Bad Plus/Binker and Moses @Assembly Room Leeds

Iconclastic jazz trio The Bad Plus came together at the end of the 20th century and have consistently avoided easy categorisation with their creativity, unique sound and gift for joyful live performance.
Based in New York City, they have constantly searched for rules to break, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect synchrony.

The trio play from their new album (released September 2016), threading ingenious eclectic covers through their own uncompromising originals. They continue to redefine what a jazz piano trio can be. "So, if this piano trio wants to play as loud as a rock band; well, let 'em rip...these bad boys have the musicianship to back up their attitude".
The New Yorker

Opening the show are Binker & Moses. Best Newcomer winners at the Jazz FM and Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Best Jazz winners at the MOBOs, the duo draw on all aspects of black music, their unusual chemistry constructing a sound that ranges from ‘a kind of unplugged dub ambience’ (Jazzwise) via lengthy entwined solos to groove-laden trac

Terence Blanchard & The Inner City Ensemble play four northern dates

If you saw their memorable concert at last year's Gateshead International Jazz Festival you'll be interested to know that Terence Blanchard & The Inner City Ensemble are back doing a four date Northern tour this September.

Since top-tier jazz and multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard embarked on his solo recording career with his eponymous Columbia Records album in 1991, the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings of original material, composing over 50 soundtracks and even, in 2013, debuting Champion: An Opera in Jazz. He has also, in the spirit of his onetime membership in the jazz school of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, mentored several musicians in his bands who have gone on to have significant recording careers of their own (including Lionel Loueke, Aaron Parks, Kendrick Scott and one of his current band members Fabian Almazan).

The E collective are electric bassist Donald Ramsey (a colleague from their New Orleans high school days) and drummer Oscar Seaton (a Chicago native who got his first break playing with Ramsey Lewis in 1996 and later played in soundtracks written by Terence) guitarist Charles Altura and Fabian Almazan on piano and synths.

Tipping Point and Impossible Gentlemen at Leeds College of Music

Impossible Gentlemen 11 October

Two autumn concerts announced at The Venue, Leeds College of Music

TIPPING POINT
The Earthworm’s Eye View Tour. Saxophonist, composer, singer-songwriter and now label boss James Mainwaring is perhaps best known as a founder member of the Mercury Prize nominated Roller Trio or more recently as a collaborator with and touring member of fellow Mercury nominees Django, Django, who he met at the 2012 awards. Tipping Point is his new project and the second release on Lamplight Social Records, the label he founded to release the second Roller Trio album, Fracture, after becoming frustrated with the machinations of the music industry.

Tipping Point features James Mainwaring on saxophone and effects alongside British improvised music legend Matthew Bourne (Fender Rhodes) and two of the UK’s most individual instrumentalists; Michael Bardon (double bass) and Joost Hendrickx (drums). Members of the band have previously collaborated on projects such as; Dave Kane’s Rabbit Project, the Fusebox Orchestra, Shatner’s Bassoon and Mainwaring/Bardon/Horne amongst many others.

It was whilst studying at Leeds College of Music (2007 – 2010) when Mainwaring, Bardon and Hendrickx met and were tutored by Bourne, a pianist whose innovative approach to improvisation and teaching proved to be a great influence on them that the genesis for Tipping Point was born.

Toying with language internalised from a vast range of music such as jazz, contemporary classical and north Indian classical, Mainwaring’s compositions for Tipping Point aim to evoke playfulness, mindfulness, darkness and extremes of emotion, the band journeys from reflective ambience to intense aggression, using telepathic improvisations, angular melodies and unorthodox sounds from eerie to comic.

