer discretion and wit.
So, if you are suffering with the post Christmas, New Year blues then come and be uplifted with MOLE and be among the first to hear their new work.

The indomitable, Chris Sharkey, will be providing support with a solo set.

2015 highlights from Ros Rigby...

Langston Hughes Project

"Here you go in chronological order:

Seminar held at Jazzahead in Bremen last April where Italian academic  and jazz  polymath Francesco Martinelli presented the work underway on THE SHARED ROOTS OF EUROPEAN JAZZ - the first comprehensive publication on the history of jazz in Europe – one of Europe Jazz Network’s major activities funded by the European Union but a long term ambition of Francesco’s – it will be a major resource for everyone interested in jazz worldwide. This was the first time I had really got a sense of what an exciting project this will be.

Marcus Miller at Sage Gateshead in November- fantastic player, producer, and stage presence- a pleasure to present in our venue.

The Langston Hughes Project at the EFG London Jazz Festival also in November – with rapper Ice-T  and trumpeter/MD Ron McCurdy and band  – a  unique tribute to the ‘jazz poet’ and major figure of the Harlem Renaissance- a really well constructed and musically excellent  event – would love to bring it to the region one day.

Am well aware I will have missed many wonderful events at clubs and venues across the North in this period- not enough nights in the week!
