Tenor madness at Sproggits

Eliot Richards (picture- www.mariaalzamora.com)

From Harry Orme

SPROGGITS is back at our old stomping ground of Wharf Chambers, and this month we're incredibly excited to have Eliot Richards bringing his expertly-named sextet "How I Lost My Mind (and Other Adventures)". Inspired by late-period-Coltrane, expect (as the name would suggest) the soundtrack to someone going slowly insane. Lovely. Opening the night we'll have a free-up featuring some other great musicians - check the lineup below. Four of Leeds' heaviest tenor players in one room! It's tenor madness! Surely not to be missed. Also not to be missed is, as always, the Leeds jazz scene's greatest-worst raffle.

Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2016 line up

Terenece Blanchard

From festival director Ros Rigby

Gateshead International Jazz Festival is back - it runs from Friday 15 – Sunday 17 April 2016 at Sage Gateshead with a stellar line up of bands.

We’re proud to welcome back GRAMMY award-winning singer Gregory Porter after his sell out show last year to open this year’s festival. Saturday night’s stellar double bill opens with leading British saxophonist and festival favourite Courtney Pine with fellow Mercury nominee and MOBO award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman  In contrast, trumpeter, composer and former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers Terence Blanchard brings his new quintet, the E-Collective, in a powerful fusion of funk, R&B and rock.

Headlining Sunday night is American soul maestro Charles Bradley. His well-documented against-all-odds rise saw him transcend a bleak life on the streets before being discovered by Daptone Records. Other artists announced include award-winning singer-pianist Liane Carroll, described by Jamie Cullum as 'one of the greatest singers we have in this country'. Saxophonist John Surman emerged as part of a gifted generation of British jazz artists in the 60s – proving the age gap is no barrier to creativity, he is joined in a brand new quartet by the Alexander Hawkins Trio

British-Asian clarinettist and composer, Arun Ghosh, has been captivating audiences and critics alike with his trademark IndoJazz sound and Ibrahim Maalouf, widely regarded as one of the finest trumpeters of his generation, fusing pop, electro, soul, hip-hop with the music of his Lebanese roots

Café Society Swing features stellar vocalists and some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians in a show that tells the true story of the legendary New York nightclub which promoted racial equality and great music.  British jazz saxophonist Simon Spillett and his quartet will play a tribute to a revered British modern jazz star of the 50s and 60s, the late Tubby Hayes.

Fans of free jazz and improvisation will be treated to a solo performance from one of the most admired and influential saxophonists on the planet, Evan Parker. Award-winning British punk-jazz-funk specialists, WorldService Project bring to the festival high-octane experimental but accessible music – think Frank Zappa, Loose Tubes and Stravinsky, played loud.

As always the festival brings some of the newest and brightest lights on the international jazz scene to Gateshead. New York-based pianist and composer Kris Bowers is a leading voice in a vibrant new wave of genre bending jazz musicians. Saxophonist Phil Meadows is fast emerging as one of the UK’s most creative young jazz musicians. Airelle Besson’s sumptuous trumpet sound is catching the ears of listeners far beyond her native France. Malija is a brand new all-star trio, featuring saxophonist Mark Lockheart (Polar Bear), pianist Liam Noble and bassist Jasper Høiby (Phronesis). Pianist and composer Michel Reis has performed with Dave Holland, Joe Lovano and Esperanza Spalding. He shares a double bill with John Law, who brings all his varied influences in his new project, Congregation.

“This year’s Festival reflects the diversity of jazz in the 21st century, including well established names alongside some very exciting younger voices – we hope audiences will take the opportunity to find their own paths across the programme and try some new things as well as enjoying their favourites.”
Ros Rigby

Inner Space Music at Fusebox

Bill Chatwin writes

Fusebox's packed November programme will continue with Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music, who will be appearing at the Fox and Newt, Leeds on Thursday 26th November.