August North East jazz events - from Russell Corbett

Tubby Hayes – A Man in a Hurry’ Aug 14 North Sheilds

Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival is the major event in the north east during August. The bank holiday weekend - Friday 26 to Sunday 28 - at Ushaw College on the outskirts of Durham welcomes some of Britain’s premier jazz musicians together with many of the area’s very best talents on show. Ushaw, until recently a Catholic seminary, stands majestically in its own grounds. Ushaw is worth a visit in itself, the fact that you can hear some great jazz is something of a bonus! Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Nigel Price…that’s three names to tempt the jazz fan. Add the erudite Alyn Shipton in a ‘What is jazz?’ presentation with an always amusing Alan Barnes and appearances from Zoë Gilby, the New Century Ragtime Orchestra, Graham Hardy’s Northern Monkey Brass Band (heard recently on BBC Radio 3) and the award winning Durham Alumni Big Band and you have the makings of a first, successful Ushaw Jazz Festival. Full details (there is much more) at www.ushaw.org

From the Land of the Prince Bishops to the High Seas. Blyth, south east Northumberland, stages the North Sea Tall Ships event over the same late August holiday weekend. A jazz gig aboard a tall ship isn’t an everyday occurrence and the Mississippi Dreamboats board at seven in the evening on Sunday 28. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected in Blyth and the Dreamboats will certainly be flying the north east jazz flag.

The Milne-Johnston Band’s standard will be flying high at the Fox Inn, Hexham, Aug 16. Versatile vocalist Debra Milne fronts the outfit alongside the brilliant young guitarist and recent graduate of Sage Gateshead’s BMus degree course, Bradley Johnston. Admission, as at so many gigs, is free. Donations are welcome, so dig deep. The down beat is at nine.

Frank Brooker is the lunchtime guest of Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club (Saturday 3). The amiable multi-reedsman will be working in the company of his Happy Chappies. The well appointed St Augustine’s Parish Centre on Larchfield Street (raised stage and that all important bar) will be anticipating a large turn out to hear a most underrated musician.

Lee Cogswell’s documentary film ‘Tubby Hayes – A Man in a Hurry’ is to be screened at the recently re-opened Exchange on Howard Street, North Shields. The venue is to host a new music festival and it would appear that the favourably reviewed jazz biopic (Sunday 14 Aug) constitutes the jazz element. A day ticket (there will be other events) costs £17.50.

Four gigs in a day. Up for the challenge? Saturday 20 August, take the Quaylink bus over to Springwell. At lunchtime you’ll find the Levee Ramblers at Bowes Railway. Jot down a few engine numbers, or not, as you’re listening to Dave Rae’s strict New Awlins’ band. Make the return journey to Newcastle Quayside, change to the Ouseburn-bound Quaylink service around four in the afternoon and arrive in good time for the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band’s annual outdoor BBQ gig at the Tyne Bar. A great band, it’s one of the highlights of the year and it costs nowt! Just before seven, jump on the bus back to the Quayside. A rare treat awaits at the Vermont Hotel. At the swanky establishment, perched on high, it’s none other than Zoë Gilby accompanied by Mark Williams in Joe Pass mode. Unmissable and guess what? It’ll cost you precisely nowt! The fourth and final leg of your jazz day is a trip to the Jazz Co-op (aka the Globe) to hear Claire Kelly sing accompanied by pianist Peter Gilligan. Ms Kelly is in town on a flying visit before she returns to the Far East. At a fiver admission you’ve got yourself a bargain. Have yourself a very busy jazz day!

A week earlier (Aug 13) the DB Sound Project Trio can be heard at the Globe. Dave Keighley’s coruscating tenor saxophone takes no prisoners – not a gig for the faint-hearted. Finally, from the power-jazz trio to the Paul Edis Trio. Pianist Edis makes a welcome return to Blaydon Jazz Club (Aug 21) working with bassist Andy Champion and drummer Russ Morgan.

The band puts an emphasis on original writing, with arrangements often conceived together as a group, and takes inspiration from sources as wide-ranging as Wayne Shorter, folk music of the British Isles, the European jazz scene and groove/rock music. During our time at the Academy we have also received coaching as a band from F-IRE Collective founder Barak Schmool.

Southport Jazz on a Winters Weekend grows on!

Clare Teal 3 Feb
From Neil Hughes

I'm delighted to introduce the 13th Jazz On A Winter’s Weekend in Southport 2nd -5th February 2017. For me it has been a pleasure to programme the Festival for my first time under the watchful eye of Geoff Matthews. I have incorporated the flavours that Southport has become well known for; international artists, challenging and contempory jazz, some big band music and of course the best in British with a lovely north-west smattering.

