Jazz in the North East this March

Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston, Bridge Hotel Newcastle Mar 5th

From Russell Corbett

The first long weekend in March marks the return of the annual Great North Big Band Jazz Festival (Mar 3-5). For many years staged in Sunderland, this 2017 edition will take place in nearby Chester le Street. More than thirty big bands will converge on Park View Community Centre located just off Front Street.

Daniel John Martin returns to the region renewing acquaintance with Swing Manouche. The Paris-based violinist has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Mick Shoulder’s Hot Club-inspired outfit and a four-date mini tour is likely to attract full houses in County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. The dates for the diary – Jazz Café, Newcastle Mar 14th, Core Music, Hexham 15th, Empty Shop, Durham 16th, Traveller’s Rest, Darlington 17th. One week later – Mar 24 – Swing Manouche will be at Bishop Auckland Town Hall (minus Martin) to play a lunchtime café gig. An hors d’oeuvre to this feast of all things Manouche is an appearance at the Jazz Café by Emma Fisk’s superb Hot Club du Nord (Mar 3).

Leeds based guitarist Chris Sharkey gets into in ‘jazz guitar’ territory at two gigs on Mar 8th and Mar 22nd with Andy Champion (double bass) & Joost Hendrickx (drums) at the Jazz Cafe. Expect Stella By Starlight and Autumn Leaves rather than Trio VD and Shiver– no messing too much with those timeless tunes!

The Highlights Rural Touring scheme welcomes guitarist Pat McCarthy to the north east during the month. The McCarthy tour bus will be setting the Sat Nav for DH8 9NL and DL12 0TX on Mar 10th at Edmundbyers Village Hall and Mar 12th at Newbiggin in Teesdale. McCarthy’s four-piece band will return to the region in April. Jazz North East presents the veteran duo of Trevor Watts (reeds) and pianist Veryan Weston at Newcastle’s Bridge Hotel (Mar 5) in a double bill with bass clarinetist Chris Cundy. Later in the month (Mar 17) JNE co-promotes with Newcastle’s Jazz Café a Northern Line gig featuring Tom Riviere’s Family Band, and to see out the month (Mar 28), JNE’s Schmazz programming strand presents Jonathan Silk’s Fragment Quartet in the Jazz Café’s first floor space.

The Newcastle Jazz Co-op’s enterprising booking of the Blind Monk Trio deserves a good turn-out. Saturday 4th is the date – put it in the diary now. Across the Tyne at the Black Bull, Blaydon, Dean Stockdale will be playing Oscar Peterson, standards and originals on Mar 19th. Stockdale’s fellow pianist Dougie Pugh will be playing familiar standards at Darlington Jazz Club’s bi-monthly concert on Sunday 26. It’s a six o’clock start in the Quakerhouse, so don’t be caught out!

Stockton’s Georgian Theatre, hidden away in Green Dragon Yard, presents a rare jazz gig on Mar 17. If the dynamic James Taylor Quartet doesn’t draw a crowd, nothing will. One event guaranteed to attract a full house is ‘Swing, Strings and Sir Tom’ at the Gala Theatre on Mar 10. Quite what the evening will offer is another matter as this concert is a meeting of the Durham University Big Band, the string section of Durham University Orchestral Society and operatic baritone Sir Thomas Allen!

Two lunchtime concerts in Newcastle will do good business. At King’s Hall, Newcastle University, a three line whip ensures diffident music students get out of bed in time to attend a regular series of free admission, on campus, concerts. On March 23rd at ten minutes past one (Wakey, Wakey!) the trio of Faye MacCalman (reeds), John Pope (bass) and drummer Christian Alderson – collectively Archipelago – will perform a selection of free jazz/composed pieces. On the last day of the month the trio Triptych will perform at the Lit and Phil (one o’clock). Pianist Paul Edis, bassist Paul Susans and drummer Rob Walker will be performing a set of original material.

