Come along to our yearly celebration of the best of Wigan jazz, which for those of you who are still unaware means our wonderful, home grown, youth jazz orchestras.

These are the youngest band, the intermediate, and the oldest and most experienced. If you have never seen the youth bands of Wigan you will be astonished by the quality of the music. Jazz at the Lescar festive programme

Helena Kay Trio 9 January 

We've got everything from the energetic grooves of Vipertime at the Lescar helping us into the festive season, classic vocals and the music of Thelonious Monk from Aaron Casserly Stewart, and guitarist Jiannis Pavlidis tearing things up with a classic guitar/organ/drums line-up. Asaf Sirkis and Sylwia Bialas present something utterly beautiful and unique in December, Johnny Hunter's quartet return with further explorations of the outer reaches in January, and we have two acclaimed sax players; Helena Kay with her trio, and Jon Shenoy, in duet with guitarist Sam Dunn.

Something really different, atmospheric and incredibly beautiful; a brand new collaboration between drummer Asaf Sirkis,  and extraordinary Polish singer, Sylwia Bialas bringing improvisation together with folk music, jazz, south Indian, and groove influences, and mixed with a wide pallet of different and rare instruments sounds

Wednesday 19th December 2018: Vipertime 
With Ben Powling (Mansion of Snakes, World Service Project) - Saxophone, Matías Reed - Bass, Charlie Grimwood - Drums, Patrick Morgan - Drums. Vipertime featured recently on Gilles Peterson’s recent BBC Radio 6 UK jazz special, and look set to make a big impression in 2019.

A really special start to 2019 with a tenor sax player that we’ve been looking forward to presenting for some time, a musician with an incredible sound and brimming with energy and rich melodic ideas, Helena Kay (winner Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2015, Peter Whittingham Award 2017), is joined by a great trio featuring Fergus Ireland (double bass) and David Ingamells (drums).

We’re delighted to welcome to The Lescar a great singer with a wonderful voice, Aaron Casserly Stewart. Originally from the US, and former singer with the three time Grammy Award-winning the Sounds of Blackness, Aaron has made Sheffield his home, and for this gig he will be paying a very personal tribute to the music of the great jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk,

Eirik Svela's tour of the Northern jazz venues this week

Eirik Svela is establishing himself as an important voice amongst a new generation of jazz musicians in Scandinavia. In March 2018 he recorded his debut album "Bitds and Pieces" in New York with the internationally acclaimed organ player Sam Yahel (Joshua Redman, Norah Jones) and in November he will be touring in England with his band Eirik Svela Group. The UK edition features some great musicians including Jamil Sheriff (piano), and Andrew Robb (bass). They are also bringing Magnus Eide, an up and coming Norwegian drummer with a fast-growing reputation.

The Eirik Svela Group has grown out of the environment around the Norwegian Academy of Music. The group performs mainly music written by band leader Eirik Svela, which focuses on combining pretty melodies and complicated chords in an effortless way.

His northern tour takes in dates in Liverpool (Parr Jazz Tues 20 November) Sheffield (The Lescar 21 November) Bradford (JATP Friday 23 November), Ambleside (Zefferelli's 24 November) Leeds (Seven Arts, afternoon 25 November) and Manchester (Whisky Jar Mon 26 November)

Frank Flynn and CDF trio @Hornby

This coming Saturday, 24th November we will be host to the Frank Flynn CDF# trio: Chris Hodder, guitar and bass guitar; Dave Minshull, drums & percussion, and Frank Flynn on keyboard, and who leads this band, although he claims not to. Any way the music will be just great; I wouldn`t want you to miss it.

Influences for the group come from such artists as Weather Report, Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, David Bowie, The Yellow Jackets, Michel Camilo, Hiromi, Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson, Ravel, Mozart etc plus a generous helping of quirkiness.

Jazz North Northern Line showcase @Lancaster Jazz Festival

Jazz North’s northern line showcase is moving on to its next destination, Lancaster Jazz Festival. Running from 11th to 15th September 2019, the Festival will be hosting the showcase on Friday 13th September, which will see all the bands on Jazz North’s northern line Round Seven roster perform.

