Ron Bottomley's Jazz Orchestra play Wakefield Jazz

This Friday (14th June) sees the last gig at Wakefield Jazz before the summer break, with the remarkable Ronnie Bottomley's All-Star Big Band. Ronnie, the legendary drummer, arranger and bandleader is celebrating his 90th birthday this year, but is continuing to produce new arrangements, while threatening that every gig might be his last.

1st – Chris Walker’s Pedigree Jazz Band – a salute to Trad Jazz 2019. This tribute to the famous UK Trad Jazz bands of the 50s and 60s is led by musician and broadcaster, Chris Walker – a member of the original Real Ale & Thunder Band.

8th – John Hallam/Kevin Grenfell Quintet – two of our well loved instrumentalists join together to create an evening of wonderful melodies aided and abetted by the delightful and soothing backing of Chris Holmes on piano, Ed Harrison on bass and Graham Smith on drums.

15th – Hot Club du Nord – first class sounds from the North East as we proudly present the Hot Club which re-creates the sounds of the 30s/40s Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grapelli’s Hot Club of France. Emma Fisk on violin, Jim Birkett guitar, Bruce Rollo bass.

29th – Storyville Jass Band – As always with the Dutch Bands who visit us, enthusiastic Traditional Jazz coupled with revival New Orleans sounds.

July 2019
6th – Echo 42 Big Band – “Yorkshire’s longest continuous running and versatile Big Band” returns to the Spa to present another evening of pure nostalgia.with the swinging, melodic sounds of the 40s, 50s and 60s.

13th - Swing Commanders – Boston Spa Festival Weekend. A stunningly vibrant and versatile group of multi –instrumentalists performing a truly exciting mix of of 40s/50s classics, boogie woogie and swing, jump jive and more.

27th – TubaDudes – Five versatile musicians from East Yorkshire with a repertoire ranging from Bix to Louis Jordan. We are assured of happy, foot tapping sounds and vocals from two guitars, trombone, tuba and drums.

From Jez Matthews - the Jazz at The Lescar line-up for the next few weeks up to the beginning of August

We're particularly happy to host US guests sharing the stage with brilliant Sheffield-based musicians in two wonderful, and very different gigs, Jamie Taylor and Sheryl Bailey in a great guitar duo, and Greg Abate featuring with the always swinging Nicola Farnon Trio. Also based in Sheffield, the Cesca Grace Quartet make their Lescar debut, supporting the critically acclaimed trio led by Tori Freestone. Jamie Taylor is also with us for the return of powerful sax player Joel Purnell.

We're also really pleased to welcome tours from some of the finest talent from around the UK and Europe. Trumpet innovator Tom Syson is with us in early June, and a Scottish/Dutch collaboration LoLanders are sure to fire up the Lescar backroom later in the same month. Two of London's most engaging and innovative vocalists join us, with Brigitte Beraha and Fini Bearman bringing their own projects, the latter a reimagining of the music of David Bowie.

Two incredible bass talents bring their own very fiery, but also quite different projects John Pope and Huw V Williams are with us in July and August respectively. And finally we're delighted to welcome in July alto sax player Rachel Head with a fine sextet of new talent from the Cardiff jazz scene.

Jazz Leeds Festival gets the money!
We are incredibly excited to announce that this year's Jazz Leeds Festival, our third, will be receiving support from the Arts Council England! It is a real endorsement from the Arts Council about our plans to develop a sustainable jazz festival in Leeds,one in which the city can be proud. Jazz Leeds is a charity completely run by volunteers, and we started with a one day festival in Millennium Square in 2017 and this year have both a five day fringe festival throughout the city, leading up to a four day main festival based around the Wardrobe and Leeds College of Music. The Fringe festival starts on 12 July and the main festival runs 18-21 July.

There are free events, workshops, meet ups, films, spoken word events, big bands, salsa, contemporary jazz, world music, improv events and even jazz bingo! We have a feature on Jazz and Windrush with US saxman Jean Toussaint, trumpet player Byron Wallen and pianist Trevor Watkis; a headline appearance from Andy Sheppard with the Norwegian Espen Eriksen trio; an all star Electric Lady Big Band recreating in a jazz style the music of Jimi Hendrix 50 years after his Electric Ladyland release; New York based jazz pianist and ECM record star Shai Maestro with his trio; Bex Burch and Vula Viel - a uniquely engaging mix of African, punk and minimalist influences, based around the Ghanaian Gyil, not to mention rising jazz stars like Leo Richardson and Misha Mullov Abbado, a new record album launch from Leeds trombone hero Kevin Holbrough and a 90th birthday celebration of Leeds big band drummer Ronnie Bottomley. The Chapel Allerton Festival is back!
Thanks to all those people who have stepped forward to offer their services as stewards, helpers, event managers etc during the past month  - it will be happening now! Jazz Leeds are very much involved in organising the Village Jazz part of the Festival. We will have two evenings at Seven Arts - on Thursday 29th August a double header with Nel Begley and Jami Sheriff's "Rafe's Dilemma" plus local jazz trumpeter and festival stalwart Phil Green's Biggish Band. On Saturday 31st August an inspirational blend of jazz, traditional Zulu music and Afro-pop from "Ubunye". We also finish the Arts Festival with the usual popular mix of Jazz and Blues on 1st September in Regent Street with six bands playing jazz, blues and soul - including the Soul Surgeons, Rhythm De-Luxe,  Vibe-ology, New Position, "Louis Louis Louis" and wonderful blues singer Kyla Brox.