Finally, this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival is almost upon us. The three-day festival at Sage Gateshead (March 31-April 2) has much to offer. More on this next month, suffice to say, the opening evening (Friday 31) includes Clare Teal with Guy Barker leading an all star big band, Laura Jurd’s Dinosaur, Daniel Herskedal and Binker and Moses. A photographic exhibition looking at the career of Misha Mengelberg will run at Sage Gateshead from March 13 to April 14.

Sun Ra Arkestra play Leeds Wardrobe

From Leeds Inspired

Operating under the direction of saxophonist Marshall Allen - who celebrated his 90th year in 2014. With such a massive, joyous songbook and the kind of well organised chaos that sees their legendary 3 hour sets move deftly between rolling grooves, sing-along chants and atonal blasts of mischievous brass, the Arkestra remain one of the most unmissable live acts today.

“By the time that the show winds to a close, the audience joining in call-and-response style, The Arkestra snaking through the audience in their traditional procession, honking, clapping, chanting and leading the way along the path that leads to the stars, the roof has lifted off Oto. During the band’s first decade, in response to a criticism that Sun Ra was “too far out”, that other legend of the piano, Thelonious Monk, famously replied, “Yeah, but it swings.” Even a half century later, how right he was.” – David Solomons, Freq, review of the Sun Ra Arkestra at Cafe OTO, 2013.

Sun Ra was one of the greatest and least known jazz artists of the last four decades, whose influence on diverse musicians is little known to the general public. A pianist and band leader, his style ranged from retro swing to avant free, and often in the same piece. His band could play a swinging Gershwin tune and almost imperceptibly soar into their free cosmic equational tones as if they possessed a single mind.

Ra was a keyboard improviser of great originality, but his foremost talent was for inspiring and teaching creative musicians to improvise freely but together. This tension between freedom and coherence was something he explored with abundant energy and skill.

Sun Ra died in 1993. The Arkestra performs today, under the direction of alto saxophonist Marshall Allen.

Kamasi Washington in Leeds

From Sarah Ashford Brown

Epic’ is the one word to describe Kamasi Washington. And it isn’t only because it is the name of his 2015 album. If you don’t know what to expect, you won’t be disappointed, Washington is known for his great live shows so you will have to prepare yourself to handle the taste of Jazz turned up to 11, with a big shot of funk in it.

We can expect the gig to be completely sold out, with the tickets on sale this Friday for July the first. In fact, Kamasi Washington has already played on ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ with Kendrick Lamar, and is part of the Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder record label, which means that, if you attend the gig, the audience surrounding you will be a mix of Jazzers and hip hop fans.

The 8 member group constituted of two drum kits, keys, vocals, double bass, trombone, saxophone, and, his dad, so you can expect a big sound. Let’s be honest you know it’s going to be good when your dad is in your band.

Shobaleader One and Gogo Penguin headline GatesheadIJF17

Squarepusher’s live band Shobaleader One are playing a one-off, not to be missed double headliner with GoGo Penguin at Gateshead International Jazz Festival on Saturday 1 April.

Shobaleader One are Squarepusher’s extraordinary live band. Featuring bandleader Squarepusher on bass, Strobe Nazard on keys, Arg Nution on guitar, and Company Laser on drums, Shobaleader One will perform songs from the Squarepusher catalogue including classics from albums Hard Normal Daddy and Music Is Rotted One Note. They release their much anticipated album Elektrac on 10 March on Warp Records which features the band’s versions of eleven Squarepusher classics.

Acoustic-electronica trio GoGo Penguin are one of the most exciting and in demand bands on the UK jazz scene. Their V2.0 album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and they have recently signed a multi-album deal with Blue Note Records. It puts them in a tiny elite of Brits – one that includes Stan Tracey, Andy Sheppard, Orphy Robinson, Us3 and Van Morrison – to have signed to the world’s greatest jazz label. Drawing on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, John Cage, Massive Attack and Aphex Twin they create a brave new sound all their own.

