New Jazz Collective in formation on Merseyside.

Kevin Lovelady writes - "I'd appreciate any help you can provide in spreading the word about a new musical initiative I'm hoping to bring to fruition in the coming months.

I am interested in hearing from seasoned musicians or beginners, musicologists and listeners who would be interested in meeting on a regular basis as part of a music collective where people can get together, exchange ideas, develop projects, form alliances, jam a little, bring in professional musicians/educators etc to run seminars etc - very much in the tradition of co-operation and the workshop ethos of the 60s.

The focus would be on Nu/Neo styles around Jazz, Brazilian, Soul & Funk and their crossover fusions etc.

I would like to get people to express interest and then arrange for an initial meeting to discuss the format and organisation of the collective.

December brings with it frivolity, seasonal cheer and a shop-’til-you-drop mentality. The tinsel will be everywhere, Santa hats obligatory…so, what to do? Bolt the door? Turn out the light? Or, take Rudolph by the antlers and embrace it – the spirit, that is, not Rudolph!

On the 1 Dec Durham’s Empty Shop will be full to capacity as Alter Ego play bebop and more. Up the road at Newcastle’s Jazz Café the Gerry Richardson Quartet will stoke the mid-winter Hammond fires. Saltburn’s Christmas party night (Dec 2) presents a return visit by the popular Dixieland outfit the Savannah Jazz Band.

A re-arranged gig by Lindsay Hannon (November’s date was cancelled) sees the ‘Plus’ at the Traveller’s Rest, Darlington (Dec 2) and on the same night, Jambone – Sage Gateshead’s youth big band –  will be going to church! The band has a gig at St James’ and St Basil’s Church in Fenham just out of Newcastle city centre.

Big band fans should put these dates in the diary…the Customs House Big Band plays a charity concert at North Shields’ Exchange (Dec 3) and three days later (Dec 6) makes a return visit to All Saints Church in the South Tyneside village of Cleadon. The amazing Tyne Valley Big Band and its junior ensembles will play an end of term concert (Dec 8) at Hexham HQ, the Phoenix Bar & Club on Chisholm Place (it’s an early start – 6:00pm). The indefatigable Chris Barber returns to Sage Gateshead (Dec 8) with his top class Big Chris Barber Band. Few tickets remain – telephone the ticket office on 0191 443 4661.

A three band extravaganza on Dec 11 (six o’clock start) at Darlington Market Place features the Durham Alumni Big Band and its development bands the Durham County Youth Big Band and the Little Big Band. The Pizza Express, Newcastle (Dec 12) will shoehorn the award winning Durham University Big Band into a corner and within a trombone slide’s length of your pizza. More big bands? Try Sage Gateshead (Dec 14) for the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band (performing in support of the jazz degree course), and the Durham University Big Band having a blast in their own Students’ Union (Dec 14). Arts Centre Washington (Dec 16) presents Cosyjo, the City of Sunderland junior big band and the Strictly Smokin’ guys have a two nighter at the Black Swan in Newcastle Arts Centre (Dec 16 & 17). Very few tickets remain for either night, you’d better be quick!

Newcastle City Hall is the place to be on Dec 20 and again on Dec 21 to party with Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Those Strictly Smokin’ guys aren’t finished yet…Hoochie Coochie (Dec 29) and a New Year’s Eve bash at Gateshead’s Prohibition Bar rounds off 2016 for the hardest working big band in the region. From the sublime to Glenn Miller – Major Miller, in the guise of Ray McVay, parachutes into Sage Gateshead for a matinee show on Dec 30. Don’t knock it, it’s great entertainment and they can play! Who said big bands are dead?!

Finally, in complete contrast, Jazz North East concludes it’s year long 50th anniversary celebrations with the debut performance of the Fluid Orchestra at the Black Swan on Dec 13. A hand-picked ensemble from across the northern region will be playing charts commissioned by the promoter in a salute to five decades of promotion on Tyneside. Here’s to the next half century!

Steel Pan meets Jazz

The last of our artist to appear in The Jazz Room this season will be the fabulous Pan Jumby.
Steel pan advocate Dudley Nesbitt is joined on stage by Richard Ormrod (saxes, clarinets, flutes & percussion), Barkley McKay (keyboard & guitar), Kenny Higgins (bass guitar) and Sam Hobbs on

The Spike Orchestra makes its HCMF debut with a big band realisation of John Zorn’s monumental and legendary Cerberus: Masada Book 2 project.  The music you will hear is drawn from John Zorn’s Masada Book 2 which comprises over 300 tunes composed in an intense three month period in downtown New York City in 2004. The subsequent recordings initiated by Zorn to date total 29 albums, of which ours is number 26. Cerebus is the first big band entry into the series and one of only a few from the scattered downtown diaspora working outside New York City.