Russell Corbett's June North East round up

All eyes - and ears - on Durham this month. The third edition of DJazz: The Durham City Jazz Festival takes place over three days (Friday 7-Sunday 9) at several venues ranging from the small, not to mention quirky, Holy GrAle bottled beer shop to the splendour of Durham Cathedral. A pop-up festival hub will be in operation adjacent to the now closed Empty Shop venue. The Riverwalk location - shops, bars, restaurants - can't fail to attract the casual tourist which guarantees a public profile many a jazz festival promoter would die for.

Opening DJazz 2019 on Friday evening in the historic pitmen's parliament at Redhills will be Arun Gosh. The following evening festival headliner Moses Boyd brings his Exodus project to the Flass Street venue and late Sunday afternoon a treat awaits in Durham Cathedral with a duo set by pianist Paul Edis and Edinburgh-based Graeme Wilson (reeds). Dr Edis will be pulling out some/many/all of the stops as he attempts to get to grips with the pipe organ! Improvising guitarist George Burt will be calling into Holy GrAle to perform an unmissable set - perhaps he'll buy a few bottles! - but it should be noted the place is tiny, therefore, if you want to be sure of hearing the Scot, be sure to arrive early. The opening night of DJazz (Friday 7) clashes with three other 'musts' - Vasilis Xenopoulos will be at Ushaw with the Paul Edis Trio, Emma Fisk's Hot Club du Nord entertains at Hullabaloo (the venue adjoins Darlington's Hippodrome) and in Saltburn the brilliant Brownfield-Byrne Quintet can be found in the Community Hall and Theatre. Toss a coin...

Much else is happening across the region during June; some of the highlights include maverick American Eugene Chadbourne working with drummer Andrew Cheetham at Newcastle's Star & Shadow Cinema (Monday 10), the Customs House Big Band celebrating its twentieth anniversary at HQ (South Shields' Customs House) on Sunday 16 (don't get caught out by the 6:00pm start) and, on the same night, the Francis Tulip Quartet will be at the Black Bull, Blaydon.

Three big band gigs to look forward to; the award-winning Durham University Big Band plays an end of term gig in Dunelm House (the Students' Union) on Thursday 13. It's open to the public, it's free admission and it's always a blast. One week later DUBB rocks up in Newcastle to fulfill a Jazz North East engagement in Newcastle Arts Centre's basement Black Swan venue. The other big band gig features the star-studded Strictly Smokin' Big Band at one of its regular haunts, Hoochie Coochie on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle. As usual it's a Sunday afternoon gig (5:30), the date for the diary - June 23.

Finally, this one could be a contender for Gig of the Year - Edinburgh's Tenement Jazz Band will once again be entertaining scores of swing dancers at the Prohibition Bar (formerly the Jazz Cafe) on Pink Lane, Newcastle on Monday 17. If you're in the vicinity don't miss the Tenements, they're seriously good. Well, that's scratched the surface, there's so much more jazz out there, go hear some of it!

Our slight departure from our usual offerings last month delivered by Mr Langham’s skilful Hot Fingers and the just amazing classical vocalist Emily Campbell with their extremely well presented, relatively new ‘And The Banned Played On Show’ attracted a gradely crowd.. It will come as of no surprise to you to hear that the night’s miscellany of numbers was of course rooted out by the forensic inquisitiveness of the Bands Leader Mr Tom Langham. I think that all those present experienced a night that they will not forget for quite some time!

Tonight’s High Society Jazz Band from the Cumbria area should be making their third appearance at the Dove Jazz Club but in actual fact it will only be their second owing to the severity of the Winter weather in March 2018 understandably preventing their appearance. The Band is now enjoying its thirteenth year on the ‘Traditional Jazz Circuit’ with their hugely varied repertoire honed to entertain their audiences as well as giving them an insight into the many different aspects of the jazz genre. They have an innovative and vastly experienced two man front line comprising their titular head Bruce Carnaffin playing clarinet, bass clarinet. He is joined by Peter Boswell who ably performs on both cornet and trombone; could there be a Brass Band influence somewhere here I ask myself? A strong and seasoned rhythm section will contain Dave Bateman with his guitar and banjo, Gerry Clayton playing his well-travelled string bass and last but not least Robin Andrews on board his percussion kit which also contains a washboard and harmonica. Bruce Carnaffin also does much to promote the ‘Jazz Cause’ as the Chairman of Kendal Jazz Club; a position that he has proudly held since 2009.

Singer, song-writer and guitarist Larry Van Kriedt has seen it all, from San Francisco via Sydney, to landing right here in Huddersfield.  Larry has raw authenticity and musical experience in spades.  His band features some of the finest jazz musicians in the North featuring:
