Ushaw Jazz Festival, Durham 26-28 August

The new Jazz Festival at Durham University's Ushaw College starts August 26th. Here are the gigs and times

FRIDAY 26th Aug (evening ticket - £8)
Northern Monkey Brass Band – Exhibition Hall, 6pm, £5
Northern Monkey Brass Band (formerly known as Horn Dogs) are a deeply funky collective of some of the finest drum and brass players in the North East of England.

Zoe Gilby Quartet – Francis Thompson Room 8:15pm, £5
Zoë Gilby is a  vocalist and songwriter that has been making a stunning impression on the music scene today. Her compelling original compositions written with double bassist husband Andy Champion and performed by her highly accomplished band, guitarist Mark Williams and drummer Richard Brown.

SATURDAY 27th  (day ticket £25)
Early Bird Band, 11am FREE
Featuring some of the rising stars of youth jazz in the North East, the Early Bird Band started meeting at the Lit and Phil back in May 2015.

Durham Alumni Big Band and Al Wood 1pm £7
The Durham Alumni Big Band have made frequent festival appearances in recent years. For this concert they are joined by Al Wood, who in addition to being a renowned jazz educator has a CV that includes working alongside Maynard Ferguson, Dionne Warwick and the BBC Big Band...

Improvisation Workshop with Paul Edis 2:30pm FREE
This workshop is open for anyone to come along and learn more about improvisation. Bring your instruments! A keyboard, drum kit, bass amp and guitar amp will be provided.

Alyn Shipton and Alan Barnes – What is Jazz? 4pm Exhibition Hall £5
Writer and broadcaster Alyn Shipton joins forces with the always entertaining Alan Barnes for a humorous talk on that most confusing of subjects ‘What is Jazz’?

Mark Williams and Joel McCulloch, 6pm £5
Mark and Joel studied together on the Bmus Jazz degree at Newcastle College in 2000.Joel has returned to the North East and so the duo has picked up where they left off many moons ago.

Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Paul Edis Trio, Exhibition Hall 8pm, £10
Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist.  He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers.

Jam Session with Peter Gilligan Trio – Francis Thompson Room 10:15pm till late - FREE
The Peter Gilligan Trio have established a hugely popular jam session at the Jazz Cafe in Newcastle that regularly features a host of local talent and guest artists dropping in. Musicians are welcome to sit in and jam with the trio. For the audience – you never quite know what to expect!

SUNDAY 28th (day ticket - £20)
Square One – Francis Thompson Room, 1pm £5
Glasgow-based contemporary jazz quartet with high-octane original compositions, and a diverse range of influences from jazz to rock, folk and groove-based music.

New Century Ragtime Orchestra – Exhibition Hall, 4pm £10
Unique in Britain, this 12 piece orchestra will take you on a musical journey from the dawn of ragtime (Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb and James Scott) through the hot dance and jazz music of the 1920's (King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton) to the early swing era of the 1930's

Nigel Price Trio – Francis Thompson Room, 8pm £7
Nigel Price  - who led his organ trio to pick up the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Award for “best jazz ensemble” is one of the most highly regarded and in demand guitarists on the UK jazz scene today.
