It's the people's jazz vote!

Just a couple of days left to vote for your favourite club, festival, artist, album etc in the UK's most respected jazz awards the UK Partliamentary Jazz Awards 2019.

This isn't a corporate run competition or or thinly veiled advertising campaign, this is where the jazz community has a chance to reflect and respond to what they've heard and experienced at real jazz events throughout the UK this year.

So - it's the people's jazz vote! Even if your vote is for an unknown act or a small club, it will still be registered and it will still matter. They won't win without you! Here's the link

Kevin Holbrough's debut album released

On 29th of May, 2019, respected Leeds based jazz trombonist and educator, Kevin Holbrough releases his debut album on New Jazz Records, Influences. This album features leading British jazz artists pianist Dave Newton, drummer Sebastian De Krom and bassist Zoltan Dekany.

The recording pays homage to the greats, with a mixture of original compositions, arrangements from the great American Songbook and the music of JJ Johnson whose melodic improvisation and tone quality have been a constant influence on Kevins playing. Alongside his professional playing career Kevin is currently a senior lecturer of jazz trombone at Leeds College of Music and a Michael Rath artist.

Within the jazz field Kevin is noted for his unique style, sound and creativity, a professional  trombonist of over twenty years with an ever expanding CV both in the jazz and commercial field he has performed and toured at theatres, festivals and jazz festivals throughout Europe and the UK with numerous shows, sessions, groups and artists such as The Mingus Big Band, Dennis Rollins, Gordon Goodwin, Eric Marienthal, John Labarbera, Mark Nightingale and many more.

June Is Bustin' Out in Liverpool

'June Is Bustin' Out All Over' goes the song! And there's certainly plenty happening this particular month (which by the way is named after the Roman Goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter, but of course you knew that already)!

It's the month with the longest daylight hours - hopefully most of them sun filled! And The Summer Solstice is not too far away.

It's also Caribbean Heritage month AND African-American Music month !

Which brings us to the subject of Jazz and our own in house programme of musical 'goodies'.

We can guarantee to put a 'Spring' in your Step and some 'Summer' in your Soul with our bumper bundle of Jazz delights.We kick off at the Jacaranda Club on the 4th and  we're very pleased to welcome Clube De Choro. Clube de Choro bring the vibrant form of Brazilian Choro music to the Liverpool music scene and are building a strong following and interest for this long forgotten music within the UK

They're followed at Phase One on the 11th of June by award-winning saxophonist Alex Hitchcock and his quintet. The quintet features five of the most creative rising stars of the UK's jazz scene.

On the 18th, Parrjazz presents Miguel Gorodi Nonet, made of up some of the UK's most sought-after jazz musicians. Including: Dave Hamblett (drums), Conor Chaplin (drums), Gareth Lockrane (flutes). We are also super excited to feature our first 'late show' starting at 11pm with local fusion legends The Blurred Sun Band

Which brings us to our Phase One June closer and we're going out with a bang! Mike Smith, his diverse and wide ranging experience have given him kudos amongst his peers and he has become one of the most sought after sax players in the area.

All Phase One events have free entry before 9pm then are £3 afterwards with a chance to win a vinyl of your choice. NUS card holders get free entry.

We're delighted to announce the 2nd annual jazz day taking place in Chapel Allerton on Saturday 8th June from 1pm until 7pm in the car park at the Snooker Club on Town Street LS74NB.

The club are excellent hosts and provide a well stocked bar and rest room facilities.

We are thrilled to have such fine Jazz  artists on our  line-up this year, there truly is something for everyone plus the addition of an Art auction by the kind people of Inkwell, A fantastic food stand by celebrated foodies Chip & Ting, a Craft stall and plenty of great Raffle prizes.

All we need is the sun to shine and all you wonderful music lovers to come along and have a fantastic afternoon with us. We hope you can join us at this FREE community event. Help us to spread the word and tell your friends to come too.

Jazz North seeks a new artist to promote

Jazz North are looking for a new artist to showcase across the North

Applications are now open for the new round of the emerging artist scheme, Jazz North Introduces. Created to support artists in the first steps of their professional career, the scheme gives one exciting new ensemble their debut on the touring circuit. Alongside career development from Jazz North and mentoring from an established artist, the selected artist will benefit from paid showcase performance opportunities at jazz festivals across the north.

Jazz North will partner with six northern festival promoters to co-promote one performance at each festival over an 18-month period. These performances create showcase opportunities for the selected band and give the festivals the chance to programme the best emerging talent from the north of England.

Artists applying to the scheme must be in the early stages of their professional career and emerging onto the jazz scene. They will not have had significant recognition, performing, touring or festival exposure. For example, bands who apply to Jazz North Introduces may not have yet performed outside of their locale, may not have performed at a festival, or may not have completed their education or training.

Manchester Jazz Festival Gears Up

The full line-up for this year’s Manchester Jazz Festival has been announced with its new time slot of 23 to 27 May. While there’s fresh-faced talent aplenty, there are some big names in the mix too. These include former Miles Davis right-hand-man and bass hero Marcus Miller who plays music from his funk-fueled recent album, Laid Black, (Bridgwater Hall, 24 May). Leading UK names include saxophonist Tim Garland  and his chamber-jazz Weather Walker group (St Ann’s Church, 26 May); Julian Siegel Quartet and Malija – Mark Lockheart, Liam Noble and Jasper Høiby (The Whiskey Jar, 23 and 27 May) and electro-jazzers Roller Trio get busy on a double-bill with Werkha, (The Bread Shed, 26 May).

The festival’s topical ‘Celebrating Europe’ strand spotlights the likes of Italian bandleader/double-bassists Giulia Valle and Federica Michisanti, French electronica vocalist Leïla Martial (above left), Danish band Equilibrium and Turkish/Romanian duo Sanem Kalfa and George Dumitriu with concerts across the weekend. There’s also an explosion of new music from a dizzying array of adventurous home-grown jazz from the likes of the guitar-led Flying Machines; spiky proggers Taupe; boisterous brass groovers Young Pilgrims and cerebral drum’n’bass sounds from Trampette, among many others.

Running at venues across the city, the festival will be partnering with the Manchester Food & Drink Festival for the first time, with a wide variety of food stalls around the festival hub at St Ann’s Square.

The Northern Jazz Promoters/Norvol network will be meeting up at Manchester too on the Saturday. Come and join us if you fancy meeting up -

Stand Out in Glasgow!

The Jazz Promotion Network conference "Stand Out" is part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival on Thurs 20 and Fri 21 June. Northern jazz promoters will be welcome to go along - it is free to members of the JPN network.

The timings are shaped so you can travel on Thursday morning and back on Friday night if you need to, or stay longer at the jazz festival if you can. Attached is an e-flyer giving a sense of the look and feel we’re going for. In addition to our distinctly Scottish flavour, we have a range of international guests - including Carine Zuber (Moods Jazz Club/ Switzerland), Ikaros van Duppen (injazz / Holland), Kelly Snook (Aerospace Engineer and Music Producer / US), Stephanie Toure (Banlieues Bleues / France) - and major UK and Irish organisations such as Musicians Union, PRSF, Creative Scotland, Arts Council Northern Ireland and Arts Council England. The full programme will be released later this month, as will details of our bursary scheme to help support delegate’s costs, but places can be booked now. There are currently good prices for trains and flights to Glasgow; Air BnB is also offering some great accommodation options if you like that sort of thing. Free places are available if you are a JPN member.