Also joining the festival line-up and following the Saturday headline concert is founding member of the acclaimed Los Angeles group, the West Coast Get Down and long time Kamasi Washington collaborator, Miles Mosley. Mosley is a true force on the upright bass, incorporating effects pedals, his bow, his vocals and a horn section for his one-of-a-kind forward learning solo projects. The release of his debut album Uprising coincides with his festival date - one of just a few UK stopovers on his first European tour.

Other festival highlights include pianist/composer Neil Cowley and his trio performing music from their latest album Spacebound Apes, celebrated Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stańko, Amsterdam’s ten-strong Instant Composers Pool Orchestra led by the iconic drummer Han Bennink, and the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars who provide a glimpse into the incredible history of Soho’s world famous jazz club.  Award winning singer and BBC Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal will also be celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and Peggy Lee with her 17 piece orchestra conducted by Guy Barker.

There’s a lot more to discover at this year’s festival including a Sunday night triple bill which charts a jazz journey from South and West Africa to Cuba with saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, award-winning bassist Richard Bona and fast-rising pianist Alfredo Rodriguez. There will also be performances from award winning trumpeter Laura Jurd, tuba virtuoso Daniel Herskedal, saxophonists Stan Sulzmann and Trish Clowes , pianist Nikki Iles, vocalist Georgia Mancio, pianist/composer Alan Broadbent, saxophone and drum duo Binker and Moses and electro-improv trio Strobes.

Jazz musician Kathy Dyson breaks the M.U. mould

Kathy Dyson stands for General Secretary of the Musicians’ Union the first and only woman ever to do so in the union’s 123 year history

Jazz guitarist, academic, composer and trade union activist Dr Kathy Dyson is standing for General Secretary of the Musicians’ Union in the upcoming election. She is the first and only woman ever to do so in the 123 year history of the union and is challenging current Assistant General Secretary Horace Trubridge for the post. Kathy is standing because she believes the union has to change in order to meet more effectively the unprecedented challenges we are now facing.

Kathy says: ‘I’m standing for a more feminist, inclusive and collaborative approach to working together, and for a decentralised union that fights more strongly for funding, musical work, and instrumental music education in all the regions.  We need to create a long-term policy and strategy for every area of music we cover as a guide for action. We must also involve members more fully in our collective endeavour.’

As a jazz musician and award-winning jazz educator, Kathy believes that organising initiatives, such as the Fair Trade Music campaign by the AFM in the States, will help to improve fees and generate better work for jazz musicians. Many jazz musicians also rely on instrumental teaching work, which is under threat from local authority and central government funding cuts.
Kathy says: ‘We can build on our existing work creating cooperatives with music teacher members. We can also help to improve fees, wages and conditions by focusing more resources on fighting funding cuts and working more collaboratively with regional arts organisations.’

For more information please contact Dr Kathy Dyson at: kathydyson175@gmail.com.

Refu-Jazz raises £1800!

Alex Podraza, Roz MacDonald and Steve Hanley at Refu-Jazz

From Lesley Jeffries - Jazz at Heart Leeds

Wow! What an incredible day we had -

  • £1800+ raised for six Leeds refugee charities (see below if you want to contribute)
  • approx 73 musicians playing their hearts out for free
  • at least 300 people dropping in and out to listen and contribute to the funds throughout the day
  • three workshops on voice, guitar and bass

If you weren't able to be there and want to contribute to the fund, please transfer to jazz-at-heart's bank account (40-27-16 91555162) and put Refu-jazz as your reference. It would be great to get up to the magic number of £2000! Thanks to those who have already done so:)

So - thanks are due to John Marley for his great idea, his scheduling (yes John - that was crucial!) and his chilled attitude which meant that I had an incredibly relaxed day! Thanks also to ALL the musicians who gave their time and talents in such a generous spirit and to HEART for making us welcome. And most of all thanks to the audience - for turning up and paying up! It's going to happen again - I already have people queuing up to play! But not for a while yet...

Meantime - a great gig at HEART on March 11th - Alison Rayner, supported by Abbie Finn. Both female-led bands - will be a great night in the week of International Women's Day!

