Chris DeSaram resigns

Chris Desaram, the promoter for Wakefield Jazz and chair of the NorVol jazz network has decided to resign his posts for health reasons.

We all wish Chris well in facing his challenges. I'm sure you will join me in thanking him for the tremendous job he has done in promoting jazz in this area with such great energy and enthusiasm. He has been an inspiration and support for us all.

Jazz nights at Boston Spa

July 14th – Stephanie Trick + Paolo Alderighi – once again, we are delighted to join in the festivities as part of the Boston Spa Festival Weekend by presenting Stephanie & Paolo from the USA. Two young musicians of outstanding talent playing singly and duets in the ‘Harlem Stride’ piano style. Think Fats Waller and, latterly, Jeff Barnhart. 28th – Keith Nichols + John Hallam + Graham Smith – the Blue Three – the rearranged session following the weather cancellation in March. It’s a first appearance in Boston Spa for Keith – one of the UK’s most respected musicians and an exceptional pianist. Here he joins forces with our favourite reeds player, John Hallam to provide an evening of outstanding classical jazz. This will certainly be an evening to remember.

4th – Savannah Jazz Band – Yorkshire’s much travelled premier jazz band back in its home territory to entertain us with its customary blend of driving Traditional/New Orleans style jazz coupled with a good measure of rhythm and blues. Always a lively session with a decidedly humorous tinge.

18th – Maine Street Jazzmen – and just to keep you all in a jolly, holiday mood, we have the highly respected Jazzmen from the North East with their inimitable blend of fast moving Traditional jazz interspersed with some rousing harmonica numbers from leader Herbie Hudson. Definitely one of the best groups on the circuit.

25th – Jeff Barnhart and “Spats” Langham – Yes – it’s Mr Barnhart and Mr Langham together again at your request following the memorable evening’s entertainment last year. Our two virtuosos on stride piano and on guitar, banjo and ukulele with the perfect melange of musical standards, memories and anecdotes. Just be there!

JazzLeeds Festival at the airport - and the railway station!

For a new jazz festival it is important to get some exposure just so people know you are on the scene! So JazzLeeds festival are really pleased they have been able to exhibit the new JazzLeeds festival 19-24th July to arrivals at the city's airport. The commuters to Leeds will also get their chance to be serenaded on Wed 18th July too at Leeds Station - the day before the Festival starts.

Some encouraging signs - the jazz play about the 1950's Leeds Jazz Club Studio 20 "New Briggate Blues" has just sold out at the Carriageworks and so the festival are putting on an afternoon matinee the same day so as not to disappoint people. The other two Leeds-specific jazz events are selling well too - the Delights of the Duke with Alan Barnes all star Ellingtonians about the meeting between the Queen and Duke Ellington 60 years ago in the city - and as a result of which he wrote the Queen's Suite and Celebrating Xero Slingsby - a tribute to the Leeds punk jazz saxman curated by Sally Coe and featuring the Shuffledemons from Canada and Den Hoed from Belgium. Best but tickets in advance for those!

Then there are the marquee names not to miss - international stars like singer Ian Shaw, saxman Soweto Kinch, womens band Nerija, US saxman Greg Abate and Chris Bachelor's eclectic "Pigfoot" will all be making appearances during the six days.

Lots of fun in the city centre too with "Busk Stops" on Friday and Sat 20th and 21st organised by saxwoman Jemma Freese in Lands Lane in the City Centre, and the "Otley Jazz Run" on Sat 21st with street band Bassa Bassa visiting all the jazz clubs between Headingley and the City Centre, and two days of jazz in Millennium  Square featuring popular Leeds based swing dance, big bands, community and school groups, blues and salsa as well as jazz workshops and improvisation chamber people can join in with.

A special festival feature is "Fusebox presents" on Sunday 22 July put together by Laura Cole many highly respected improvisers and composers with a focus on the exploration of interactive, experimental improvisation and composition in performance at Leeds College of Music. The afternoon programme 1-5pm features the improvising trio Bennett/Murray/Vuillamy, with Seth Bennett (double bass), George Murray (trombone) and Aby Vulliamy (viola); saxophonist James Mainwaring (Roller Trio) in an improvised electronics/sax solo set; the Norwegian folk/jazz vocal trio Røyst, with vocalists Kari Nergaard Bleivik, Cecilie Maria Pauline Giskemo and Maria Jardardottir; double bassist Dave Kane in a duo set of compositions/improvisations with trumpeter Alex Bonney; and the improvising trio Hiby/Bardon/Hession, with Hans Peter Hiby (saxophones), Michael Bardon(double bass) and Paul Hession (drums). The evening programme (7-10pm) will feature renowned improviser/composer Matthew Bourne in a solo piano set, and the fiery improvising quintet (matthewbourne.com) and Shatner’s Bassoon, with Michael Bardon on bass/electronics, Oliver Dover on sax/clarinet, Joost Hendrickx on drums/electronics, Johnny Richards on keys/electronics, and Craig Scott on guitar/electronics.

And of course there will be a Festival Jam session - at the Domino club on Central Arcade from Midnight on Saturday evening hosted by Leeds saxman Ben Powling - who will be there from the festival we wonder?

All the concerts will be Live Painted by jazz painter Gina Southgate too.