This year the international theme features Trichotomy (Australia), Seamus Blake  (New York) and the Fabien Mary Quartet (Paris). We also have a return of The Ben Cox Band playing their sweet original tunes from their second album "Round And Round", original jazz from The Train & The River (Jeremy Price, Andy Panayi And Jez Franks) plus Jam Experiment with some beautiful music.

Our Big Band Section features two wonderful bands. On the Friday 3rd Feb, Radio 2 Broadcaster Clare Teal, joining Swingtime Big Band, directed by Jez Murphy. Then on Sunday, The Birmingham Conservatoire Ellington Orchestra  with music from The Far East Suite. featured soloist Liam Noble on piano.

A couple of changes too- this year we have added a Thursday night into the mix for those who travel from afar with Liverpool Band "The Weave". On Saturday we have a Gala Dinner as an optional extra. This year we feature Liane Carroll, award winning Jazz Singer and Pianist.

Geoff Matthews called his festival “The Best Jazz House Party In The UK” and we aim to continue that at the Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa.  If you make it to the end we close with Iain Dixon, Les Chisnall & Mike Walker Quintet – what a finish !

The best in world to Hull this July

Jean Toussaint Sat 23 July

David Porter writes

J-Night is proud to present the 24th Summer Edition of Hull Jazz Festival, bringing the best in world jazz, funk and improvised music to venues across Hull from 21st to 24th July.

The festival opens on Thursday 21st July at Hull Truck Theatre with Minima’s stunning original live score to cult silent horror movie Nosferatu. Minima tease out the grim comedy in this darkly humorous yet tender tale of yearning, and draw the audience into the vampire’s nightmare world.

Friday 22nd July at Hull Truck Theatre sees double MOBO Award-winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown performing her Reggae Love Songs set with an incredible live band. You can expect a show that touches on jazz, soul and reggae, all wrapped up with an infectious set of fun.

The Friday night programme continues at Kardomah94, a new venue for Hull Jazz Festival, where gypsy jazz quartet Daj Dook, featuring Hull-born violinist Matt Holborn, will be channeling the spirit of Django Reinhardt. The finest in gypsy jazz with a modern swing, perfect for easing yourself into the weekend.

Across town at Fruit on Friday 22nd, New Hull Jazz is a special triple bill of homegrown Hull talent. Rapper Chiedu Oraka opens for local funk heroes Pearl’s Cab Ride and Refix Project, the exciting new collaboration fronted by Lyn Acton and Audrey Okyere-Fosu and featuring Dave Gawthorpe, producer Endoflevelbaddie, and multimedia visuals from Jay Moy.

Saturday 23rd July features a trio of incredible shows at Hull Truck Theatre. At 3pm Helen Watson, one of the UK’s premier jazz-blues singers, teams up with long time friend and collaborator, saxophonist Snake Davis, for an intimate set of rhythm and blues, jazz and soul standards, put together specially for Hull Jazz Festival. At 6pm saxophonist and former Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint brings his Young Lions to Hull Truck with Roots & Herbs: The Blakey Project, his celebration of the music of late, great Art Blakey. With a line-up featuring some of the brightest rising stars in British jazz, this is the summer’s must-see jazz gig in Hull. Wrapping up proceedings at Hull Truck at 9pm on the Saturday, acid jazz legends James Taylor Quartet, renowned for their incredible funk-driven live performances, make a very welcome return to Hull.

The Saturday programme continues at Fruit with a festival double bill of beautiful, atmospheric live music. Snake Davis and Helen Watson appear again with Burden of Paradise, with a spellbinding acoustic set of evocative songs ranging from Bob Dylan to Dowland. Stuart McCallum: City sees the Cinematic Orchestra guitarist teaming up with Richard Spaven (drums), Zoe Chlotis (vocals) and John Ellis (keyboards) to create a new ambient-electronica-jazz soundscape.

