The Impossible Gentlemen launch new album in Manchester

The new album launch from The Impossible Gentlemen will be held in the Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music on Tuesday 26 July 8.00pm

This Anglo-American jazz supergroup, now joined by Manchester's multi-reeds maestro Iain Dixon, are five unique talents, all superb players in their own right, joining forces to create sparkling, impassioned music with their trademark powerful and immaculate performances.

Their pieces effortlessly embrace jazz, raunchy blues and hard-rocking grooves with the elegance of classical music, delicate vignettes, soaring improvised lines and Pat Metheny-influenced guitar themes. The ensemble’s sound palette is rhythmically intense and harmonically adventurous and the addition of saxophone brings out the band’s melodic drive yet further.

With an on-stage presence that radiates easy humour and a delight in each other’s company that belies their virtuosity, they return to mjf with music from their third album Let’s Get Deluxe, which is launched this evening.

Sproggits is back once again tonight at Wharf Chambers, and what a lovely line-up this month. World-jazz duo AfuriKo will be bringing their unique blend of jazz harmony and African groove as part of their UK tour promoting their new album 'Style'. Opening up the night we'll have a brand spanking new project from Ozzy Moysey, featuring some Leeds heavyweights playing his original tunes. Surely not to be missed! Clare Teal heads back to Dales

Accompanied by her trio, award-winning singer and BBC Radio 2 presenter, Clare Teal returns to her childhood home in the Yorkshire Dales to present her new show Twelve O’Clock Tales in Settle on 26th May.

This rich, jazz infused repertoire explores timeless classics penned by the legendary musical storytellers of the last 100 years, and celebrates the giants of the Great American and British Song Books through to the work of more contemporary writers of today plus Clare’s own original compositions.

The music played in these shows is always evolving, from The Great American and British Songbooks to the music made popular by her heroes, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day and Peggy Lee to more contemporary covers and original material. Clare loves to create a melting pot of styles and genres, but all sung in her inimitable style. Beautiful melodies, fabulous arrangements and all interspersed with Clare’s warm and witty story telling.

May jazz gigs at the Howard Assembly Room

Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman 4 May
 Cory Henry 14 May
High Masekela 28 May

Three major jazz concerts grace the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds during May. Firstly Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman refashion well-known standards on 4th May with an intimate airing of their studio album Song (The Ballad Book) . Pine’s virtuosic bass clarinet combines with Zoe Rahman’s exquisite keyboard interplay on standards including Amazing Grace and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, alongside more recent classics from Chaka Khan and Donny Hathaway.

Another huge talent using the Great American Songbook as his raw material, young Hammond organ maestro Cory Henry (14 May) takes jazz and gospel standards as jumping-off points for playful, soulful and incandescent improvised excursions.

A friendship stretching back over half a century is celebrated with the visit of two jazz icons, South African horn player Hugh Masekela and American pianist Larry Willis, on 28 May. From Masekela’s righteous apartheid-era Afro-jazz and hits like Grazing in the Grass, to yet more standards from the likes of Gershwin and Cole Porter, they promise a cross-continental journey through the music and the turbulent history of the last century, in the company of two legendary performers who were there.

Ros Rigby stands down...

The sad news - Ros Rigby OBE, Sage Gateshead’s Performance Programme Director, who has been at the Sage Gateshead since 2004, has announced that she will be standing down from the post at the end of July.

The good news - Ros will continue to work with Sage Gateshead on a project basis on its Gateshead International Jazz Festival which she has curated from it's start in 2005.

Abigail Pogson, Sage Gateshead’s Managing Director, also announced that Tamsin Austin, currently Head of Popular and Contemporary Programme at Sage Gateshead, has been appointed as Director of Programming to head up this team from September.

Ros Rigby initially worked in arts development roles in Peterlee and Gateshead before co-founding Folkworks in 1988, which became the UK’s foremost producer, presenter and educator in folk and traditional music. Ros was awarded the OBE for this work in 1999.

When Sage Gateshead opened, Folkworks, along with Royal Northern Sinfonia, was a founding partner and became integrated into the new organisation in 2001. Ros was appointed Performance Programme Director for Sage Gateshead with responsibility for around 300 concerts a year across, folk, jazz, world, non-western classical, brass bands, rock, pop, electronic and spoken word. The programme includes well established festivals such as Gateshead International Jazz Festival and SummerTyne Americana Festival.

Alongside her role at Sage Gateshead Ros has also been heavily involved in regional and international cultural developments;  she served on the Board of Northern Arts for six years in the 1990s and is a Board member of the North East Culture Partnership and chaired the Steering group for the Case for Culture, launched in 2015. She is also a Board member of the Europe Jazz Network, whose membership includes over 100 jazz promoters from 31 countries across Europe, and was elected President of the EJN in 2014.

Apart from the jazz programme Ros will combine other freelance work and non-executive roles with being able to spend more time with her three grandchildren, and in supporting her busy family’s own cultural activities.

Miles Ahead on general release from today

Miles Ahead, the film starring, written and directed by Don Cheadle, is now playing in UK Cinemas from today, 22nd April

This is Robbie Collins review in the Telegraph

"Miles Davis didn’t lead the kind of life that could be sensibly pinned down in a single film. Miles Ahead has the good sense not to try. This is a decade-in-the-making passion project from Don Cheadle, who directs, co-writes (with Steven Baigelman), and stars as the iconic jazz trumpeter himself – and its title neatly sums up where it stands in relation to the typically stodgy cinéma du Wikipedia with which we tend to memorialise our greatest artists and creators.

Miles Ahead isn’t so much a film about Miles Davis as one that approaches him in a Miles Davis kind of way, improvising its way around the edge of his life, finding stories that were never there in the first place but that nevertheless seem to say something clean and true about him that a straightforward melody line never could.

