Inner Space Music at Fusebox

Bill Chatwin writes

Fusebox's packed November programme will continue with Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music, who will be appearing at the Fox and Newt, Leeds on Thursday 26th November.

Inner Space Music
Loz Speyer – trumpet, flugelhorn
Chris Biscoe – alto sax, alto clarinet
Rachel Musson – tenor/soprano sax
Olie Brice – double bass
Gary Willcox – drums

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman, Inner Space Music takes improvisation into new territory, and frames it within a set of strongly melodic, catchy tunes with references going back into jazz history.

Compositions such as Rocket Science and From A to B to Infinity play around with a combination of fast, slow and free time, as a flexible framework for improvising, exploring the fine line between structure and freedom that is a central theme in the jazz tradition.

...and Five Animal Dances are musical sketches based on the Five Animals Qigong forms (Bird, Tiger, Deer, Bear and Monkey) - a Taoist practise of movement and meditation designed to connect us with the vitality and playfulness of the natural world. That vitality of spirit is essential in all good Jazz, the discipline of form and practise so well absorbed that it can be forgotten and condensed into the present moment.

"There was something utterly warm and personal about this gig, and very moving." - Mike Collins, jazzyblogman

"Serious fun of the first order – highly recommended!" - Mike Butler, Metro

"One of the happiest evenings I've heard in jazz for many a long night... Music as rare as this defies description. Go along and see them! Or get their forthcoming CD...” - Karl Dallas, the Morning Star

“Inner Space Music, led by trumpeter Loz Speyer played a cracking set showcasing the consistently good catalogue he has been building for many years. With alto saxophonist Chris Biscoe in the front line, the band carried a strong Ornette-Don Cherry spirit but there was real personality in the writing.” Kevin Legendre, Jazzwise

“Wonderfully vigorous, sprightly music, packed with unexpected felicities of texture and timbre, and infused with bustling, fiercely interactive energy. Recommended.” Chris Parker

Inner Space Music are bringing such a full catalogue that they have requested no support and so the music will be starting at 8.30 as usual and after a short break ISM will be back for a second session.
See you there."