On Sunday 24th July from 12:00 noon, a special Jazz Festival Brunch sees Manjula providing treats for the ears while delicious food is served at Hull Truck Café Bar. Their fusion of global sounds combines rhythms and melodies from Portuguese, African, Latin jazz and Indian cultures, led by Vanessa Rani Chutturghoon’s enchanting voice.

Full programme details are available online at www.jnight.org. Tickets for all Hull Truck shows are available from Hull Truck Theatre at www.hulltruck.co.uk or on 01482 323638 and for shows at Fruit from Hull Box Office at www.hullboxoffice.co.uk or on 01482 221113. Tickets for the Daj Dook show at Kardomah94 can be bought in person from Kardomah 94 or via Hull Box Office.

Jazz Round up in the North East - July 2016

Zhenya Strigalev July 15 Globe

From Russell Corbett

People get ready, there’s a jazz train a comin’. Get on board the Tyne Valley Hong Kong curry train and take time to ponder a major mid-month dilemma this July. Ex-pat Geordie trumpeter Colin Aitchison makes his annual pilgrimage to his native Tyneside to play as many gigs in one week as it is humanly possible to do. A Satchmo disciple, Aitchison has an insatiable appetite for jazz. Our Man in Hong Kong will arrive with a clarinet virtuoso, Italian born, Hong Kong-based Franco Valussi, and a Jumbo jet full of jazz crazy fans.

Aitchison and Valussi feature in the Reunion Band at the Black Bull, Blaydon (July 10). The Bridge Street pub is likely to be jam-packed as the two horn players will be joined by Steve Andrews, reeds, making it a three-strong front line ably supported by Roly Veitch, guitar and Roy Cansdale, double bass. Aichison and Valussi have a train to catch on July 6 from Newcastle Central Station. They’ll be joined by a band of jazz friends to entertain an unsuspecting, captive audience of Tyne Valley rail commuters. Alighting at Corbridge station, still blowing, they’ll step into the Valley Restaurant (conveniently situated on the station platform) to enjoy a curry and a glass or two with the Vieux Carré Jazzmen.

Travel east on the Metro (Tyneside’s light railway network) to Tynemouth. Arrive by one o’clock on July 25 and you’ll hear none other than Zoë Gilby singing. A North Tyneside Council initiative, commuters will be able to listen to jazz on the platform each weekday throughout the summer. If you’re passing through Tynemouth the chances are you’ll hear the Maine Street Jazzmen one day, the Vieux Carré Jazzmen the next. A local council deserving of a pat on the back.

There is a big occasion in Darlington on July 4. A Monday night, a school night, make an exception and get along to the Dolphin Centre for a rare appearance in the area of NYJO! Darlington Jazz Club has pushed the boat out for this one. Make the effort.

NARC, a regional ‘what’s on’ magazine, is promoting a festival of music in the Ouseburn valley cultural quarter and this year, for the first time, there is a joint promotion with Jazz North East on July 2. The free admission multiple bill represents good value, particularly as it features Zoë Gilby: Watching Sideways, Mick Beck, Charlie Collins and Derek Saw, jazz power trio Taupe and Not Now Charlie. Twenty four hours later (July 3) Jazz North East presents the music of Ornette Coleman. The John Pope Quintet featuring Johnny Hunter (drums) and Faye MacCalman (reeds) will rework Coleman and perform tunes inspired by the free jazz icon in the upstairs room of the Bridge Hotel, Newcastle.

July 15 will put many in a quandary. Five gigs, each one five star, you choose: lunchtime at the Gala, Durham it’s the Gerry Richardson Quartet, on Friday evening do you stay in Durham for the Hot 8 Brass Band or head to Newcastle to catch Zhenya Strigalev at the Globe or King Bee at Hoochie Coochie? Alternatively you could head south to Opus 4 Jazz Club’s gig in Darlington to hear the Lewis Watson-Mark Toomey Quintet. And finally, if you go to just one gig in July (just one gig, surely not?) it has to be Alan Glen at the Globe on July 28. The modern jazz piano maestro plays a birthday gig. 80 not out!