Inner Space Music
Loz Speyer – trumpet, flugelhorn
Chris Biscoe – alto sax, alto clarinet
Rachel Musson – tenor/soprano sax
Olie Brice – double bass
Gary Willcox – drums

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman, Inner Space Music takes improvisation into new territory, and frames it within a set of strongly melodic, catchy tunes with references going back into jazz history.

Compositions such as Rocket Science and From A to B to Infinity play around with a combination of fast, slow and free time, as a flexible framework for improvising, exploring the fine line between structure and freedom that is a central theme in the jazz tradition.

...and Five Animal Dances are musical sketches based on the Five Animals Qigong forms (Bird, Tiger, Deer, Bear and Monkey) - a Taoist practise of movement and meditation designed to connect us with the vitality and playfulness of the natural world. That vitality of spirit is essential in all good Jazz, the discipline of form and practise so well absorbed that it can be forgotten and condensed into the present moment.

"There was something utterly warm and personal about this gig, and very moving." - Mike Collins, jazzyblogman

"Serious fun of the first order – highly recommended!" - Mike Butler, Metro

"One of the happiest evenings I've heard in jazz for many a long night... Music as rare as this defies description. Go along and see them! Or get their forthcoming CD...” - Karl Dallas, the Morning Star

“Inner Space Music, led by trumpeter Loz Speyer played a cracking set showcasing the consistently good catalogue he has been building for many years. With alto saxophonist Chris Biscoe in the front line, the band carried a strong Ornette-Don Cherry spirit but there was real personality in the writing.” Kevin Legendre, Jazzwise

“Wonderfully vigorous, sprightly music, packed with unexpected felicities of texture and timbre, and infused with bustling, fiercely interactive energy. Recommended.” Chris Parker
COMPILATION VIDEO – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbi_XBQIqJo

Inner Space Music are bringing such a full catalogue that they have requested no support and so the music will be starting at 8.30 as usual and after a short break ISM will be back for a second session.
See you there."

Maciek Pysz is an outstanding guitarist and composer: “the most melodic and innovative guitarists I’ve heard for many a year” says Lance Liddle of Bebop Spoken Here.  And the other members of the trio, Yuri Goloubev on double bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums, are also international musicians of the highest calibre.

Their appearance at the Globe on Saturday 21 November is a major coup for Jazz.Coop and we are hoping for a packed house. Tickets are £12 (and Jazz.Coop members can bring a guest for £7).

International jazz touring success for the North

Ingrid Jensen -touring in May 2016

The Northern Voluntary Jazz Promoters Network (NORVOL JAZZ) in partnership with Apollo Jazz Network have been awarded over £32,000 by Arts Council England to establish a touring network for live jazz and to present three tours featuring world-class international musicians.

Through the development of a touring infrastructure, northern jazz clubs clubs will host tour dates and workshops and Apollo Jazz Network, run by trumpeter Kim Macari, will manage the project. The first tour will take place in May 2016 and will feature Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

"I am delighted to receive this support from Arts Council England. It has been over a year of development and discussion for a project which is ambitious and large-scale and it’s fantastic that we are now able to roll it out.

The project is going to benefit audiences, promoters and musicians in a direct way. We’ll have three featured artists from the USA collaborating with UK musicians to create new work and then touring it across the region, leading workshops and masterclasses along the way. We’re also going to be live-streaming gigs, allowing as many people as possible the opportunity to be involved. Getting a chance to see groups like this perform in more intimate venues is going to be extraordinary.

This focus on collaboration – artistic collaboration as well as partnering with organisations – is what Apollo Jazz Network has always been about. Kim Macari, Project Director

"We’re really pleased at this news. It is a vindication of what the 30 Northern jazz clubs and festival promoters in the network have been aiming to do. The international touring programme will enable volunteer run jazz clubs – the backbone of the jazz scene in the North – to show off some of the best jazz artists in the world to their audiences". –
Steve Crocker, NorvolJazz

International stars in Sheffield

From Neil Pepper

"International stars from the USA this week play at Millennium Hall in Sheffield on Friday 13th November as Sheffield Jazz welcome the: New York Standards quartet - David Berkman: piano; Tim Armacost: saxophones; Michael Janisch: bass; Gene Jackson: drums

This New York-based unit have developed a near telepathic relationship within the tradition of the standard jazz repertoire, taking standard songs as a starting point for development with freedom and room for interpretation.