Best wishes to you all

Brad Mehldau plays Howard Assembly Room in Leeds

Over the last two decades, pianist Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism, and pop allure. His unquestionable leadership across idioms has grown as he has transformed the paradigm of jazz and classical performance – performing both solo and with his long-standing trio (Larry Grenadier, bass and Jeff Ballard, drums).

Showcasing his diversity and undeniable voice, Mehldau has also had notable collaborations with Pat Metheny, Anne Sofie von Otter, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Renee Fleming, Britten Sinfonia, Kevin Hays, Jeremy Denk and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. With his rigorous intellect feeding an inspired range of expression and intensity, Mehldau leaves his worldwide audience eager for his next foray.

‘Inside the music of Brad Mehldau is a conflict among rock, jazz and classical personalities. Ultimately, though, the pianist has figured a way to integrate all three pretty seamlessly.’ (The Philadelphia Enquirer)

'FAB FEB!' at Liverpool's Parr Jazz

Andor Jensen 7 Feb
Hi ParrJazzers One And All !

Hope all well and recovered  from 'Post Festive Blues Syndrome' ! We reckon you should be well on your way now , especially after our bright and cheery January programme . And as a boost there's lots more 'melodic Medicine' on its way down here at Frederiks  -  and it'll be administered right through 'Fab Feb' by our wide variety of 'Harmonious Heros' to combat the forecast chilly weather! Likely to be wet much of the time too  -  so it's no surprise that in Old English , February was called "Solmonath' ! Meaning  "Mud Month" !

Anyway enough of that  -  let's bring on the healing feeling of  'Dr. Jaaazz'...!

We kick off the month on the 7th feb. with a rare visit from the 'Woodwind Whirlwind' himself Andor Jensen. Believe it or not, a dyed in the wool  born and bred Scouser  -  but of Norwegian heritage. Plays all the instruments in the woodwind family amazingly but specialises on Soprano & Tenor Sax.

The following week (14 Feb) another Saxophone Supremo  Mr. Andy Morel! Also plays Soprano  - and Alto but his speciality is 'The Beast' . Always a pleasure to hear the big brown & deep sound  of the Baritone when it's played by someone as good as Andy.  Oh... and he's a knock out 'bluesy' vocalist too !

The arrival of the 21st Feb heralds the arrival of our first 'chanteuse' of February. The wonderful Ms. Nicki Allan! Great singer !.... Great teacher too actually  -  In addition to her stage career she's the 'Jazz & Pop Vocal Coach' at The Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester .

To close out the month on 28 Feb, would you believe , yet another incredible sax player! And by the weirdest of coincidences one also of Norwegian extraction .  He's the improvising genius considered the walking yardstick of where all aspiring sax players aim to reach in the world of music   -  So it has to be the one and only Munch Manship !

Time to shut the medicine chest of Dr. Jazz at Frederiks for Feb.   -   recuperation complete ! But don't forget to check out our special 'ParrJazz Presents' events going on elsewhere in the area
Always tasty are the 'Saturday Sounds ' emanating from Ma Boyles on ...yes you've guessed it....Saturdays ! Evening sessions by the way  -  kick off any time after 8.

And also well worth looking out for are our occasional promotions slightly further afield. These usually feature international jazz artists together with the finest home grown burgeoning talent. The next one on the horizon  is the concert by Chris Potter & the Inner City Ensemble on 14th. April at Parr Hall Warrington.  Groovy stuff !

As always the  'Jazz Train' rolls on ....this time on into March where waiting at the stations along the way  are more  of the finest jazz talent the planet has to offer. A wonderful mixed bag  including Ben Crosland, Jon Wheatcroft , John Hallam and lots more. But be patient - the nitty gritty about them will be unveiled in the March edition of the "The ParrJazz Bugle". Meanwhile Keep the Faith  -  Keep Swingin'  & Keep Warm . And keep coming down to Fred's where no two Tuesdays are ever the same  - The essence of jazz I guess you could say !

From All Of Us @ ParrJazz .............We Love You Madly !
