Summer at Sheffield's Lescar

Sheffield Jazz may have finished for the summer but the Lescar carries on in the Steel City
Dinosaur 18 July

From Jez Matthews

We’re especially pleased this time to feature two Mercury prize nominated bands, Dinosaur and Roller Trio. We’ve also got bands led by Sheffield based singers Sally Doherty and Nicola Farnon (in a band jointly led with US sax legend Greg Abate) and two pianist/composers with roots in the Sheffield area (although no longer living here), Stella Roberts, and Laura Cole. Acclaimed guitarist Rob Luft visits us twice, once with wonderful and creative drummer Corrie Dick, and also his own band in August, playing beautiful music from one of last year’s very best albums. We also feature two bands mixing composition and more explorative improvisation, Loz Speyer’s Inner Space, and drummer Johnny Hunter with his serene and highly original Pale Blue Dot project, which features a string quartet in the line-up. Finally the 10 piece Manchester Jazz Collective arrive with a bang in June, and look set to lift the roof off our intimate venue.

Best wishes,

Jez.

Inspired by a photograph taken by Voyager 1 in 1990 - the Earth as seen from a distance of 6 billion kms, less than 1 pixel in size, the music is in four movements, and seeks to provide the listener with the perspective and serenity that might be possible from the edge of the Solar System. The full line-up is Mark Hanslip (tenor sax), Gemma Bass (violin),  Aby Vulliamy (viola), Alice Eldridge (cello), Seth Bennett (double bass), Johnny Hunter (drums).

11th July 2018    Greg Abate with the Nicola Farnon Trio /  £9

A unique chance to catch them at our intimate venue in Sheffield.

Pianist/composer Stella Roberts brings some of the most in demand musicians from the vibrant, creative Birmingham music scene. Her music is inspired by the landscapes and animals from her Peak District childhood, thoughtful, passionate and laden with nostalgia, brought to life by Chris Young (Hansu Tori, Hans Koller) on alto sax, Richard Foote (Young Pilgrims) on trombone, Sean Gibbs (Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Calum Gourlay Big Band) on trumpet, Euan Palmer on drums, Stuart Barker (Clark Tracey, Laura Mvula, Chris Biscoe, Tony Kofi) on bass.

1st August 2018    Rob Luft / £8
Join us on the FINAL night of Rob Luft’s tour; this promises to be something special. An incredible guitarist and band playing compostions from one of last year’s very best albums, utterly distinctive, warmly lyrical, virtuosic yet so approachable, and with a rich emotional heart. You may have caught Rob recently in his wonderful duet at The Lescar with Alice Zawadzki. Rob Luft (guitar), Joe Wright (tenor saxophone), Joe Webb (hammond organ, piano and harmonium), Tom McCredie (bass), Corrie Dick (drums).

8th August 2018    Metamorphic / £8
When pianist and composer Laura Cole last brought her wonderfully expansive and beautifully arranged music to The Lescar it was one of our classic nights. With new music and a brilliant new album ‘The Two Fridas’, this is music with an intense collective heart, covering spoken word, improvisation and tightly arranged passages of music, played by some of the best improvising musicians in the UK. With Chris Williams (alto sax); John Martin (tenor/ soprano sax); Ollie Dover (bass clarinet); Kari Nergaard-Bleivik (vocals); Ruth Goller (electric/double bass); Seth Bennett (double bass); Johnny Hunter (drums); Laura Cole (piano). Ivor Surtees RIP

From Paul Bream

You may have already heard, but Ivor Surtees, who was the driving force behind Saltburn Jazz, has recently died. I'd heard that he was unwell but wasn't aware of quite how serious it was.

I was always impressed by the way that Ivor kept a jazz programme going in what can't have been an easy environment, especially over the past few years

Lets hope that our colleagues at Saltburn continue the Friday evening sessions at Saltburn Arts Centre that have been a feature of jazz in the North East

Tom Langham’s Hot Fingers at Dove Jazz

It will be a real delight to welcome back Tom Langham’s Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell back to Dove Jazz Club on the 19th May for the first of their two Gigs at the Club this year.

It was in 2007 that the musically accomplished, Buxton born Tom Langham first brought a band bearing the name of ‘Hot Fingers’ to Dove’s Village Hall. The other two musicians who accompanied Tom on that trip were Dany Blythe and Malcolm Stead who remain with him today. It was not until 2015 that the noted ‘Cotswold Nightingale,’ Emily Campbell joined the ranks of these three long standing chums. It was beneficial for these three lads to be introduced to someone from a more sophisticated and rural up market environment that aptly reflected their chosen residences in the heart of the Cotswolds.

It was Tom’s grandfather who inspired him to start playing the ukulele at an early age when his fingers became large enough and fit for purpose. He picked up the guitar, banjo and vocal skills very early on in his eventful musical journey along life’s highway. He can now proudly boast to be one of only a miniscule number of today’s performers of a similar ilk who have so deeply absorbed the panache of those early crooning pioneers such as Al Bowly and Bing Crossby. Malcolm Sked for his sins was a schoolboy euphonium player who joined the local brass band at the age of 13. He joined the Charleston Chasers at the age of 16, where he very soon came under the influence of an equally youthful Spats, for a 15 year stint on tuba and later on sousaphone. Of course Danny Blythe the other multi instrument proficient musician in this esteemed group has risen from humble beginnings as an Acupuncturist in leafy Cheltenham to join his good friend Tom on the front line of this unique musical troupe.