The Festival launch is at Seven Arts this Thursday 19 July with Leeds favourite youth band - Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra and then rolls out to the Wardrobe, Leeds College of Music, Millennium Square and the Carriage-works. The festival website with details is here www.jazzleedsfestival.co.uk

We`re promised "Foot tapping swing and jazz from this All Star Band"; I hope you are looking forward to this as much as the band tell me they are.

This is one vocal Jazz gig you do not want to miss, as we entice Sara Dowling up from London where she has been captivating audiences. Surely one of the most gifted Jazz singers in the UK, Sara brings a deep knowledge and musical history to her mesmerising interpretations.

Gifted with immensely emotional vocals, her influences are wide and far-reaching. Born from an Irish father and Arabic mother, she was surrounded by the turning records of her father’s jazz collection and the chant like voice of Lebanese singer Fairuz and Umm Kalthoum blaring out of her mother’s radio.

Now one of the U.K’s leading jazz vocalist, she is a regular performer at London’s prestigious Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club and the 606 Jazz Club.

Sara’s album From Shadows Into Light received five star review from Jazz Journal who said  “A vocal with timeless quality” ,

Mojo magazine wrote “Enigmatic, beguiling and intensely musical”

and composer/Arranger Guy Barker wrote,
"Her voice has all the qualities that you find in the great singers"

Fusebox presents - improvisers and composers @Jazz Leeds Festival

Fusebox has been at the centre of the Northern free improvisational scene. Founded originally by Dave Hatfield and LIMA, it spawned bands like Trio VD with a Christophe de Bézenac, Chris Bussey  and Chris Sharkey. Barry Cooper was another key figure with the Termite Club at the Adelphi and the Fenton pubs. The scene today is as active as ever at venues like the New Brunswick and Wharf  Chambers in Leeds.

Pianist Laura Cole has curated two exciting sessions during the Jazzleeds Festival featuring highly respected improvisers and composers from Leeds/West Yorkshire, with a focus on the exploration of interactive, experimental improvisation and composition in performance. 

On Sunday 23 July 1-5.30pm the afternoon programme will feature the improvising trio Bennett/Murray/Vuillamy, with Seth Bennett (double bass), George Murray (trombone) and Aby Vuillamy (viola); saxophonist James Mainwaring (Roller Trio) in an improvised electronics/sax solo set; the Norwegian folk/jazz vocal trio Røyst with vocalists Kari Nergaard-Bleivik, Cecilie Giskemo and Maria Jardardottir; double bassist Dave Kane in a duo set of compositions/ improvisations with trumpeter Alex Bonney; and the improvising trio Hiby/Bardon/Hession, with Hans-Peter Hiby (saxophones), Michael Bardon (double bass) and Paul Hession (drums). 

Sunday evening 7.30-10pm has the contrasting pairing of renowned improviser/composer Matthew Bourne in a solo grand piano, with the fiery improvising quintet of Shatner's Bassoon, with Michael Bardon on bass/electronics, Ollie Dover on sax/clarinet, Joost Hendrickx on drums/electronics, Johnny Richards on keys/electronics, and Craig Scott on guitar/electronics

On July the 21st the Dove Jazz Club is greatly looking forward to presenting a band featuring the British Jazz Award winning trumpeter Enrico Tomasso and other musicians of a similar ilk. Enrico is an extremely popular figure on today’s jazz scene who possesses an exciting stage presence as well as a lively and infectious personality. He is widely admired for his versatility along with his ability to lay down a firm, incisive lead. It is always a rewarding pleasure for the Club to be able to include Paul Munnery and his trombone in one of our Saturday night line ups being noted as he is for his forthright and fiery delivery, he is always able to turn out a soulful ballad or blues when called upon to do so. The much in demand reeds man John Hallam who is no stranger to the Dove stage completes the front line. In an illustrious career this fluent and supremely sensitive performer has played with a great number of the finest musicians from both sides of the Atlantic.

The band possesses a formidable rhythm section powered by the superb drumming of the vastly experienced Nick Ward who laid down the rhythm with his first band in the early 80’s. The always distinguished looking Richard Vernon who plied his trade on string bass for many a year in the late, never to be forgotten ’Thomas Jefferson Burton’s Sporting House Quartet’ one who is still able to relate a ripping yarn or two from those days of prurience with the Master. Tom Langham will also feature in this compendious array on banjo and guitar and no doubt rendering the odd vocal. It affords him a rare opportunity to relive his formative years as a very young New Orleans style banjoist with the Hot Spa Stompers in fashionable Buxton. On paper we have a line up to die for and one we are sure will not disappoint along with our real ale that will be a most gratifying barrel of Speckled Hen.

We are having a month off in August returning on September 15th with T.J. Johnson’s Band.

Tonight 4 July we welcome ace tombonist Kev Holborough who'll be joining our resident trio of Mike, Bob & Tom.

Described by award winning fellow trombonist Dennis Rollins as ‘one of a breed of new jazz trombone players making waves on the jazz scene’ Kevin is both an immaculate lead player and fine soloist with a unique style, sound and creativity. Kevin recorded his debut album "Influences" with pianist Dave Newton in 2016, paying homage to the players who have influenced his own playing with a mixture of original compositions, arrangements from the great American Songbook and the music of American trombone legend JJ Johnson. Having performed at all the major UK jazz festivals and toured with an array of bill-topping acts, Kevin shows a reassuring and in-depth command of all jazz styles and uses these to create his own personal approach. In short, a class act, with the Mike Gordon trio.
