Categories are - Jazz Album of the Year, Jazz Vocalist of the Year, Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year, Jazz Ensemble of the Year, Jazz Venue of the Year, Jazz Media Award; Jazz Education Award; Jazz Newcomer of the Year and Services to Jazz Award The awards are organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group, co-chaired by Jason McCartney MP and Lord Colwyn. OK - this is a bit of unashamed lobbying. This year is the 50th anniversary of Tyneside promoters Jazz North East, making them the longest running jazz promotions organisation anywhere in the UK (quite possibly anywhere in Europe). They must also be amongst the most adventurous, covering the field from straightahead bop to outrageous free improv, and with unparalleled international links that saw them present musicians from 14 different countries last year alone. But they don't neglect the Northern scene, with bands from across the region getting regular bookings.
ReplyDeleteIf we all just vote for our local clubs or promoters 'Venue of the Year' category of the APPJAG awards, it's unlikely that any of us will actually win. So how about putting local interests aside and all getting behind JNE in this, their semicentennial year? You could all come to the celebration party!