The same line-up will be making a return visit to us on the 17th November to provide further musical treats for the discerning ears of the Dove audience.

May Jazz in the North East

Denis Rollins- Darlington Jazz Festival 5 May

May offers great variety with North East gigs stretching from Berwick upon Tweed down to the Tees Delta Middlesbrough and way out west to Hexham in Northumberland.

Without doubt the big North East event is the eighth annual Darlington Jazz Festival (May 2-6 inc) Darlington Jazz Club promotes jazz gigs twice a month year round. Once a year things gear up for a long weekend festival, and this year, the eighth Darlington Jazz Festival stretches over five days. On May 2 the Darlington Big Band plays an opening concert at the Darlington and Simpson Rolling Mills Club, the following evening trumpeter Matt Roberts leads a workshop in Crown Street Library, and twenty four hours later local-lad-made-good Roberts plays his now annual sextet gig up above Voodoo Café on Skinnergate. On Friday evening gig is a highlight of the year, the room is always packed to the rafters to hear Robert’s A-list band blow the roof off the place. This year Roberts will be featuring the music of Kenny Dorham.

Saturday (May 5) and Sunday (6) are two days of non-stop jazz. For the first time the long-running Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club will be part of the festivities in presenting American pianist Jeff Barnhart with John Hallam, reeds alongside guitarist Keith Stephen and slap bass exponent Bruce Rollo. The gig starts at 12:30 prompt in St Augustine’s Parish Centre. Half an hour later three sets of top quality jazz gets under way around the corner in the Quakerhouse pub. The Graham Hardy Trio kicks-off at 1:00, Emma Fisk and James Birkett follow with their Joe Venuti-Eddie Lang show, and the Pocket Jazz Orchestra rounds-off the afternoon’s entertainment before everyone heads to the Central Hall in the Dolphin Centre for an evening with Alan Barnes. The ever-popular reedsman will be performing as guest soloist with Durham Alumni Big Band. This set piece occasion is always a sellout. To book your ticket visit: www.darlingtonjazzfestival.co.uk

The final day of the festival requires early risers to show stamina. Sunday, 10:15am, in Hash Bar, brunch and jazz starts with the accomplished guitar duo of Giles Strong and Mick Shoulder. A few hours later Paul Edis will be performing in Bondgate Methodist Church with Vocal Collective and, you’ve guessed, Alan Barnes! The Keys on Skinnergate brings the curtain down on a marvellous weekend of jazz with Dennis Rollins Funky Funk at six o’clock. As you move from venue to venue (they’re all in close proximity) you’re sure to chance upon jazz in the streets. The Darlington Jazz Festival will live up to its claim: Bringing jazz to the town centre.

The aforementioned Alan Barnes can be heard on Friday lunchtime (May 4) at the Lit & Phil up in Newcastle working as a duo with Paul Edis. A sell out is on the cards, it’s a pay on the door gig so best advice is arrive early – anytime from noon for a one o’clock start. Elsewhere there is much to look forward to. Guitarist Remi Harris finally makes it to Newcastle. A long overdue visit to the Jazz Café (Wed 2) sees Remi working in the company of regular trio band mates Caley Groves, rhythm guitar and Mike Green, bass. The Jazz Cafe’s May programme continues with a return visit by the highly regarded young guitarist John Bailey (May 4), Deep Cabaret (11), Alex Hitchcock (May 17), medical student Niffi Osiyemi sings (May 18), Lindsay Hannon and James Harrison (May 24) hold court and Shatner’s Bassoon entertain on May 25.

At the Sage Gateshead (May 3) Binker and Moses team up with NYC-based Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Tyehimba Jess. Binker Golding and Moses Boyd are a brilliant double act, this meeting of art forms should be worth catching. The Dun Cow pub in the leafy Newcastle suburb of Jesmond recently started a jazz night. Duos or trios alternate with jam sessions and late last month NYC-based Daryl Sherman dropped by. Clearly this new weekly (Wednesdays) venture is worth supporting, you never know who’ll turn up!

Joy Ellis returns to Newcastle (The Globe, May 12), the Break Out Brass Band, a new all-female ensemble, makes its debut at the Jazz Co-op’s Railway Street HQ (May 20) and on May 24 there is a rare appearance by the Gabriele Heller Trio. To end this month’s round-up let’s look north to Berwick for the always good-value- for-money Pasadena Roof Orchestra playing a matinee show (May 6) at the Maltings, south to Middlesbrough to highlight the unfortunate clash of two concerts on the same evening (May 19). Jools Holland’s R&B Orchestra (invariably there’s a bona fide jazz musician or two in the line-up) plays the recently refurbished Middlesbrough Town Hall and along the road at Middlesbrough Theatre the theatre musical comedy Crooners features an on-stage top notch ten piece jazz band. So, yet another busy month with a festival and dozens of gigs to get to across the North East.