Following his HCMF debut in 2014, performing alongside Evan Parker, Percy Pursglove returns to Huddersfield – joined by Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen – with the world premiere of  Gertrude Stein’s groundbreaking stream of consciousness work Tender Buttons: Objects, Food, Rooms I (1914) has been heralded as ‘a masterpiece of verbal cubism’. Her unique writing style challenges conventional alignments of words addressing instead their underlying sound and rhythm: ‘By departing from conventional meaning, grammar and syntax, she attempted to capture ‘moments of consciousness,’ independent of time and memory.’

This contemporary interpretation of Stein’s work is a cross-disciplinary symbiosis of composition and improvisation, setting her unorthodox text for a four piece vocal ensemble and improvisers.

Wakefield Jazz ~ December gigs

Wakefield Jazz has only two gigs in December 2016 – but what a pair of contrasting and exceptional gigs they are.

On Friday 2nd December Tony Kofi brings his new quartet paying homage to Ornette Coleman.     He’s joined in the front line by Byron Wallen on trumpet.   The regular pairing of Larry Bartley (bass) and Rod Youngs (drums) complete the band.    Tony’s time with the World Saxophone Quartet brought him to International recognition and he has actually played with Ornette during a period with Jamaladeen Tacuma.   All other band members are composers and band leaders in their own right.

Then we have our Christmas party on Friday 9th December – sorry, it has already sold out !   Why?     Well Claire Martin OBE has a following but when paired with Ray Gelato to sing the swing repertoire of the 30s and 40s it’s an irresistible combination for many.   To cap it all the rhythm section is the David Newton trio with Andy Cleyndert (bass) and Steve Brown (drums).

Since their debut performance in 2008, Alter Ego have entertained audiences at many North East jazz venues and festivals. The group draw much of their material from the rich catalogue of original compositions created by the likes of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Hank Mobley, and Miles Davis. The result is a stylistically varied programme including Up-tempo Swing, Hard Bop, Funk and Latin Jazz.

The group’s instrumentation allows for tightly structured arrangements, with harmonically rich ensemble passages, exciting rhythmic interplay and inventive improvised solos from all band members.

We're welcoming back the Durham University Jazz Society to host semi-regular Jazz Jams at HQ. They're free to attend and open to all.
 Format
There will be a house band all night who welcome anyone to get up with them or switch out the rhythm section. They play from the standard real book repertoire so bring music for anything non typical.
The jams run very informally with people welcome to come and go as they please. If you want to play or sing, just bring along an instrument and get up as and when you fancy playing.
It's a good place to work on improvisation or just listen to some great music.

Kim Macari and Paul Edis take five

Trumpeter Kim Macari and pianist Paul Edis are two Northern musicians among eight included in the this year's edition of jazz initiative "Take Five".

Organised by jazz promoters Serious, Take Five is aimed at giving talented young jazz artists the chance to take time out and develop their music and business.

The twelfth edition will run until the summer of 2017 and provide participants with one-to-one mentoring sessions to address their particular areas of need, as well a residential period for exploring areas such as composition, performance, communications, business infrastructure and strategic direction.

Vanessa Reed, PRS for Music Foundation chief executive, said: ‘Congratulations to the eight talented jazz musicians that have been selected for this year’s Take Five Edition XII.

‘It’s great to see another line-up of exceptional musicians being offered the opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other as they take their careers to the next level. I look forward to following the outcomes from the residency early next year.’

Previous recipients included Moses Boyd and Leeds's Chris Sharkey.

A panel of industry experts contributed to the selection process, taking into account the following considerations: creativity, future potential, style of music, range of influences, and distinctive contribution to the jazz community.

Jazzers in Clitheroe & Ribble Valley are delighted with their new opportunities for getting into jazz ; jazz on community radio, and weekly dinner jazz sessions compliment regular successes such as our annual festival.

‘Jazz of Ribble FM’, is presented by RVJ&B at 8pm Wed evenings on 106.7 FM or online via Tune In Radio. John presents familiar tunes, announces gigs, and poses quiz questions. At 9pm Gaz introduces contemporary jazz. By end November band director Paul Rigby will be introducing Big Bands Old & New.

Dinner Jazz:
RVJ&B programmes four regular venues for this using local bands. On Thursday 17th November we are trialling Bowland Brewery in  Clitheroe as a weekly lowcost jam session.