It’s a film about artistic block that is itself overflowing with ideas – and in this respect, it very knowingly shares some DNA with 8½, that extravagant masterpiece from Federico Fellini, in which a celebrated but exhausted director tries to push through a creative dry spell, only to be tormented and beguiled by his memories and dreams.

In the latter half of the 1970s, Davis found himself trapped in a similar cul-de-sac. Burned out by touring, he sunk into self-imposed exile, during which he binged on drugs and barely recorded a note. It’s the part of his life a typical biopic would skim over – or else acknowledge in the kind of "dark period" montage lampooned by the spoof music biopic Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Instead, Cheadle’s film uses it as a blank-ish canvas on which to doodle. The story begins with the arrival of Rolling Stone journalist Dave Braden (a superb, Scottish-accented Ewan McGregor) on the doorstep of Miles’s Manhattan apartment. Dave is looking for a scoop about a comeback, but instead he’s half-willingly roped into a kind of buddy crime caper involving some stolen demo tapes, with the usual race roles wittily reversed (Miles is the tough-talking lead, Dave the wacky sidekick).

As Miles purrs in the film’s prologue: “If you’re gonna tell a story, you better come with some attitude.” And attitude is exactly what Cheadle brings to this: after its opening sequence, the film literally cuts to the chase (a tyre-screeching pursuit through the New York night) before backing up a little to a more sensible entry point. Cheadle’s Davis impersonation is studiously carried off (he especially nails Davis’s husky graveyard growl), but more importantly, he makes the character great fun to spend time with, even at his lowest ebbs.

Many of these involve Davis’s first wife Frances (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a talented dancer who abandoned her own career for the sake of a marriage that Davis would soon destroy with infidelity and domestic violence. Their relationship is covered in flashbacks to the 1950s, and Cheadle can’t resist incorporating the famous incident outside the Birdland nightclub in 1959, in which Davis was beaten up by a police officer while taking a mid-concert break.

That’s one of the few greatest hits the film deigns to include: Kind of Blue’s famous album cover is vaguely alluded to in some smoky cinematography (the flashbacks were shot on 16mm film stock), and Davis’s fusion period, including the recording of his music-altering 1970 album Bitches Brew, is skipped over entirely. It’s not that Miles Ahead doesn’t care about this stuff, it’s that it largely doesn’t serve the story at hand, so out it goes in exchange for apocrypha that has an equal chance of irritating Miles-heads or impressing them with its brazen ingenuity.

The 1970s thread features Keith Stanfield as a promising young trumpeter called ‘Junior’ (Davis’s childhood nickname) who’s effectively Miles’s recollection of his younger self: whether or not you buy the gimmick, you have to concede it offers a perspective on Davis’s life that couldn’t have been achieved with a straight retelling.

This is a tumultuous and messy film that leaves you craving all the Miles Davis it doesn’t give you, and I wouldn’t have wanted it to be any other way."

Wakefield Jazz reach their Millennium

Friday the 15th April 2016 sees Wakefield Jazz hold their 1000th gig. Wakefield Jazz was founded in 1987 by Alec and Faith Sykes, who nurtured the club from its inception to national recognition. They created an audience and made friends with the musicians. Many of the very top UK and international jazz stars have performed at Wakefield including Jamie Culum, Clare Teal, Stan Tracey, Claire Martin, Ian Shaw, Snake Davis and Django Bates. Following Alec’s decision to “retire” from running the club after 17 years of hard labour, it was reconstituted to be run by a team of 10 volunteers, guided by the ever resourceful and enthusiastic Chris De Saram. Now almost three decades later they are putting on their 1000th terrific night of jazz.

Friday’s anniversary gig features the exciting contemporary jazz pianist John Law with his “New Congregation”. Described as one of the UK’s most imaginative and versatile pianists John brings three fantastic musicians with him on this Arts Council supported gig. The sumptuous playing of Josh Arcoleo on sax, bass mastery from the hands of Yuri Golubev and the intense work of Laurie Lowe on drums. This will be another jazz Friday night to remember, what more could you ask for to celebrate 1000 nights (except cake of course!)

Doors open at 7pm.  Food is available from 7.15pm First Set 8.30pm prompt, second set 10pm. Tickets £14.00 on the door. Friday the 15th April

National Jazz Promotion Network makes plans...

Gill Wilde from Grimsby Jazz at the JPN conference 2014

The national Jazz Promotion Network have their AGM and planning conference being held alongside the opening of the Rhythm Changes conference in Birmingham University next Thursday 14 April. If you are a member of JPN, attendance is free; if you aren't a member you can still attend costs £30. Details are here http://jazzpromotionnetwork.org.uk/agm-2016/

The JPN have been valiantly trying to make a national network of jazz promoters - a bit like what Norvoljazz do in the North to connect promoters so that they can more easily collaborate on events and programming and potentially make their own applications to the Arts Council.

Steve Crocker from Seven Jazz Leeds and secretary of Norvoljazz has been on the JPN board for the first couple of years to help set it up but is standing down to concentrate on other things - including the new Village Jazz Festival in Leeds to take place the first weekend in September in Chapel Allerton. Says Steve..

"Jazz Networks are hard work, but vital. You need to be patient, you need to build trust and relationships, and most importantly focus on the grass roots of jazz. That all takes time and it’s not very flashy or rewarding. I’ve been a board member of JPN for the first couple of years just because it it trying to do those things. I won’t be continuing in April but that’s due to personal time pressure not because I don’t believe in it. It is well worth supporting"

Norvoljazz could however still be represented on the board however through the Marsden Jazz Festival producer Barney Stevenson who has put his name forward. He'll be a great resource to the JPN. Let's hope he gets elected.