As John Fordham in The Guardian’s glowing, four-star review of their recent tour comments:
“a group devoted to radical reinvention of famous songs ... this vivacious foursome delightedly cherish the originals while brusquely deconstructing their harmonies and tweaking their melodies... This is a collective class act.” ****

Joe Morris Quartet play Newcastle

Joe Morris Quartet

Paul Bream has been in touch

"We've now got an absolute cracker of a gig booked for the Sunday night 6 December - the only UK appearance by the Joe Morris Quartet (Joe on guitar, Mat Maneri viola, Chris Lightcap bass, Gerald Cleaver drums). The band is on a European tour and is literally flying to Newcastle from the Netherlands and then flying back to Germany.

I can't resist feeling pretty chuffed about this - it seems that Jazz North East's reputation is so high that Joe insisted he wanted a Newcastle gig. Here are the details:

Jazz North East presents ‘On The Outside’, with

Spats at the Spa (and more...)

“Spats” Langham 28 November
Les Brown writes... "Dear Jazzers

Please find attached the programme to the end of the year. One or two rather special evenings coming up in November which we know you'll really enjoy.

We've had some first class evenings in the past month - the John Hallam/Jamie Brownfield session was especially well received and we have invited them back next year; also an excellent session of New Orleans music last Saturday with our old friend Brian Carrick.

The Rugby World Cup and probably other seasonal factors have caused our attendances to fluctuate rather more than usual at this time of the year, so we are now hoping with New Zealand having carried off the honours that numbers attending will return to normal.

A word about the new Café Bar in the Village. Stew and Oyster has opened for business opposite the Costcutter and adjacent to the Village car park. Very reasonably priced tasty meals served before "Jazz time" as you can see from the Menu. Link below. The only problem may be that you can't book - you just turn up. Lots of favourable comments already.  http://stewandoyster.com/locations/boston-spa/

Looking forward to seeing you all in November and December"

November 2015
7th – Maine Street Jazzmen – first class traditional jazz played with verve and enthusiasm by this well respected band from the North East. The added bonus is always the addition of several R & B numbers on the harmonica from leader and trombonist, Herbie Hudson.
14th – Swing Commanders – a much anticipated appearance by this multi – instrumentalist and versatile group performing an exciting mix of 1940’s classics, boogie woogie, swing, jump jive and more. Energetic showmanship coupled with sophisticated vocal blend. £10
21st – Merseysippi Jazz Band – founded in 1948 and still going strong. One of, if not the “legend” jazz band from the North of England ever since. Until recently, a two trumpet front line in the style of the famous Lou Watters’ Yerba Buena band re-creating the music of King Oliver and Louis. Happy sounds to keep your feet tapping.
28th – Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell – a truly class act led by our number one guitar/banjo player “Spats” Langham. The hot jazz sounds of the 20s and 30s played acoustically and interspersed by wonderfully evocative vocals from Emily. Not to be missed. £10

December 2015
5th – Café Society – a long overdue return by this “off the wall” cabaret quartet featuring the outrageous Anthony Mason in his “Noel Coward” role with banjo and ukulele plus the undoubted talents of Willie Entwistle of Temperance Seven fame on reeds, Andy Henderson on cornet and Colin Turner on tuba.
12th – Sorry – No Jazz
19th – Christmas Party Night with the Harlem Hot Stompers – the last opportunity to clap your hands and stomp your feet in 2015. Yes – it’s Christmas Party time again with its traditional festive atmosphere, nibbles, mince pies, shortbread and the special raffle. And the whole fun filled celebration driven along at a cracking pace by the energetic Stompers. £10

Jazz in the Spa – Village Hall, High Street Boston Spa, Leeds LS23 6AA. Weekly Live Traditional/Mainstream Jazz. 8.00.pm