Matt Robinson, Lancaster Jazz Festival Artistic Director says: “We’re excited to be working with Jazz North in the staging of a great event that never fails to highlight the exceptional music and talent residing in the north. Hosting the northern line roster is a unique opportunity and we’re looking forward to working with the northern line artists to create a showcase day that actively supports artists and their development - as well as being a stand-out event for audiences, visiting promoters, and the city of Lancaster.”

The showcase is a key element of Jazz North’s northern line which, since its launch in 2013, has kickstarted the careers of 68 jazz artists and ensembles from across the North of England. “Jazz North has an ambitious plan to take the showcase on a journey around northern jazz festivals,” explains Jazz North’s Creative Director, Nigel Slee. “And we are looking forward to working with Lancaster Jazz Festival to continue its legacy of providing a great platform and development opportunities for northern jazz musicians.”

Estonian Gypsy Jazz Band Titoks at Wharf Chambers Leeds

The Estonian Embassy in London are promoting three concerts by virtuoso Estonian gypsy-jazz trio Titoks, including one date Thus 7 November in Leeds.  The trio (Kristjan Rudanovski on violin, Jaanis Kill on guitar and Robert Nõmmann on the double bass) will be presenting music from their newly released album “When Day Is Done”.

The title for this event, "Last Night Has Given Me Something to Think About" refers to poet Marianne Moore’s reflections on Billie Holiday’s June 1941 performance at MoMA Art Gallery, New York. Moore described Holiday’s performance as a work of art, detailing Holiday’s “flame-coloured skirt” and how the performance had given her “something to think about for fifteen years!”

Holiday’s performance was part of the socialite and philanthropist Louise Crane’s “Coffee Concerts” series. Featuring Jazz luminaries including pianist Mary Lou Williams, singer Maxine Sullivan - and of course Holiday herself- the concerts saw live performances against a backdrop of visual art, in a Gallery housing some of the greats of 20th century art.. The “Concerts” drew New York’s celeberati, including figures such as the celebrated poets Elizabeth Bishop (Louise Crane’s partner) and (Crane’s close friend) Marianne Moore.

In homage to Holiday’s MoMA performance, Rommi Smith, poet, playwright and performer, leads a spoken-word performance tour of Leeds Art Gallery. This performance features the premiere of Smith’s brand-new poem in celebration of Holiday’s performance, researched and written during a recent stay in New York. In collaboration with bassist Ken Higgins, pianist Dave Evans and with theatre-director, Jason Hird, Smith invites us to consider the intersection of works of art: leading the audience through the different spaces of the Leeds galleries, halting at various paintings and sculptures to explore how spoken word and music might animate seeing a Gallery’s visual art in new and exciting ways.

The evening begins with a gathering of audience and performers in the Gallery’s Lecture Theatre and ends there with a follow-up discussion session.

Sat 1st December – Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell – one of our most requested groups led by the UK’s finest exponent of the guitar and banjo – “Spats Langham”. On this occasion, the music is described as the “red hot jazz” of 1920’s New York. Without question, it’s a truly class act – the more so with the delightful Emily – a classically trained and superb vocalist who claims to draw her inspiration from Ella and Peggy Lee. But this only scratches the surface of the wonderful sounds which emanate from this talented group. Not to be missed!

Sat 15th December – Christmas Party Night with the Harlem Hot Stompers – and would you believe it – it’s Christmas Party Time again! The ‘official’ start to the Christmas Festivities with its traditional festive atmosphere, nibbles, mince pies and the special Christmas raffle. And the whole fun filled celebration driven along at a cracking pace by the Harlems with their special guests - Bill Smith on cornet and Mike Pembroke on trombone. A fitting end to a wonderful year of wonderful sounds!

