Fusebox presents - improvisers and composers @Jazz Leeds Festival

Fusebox has been at the centre of the Northern free improvisational scene. Founded originally by Dave Hatfield and LIMA, it spawned bands like Trio VD with a Christophe de Bézenac, Chris Bussey  and Chris Sharkey. Barry Cooper was another key figure with the Termite Club at the Adelphi and the Fenton pubs. The scene today is as active as ever at venues like the New Brunswick and Wharf  Chambers in Leeds.

Pianist Laura Cole has curated two exciting sessions during the Jazzleeds Festival featuring highly respected improvisers and composers from Leeds/West Yorkshire, with a focus on the exploration of interactive, experimental improvisation and composition in performance. 

On Sunday 23 July 1-5.30pm the afternoon programme will feature the improvising trio Bennett/Murray/Vuillamy, with Seth Bennett (double bass), George Murray (trombone) and Aby Vuillamy (viola); saxophonist James Mainwaring (Roller Trio) in an improvised electronics/sax solo set; the Norwegian folk/jazz vocal trio Røyst with vocalists Kari Nergaard-Bleivik, Cecilie Giskemo and Maria Jardardottir; double bassist Dave Kane in a duo set of compositions/ improvisations with trumpeter Alex Bonney; and the improvising trio Hiby/Bardon/Hession, with Hans-Peter Hiby (saxophones), Michael Bardon (double bass) and Paul Hession (drums). 

Sunday evening 7.30-10pm has the contrasting pairing of renowned improviser/composer Matthew Bourne in a solo grand piano, with the fiery improvising quintet of Shatner's Bassoon, with Michael Bardon on bass/electronics, Ollie Dover on sax/clarinet, Joost Hendrickx on drums/electronics, Johnny Richards on keys/electronics, and Craig Scott on guitar/electronics