Russell Corbett's November 2018 North East preview

Following hot on the heels of last month’s hugely successful Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender comes Mike Durham’s Classic Jazz Party. Formerly the Whitley Bay Jazz Festival, the three day Jazz Party - Nov 2-4 - attracts ‘classic jazz’ era fans from across Britain, Europe and America to the Village Hotel on North Tyneside. Similarly, musicians fly in from all four corners of the globe making the weekend gathering the pre-eminent festival of its kind this side of the Atlantic. Americans include the trumpeters Duke Heitger and Andy Schumm, drummer Josh Duffee, together with first time visitor Dan Levinson, reeds. The European contingent’s number includes French trumpeter Malo Mazurie, Germany’s Matthias Seuffert, reeds, and Norwegian master pianist Morten Gunnar-Larsen. Britain’s virtuoso pianist Keith Nichols leads some of the host nation’s finest including the always entertaining Spats Langham, trumpeter Jamie Brownfield and, from Co Durham, violinist Emma Fisk. There is much else on offer during the month including a particularly strong jazz element at Sage Gateshead. Curtis Stigers returns with an all-star NYC quartet. Vocalist, and occasional saxophonist, Stigers will be playing numbers from his recently recorded Sinatra album (Mon 5). The following evening (Nov 6) there couldn’t be much more of a contrast with Soft Machine in Sage Two. Etheridge, Babbington and Marshall will be joined by Theo Travis as they revisit fifty years’ worth of material. London-based Kansas Smitty’s House Band makes its Sage Gateshead bow (Fri 9) and at the end of the month (Tues 27) trombonist Jason Holcomb premieres a commissioned work - Sacrification - as part of a triple bill dance evening with Eliot Smith Dance.

Newcastle’s Riverside venue isn’t known for its jazz gigs but on Wed 7 GoGo Penguin can be heard playing there. It will be interesting to see who turns out.

Saxophonist Sue Ferris plays two gigs in eight days, first a trio date at Bishop Auckland Town Hall (Nov 16), then a quintet outing at Durham’s Gala Theatre (lunchtime Nov 23). Topping and tailing the month are two contrasting gigs. An interesting looking proposition is a first gig by the wonderfully named Charkie Parlour.  Violinist John Garner leads the contemporary quartet – guitarist Mark Williams, bassist John Pope and drummer Russ Morgan – at the Globe (Nov 1), meanwhile, closing out the month (Nov 30), violinist Emma Fisk takes her ever-popular Hot Club du Nord to St Cuthbert’s Centre in Crook, County Durham.

Finally, a date for the diary - Sat 17th. Queen’s Hall, Hexham hosts the second, annual Forever the Beat of the Drum fundraising concert in memory of drummer Mark Jon Bolderson. Following the death of the Tyne Valley Big Band’s former drummer, a percussion foundation was established and this concert forms a key element in ongoing fundraising activities.                   

New and award-winning bands at the Jazz Co-op

Ashington Jazz Club on the move

The Jazz Café in Newcastle is not the only club moving house in the North East. Ashington Jazz club run by John Taylor are moving in December to a new venue, a new day and new times. Details of the new venue/dates/times etc. will be given out  at the last gig at the Elephant next Wednesday 7 November

Gordon Solomon (who ran our original band the Rivercity Jazzmen and named Sting STING) is back playing again. He will be a special guest with our resident band  Classic Swing next Wednesday, ending a relationship with the Elephant which goes back 33 years

Requiem with Alan Barnes and Josie Moon

Gill Wilde has an exciting Announcement from Grimsby Jazz With Grimsby Jazz Projects and La Luna. With support from Arts Council England a new project is now underway: Requiem: the Alan Barnes Octet with poet Josie Moon

Following the outstanding success of the Fish Tales tour, CD and publication, we have an exciting and ambitious new project for 2019. Bringing together the creative imagination of poet Josie Moon and the dynamic composition talents of Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy along with a stellar line-up of international artists; Dave Green, Gilad Atzmon, Mark Nightingale, Sebastiaan De Krom, Dean Masser and Neil Yates, A Requiem is a bold and challenging work that examines the impact of conflict on individuals across a century, beginning in the trenches and ending in a robust call for peace in our time.

The work honours those who have fought, died and made huge personal sacrifices while also asking important questions about the very nature of warfare. Daring and audacious in style and structure, A Requiem is a moving but ultimately uplifting and soulful work which invites the audience to both remember the history of conflict and resolve to do better in the future. Tour dates and the new CD release will be announced in 2019.

There is also an aspect which will be of  interest to schools - the Arts Council funding also includes funding for a children's project: A Soldier Through Time: schools will have the opportunity to engage in a workshop in which they will learn six original songs and use drama and storytelling techniques to explore the themes.  The children will also have an opportunity to take part in a Singing Festival performance day. A Soldier Through Time will give children a chance to think about war from the perspective of a soldier who exists inside and outside conflict, as the soldier will be a time traveller commenting on war past and present. With match funding from individual music HUBs, (MEH's) this could be available as a workshop, CPD, including a story book with words and music.

Quadro (meaning ‘picture’ in Italian) is the new trio by award-winning vocalist Georgia Mancio and much lauded pianist Frank Harrison and bassist Andrew Cleyndert. Together they present jazz and Brazilian standards alongside reinvented classical repertoire by composers including Strayhorn / Ellington, Tom Jobim, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Artie Shaw and Waldemar Henrique.

Other credits include Bobby McFerrin, Ian Shaw, Liane Carroll, Gwilym Simcock and ReVoice!- her own international voice festival.

Frank has performed globally with Gilad Atzmon, Tim Garland, Peter King, Julian Arguelles, Julian Siegel and Louis Stewart. Described by Ronnie Scott as “one of the most talented young musicians I have heard” he also leads his own trio with several releases to his name.

Andrew has long been considered “one of our finest bassists” (London Jazz) with stellar credits including Stan Tracey, Annie Ross, Bobby Wellins, Gene Harris, Junior Mance and Benny Green. He is also a bandleader, sound engineer and runs his own label - Trio Records.

The group have performed at Reading, Birmingham and Cambridge Jazz Clubs, London’s The Pheasantry and Pizza Express Jazz Club and a sell out show at 2016 Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Sheffield Jazzwill be presenting four gigs in November, all at Crookes Social Club, Mulehouse Road, Sheffield S10 1TD, and all starting at 8.00 pm.

Tony Kofi and the Organisation will be playing on Friday 9 November.  "A killer band with real bite"... Mark Youll, Jazzwise magazine. The award-winning multi-instrumentalist leads his new quartet in a performance of hard-hitting jazz,blues, Latin, hard bop and post-bop including rarely performed classics by the likes of George Russell , Woody Shaw, Duke Pearson, Pepper Adams and others. They visit Sheffield as part of a tour to mark the release of their debut album “Point Blank".

On Friday 16 November we welcome Hexagonal, bringing to Sheffield music based on the joyous, pulsating township-influenced jazz of the late, great South African multi-instrumentalist and composer Bheki Mseleku. The band’s brief is simple: to expand its horizons while staying close to the spirit of Mseleku's highly tuneful approach to jazz, which now means an increasing amount of compositional input from the group's own members (John Donaldson, Jason Yarde, Greg Heath Graeme Flowers, Simon Thorpe and Tristan Banks), as well as personal re-arrangements of works by other composers who inspired Mseleku, most notably McCoy Tyner.

On Friday 23 November, Sheffield Jazz is delighted to have the opportunity to host the fabulous 20-piece Stan Sulzmann’s Neon Orchestra, comprising the cream of the younger generation of British jazz musicians alongside well-established figures. Neon Orchestra’s 70th Birthday Tour celebrates both new music and the best of British composers and it is a rare chance to see one of the most original and exciting big bands working anywhere in Europe.

The Freddie Gavita Quartet will be playing in Sheffield on Friday 30 November. Rising star Freddie Gavita won the British Jazz Award for best trumpeter of 2017 and his 2017 album Transient was aimed at the heart, not the head, with a highly evocative collection of compositions written for his quartet. The music has global appeal with scintillating grooves, heartfelt ballads and some serious swing. A high-powered line up of top players ensures a night to remember.

John Etheridge at Hull Jazz

Forcoming attraction at Hulljazz. Guitar maestro John Etheridge takes time out from his Soft Machine world tour to visit Hull (as you do!) with his Trio North, ably assisted by Ben Crosland on bass and Caroline Boaden on drums.