Influenced by the Miles Davis Second Great Quintet, Coltrane’s Classic Quartet and the Brian Blade Fellowship, this UK/US supergroup will cover a breadth of music in a high energy, ultra-expressive show. Playing newly-penned originals by Scottish born drummer Andrew Bain, this group will explore the connectivity of the above groups, alongside the lyricism of the Fellowship’s music. A very special Sunday gig for us - the Damon Brown Korean Trio  Sunday 27th November

Since the release of his 1998 debut album A Rhythm Indicative, Damon Brown has become one of the UK and Europe’s leading Jazz trumpet players and composers. Born in Manchester, he studied the trumpet at Leeds School of Music and at Guildhall School of Music in London.

Throughout his career Damon has played and recorded with many artists including Sting, Eric Clapton, Bjork, Paul Weller and The Specials to name a few. Damon has toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe and the Far East and continues to teach and perform in Europe, Russia and the Far East.

Damon brings his South Korean Trio to the Cinnamon Club. Joining Damon (trumpet and vocals), the trio is completed by Kang Woong (guitar) and Park JinKyo (double bass).

Previous UK appearances with his Korean trio include the Pizza Express Jazz Club, Ronnie Scott’s, and The London and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals.

NOVEMBER 9 Jamil Sheriff Quartet (pictured)
Pianist Jamil Sheriff is Head of Jazz at Leeds College of Music. He is known throughout the UK Jazz scene for his lyrical and rhythmic approach to original music, and this latest project is no exception.
The group features Josh Kemp, saxes, Dave Walsh, drums and Pete Turner, bass, and has been together since 2012. This tour is promoting their debut album 'Places Like This’, a collection of exciting music that shows off these extremely accomplished musicians. £7 (£6)

first album together. This evening they are playing music from their latest CD, Stardust, which features improvisations on ‘elegant old standards’. As a display of technical and mental agility these pieces verge on the stupendous, but they also have great charm. £8 (£7)

Wakefield Jazz November gigs

Wakefield Jazz has a set of 4 varied gigs on Fridays during November.  The versatile John Etheridge is joined by violinist Christian Garrick on 4th; a subset of Sweet Chorus they have more freedom to explore duets beyond the Grapelli / Reinhardt canon.  Always a popular pair  New young singer Lilli Unwin brings her band on 11th.  She features Matt Robinson (a Wakefield lad) on piano and we’re lucky she’ll be bringing him as he has gigs with almost every other band of that generation in London. Both have begun their careers by winning awards. Sadly Corrie Dick can’t make the gig and will be depped by Will Glaser on drums.   The monster tourer Nigel Price brings his guitar quartet with the Hammond B3 organ of Carlo de Wijs from Holland and Alex Garnett on tenor on 18th.   Then the powerful saxophonist Josh Kemp brings a quartet with Steve Fishwick (trumpet) joining him in the front line.  Top musicians Ross Stanley (organ) and Chris Higginbottom (drums) complete this band.

Kathryn Williams & Anthony Kerr at the Globe

Mercury nominated and critically acclaimed folk artist Kathryn Williams has teamed up with revered jazz musician and vibraphone player Anthony Kerr, to create a complete re-imagining of classic jazz standards. The new album 'Resonator' strips away the bombast of previous versions of much loved songs such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Stormy Weather", leaving them exposed and yearning – exuding a dream-like and hypnotic luminosity.

Kathryn and Anthony have revealed true beauty in these old songs, with their fragile delivery both vocally and instrumentally; Williams' signature vocals enriched by soft, lush vibraphones, distant jazz trumpet and double bass.

The pair were introduced six years ago through composer Kate St John, and Anthony went on to play on Kathryn's first release via One Little Indian, 'The Quickening'. They came up with an idea of re-working a collection of jazz standards, and began to put the wheels in motion – meeting up to demo ideas and recreate countless versions of the songs. In Kathryn's words: "I was imagining the songs as tired horses who had been whipped by big egos and we were taking them in, taking off their saddles and setting them free in a field."

Anthony Kerr said of the record: “These songs are often presented in a ‘big’ fashion - with the drama of a large ensemble (big band or orchestra perhaps). I wanted to hear these songs in a much more vulnerable and intimate setting. The songs of Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and the like form the backbone of the jazz tradition. We 'jazzers' like to play these tunes in a wide variety of styles and settings. The melodies and harmony is so strong that an infinite variety of possibilities presents itself when considering these songs. They don’t ever seem to get old.”

Kathryn isn't new to unique collaborations. The prolific musician has previously worked and toured with John Martyn, Chris Difford (Squeeze), Bombay Bicycle Club, David Gray, Ray Lamontagne, and made two further albums as a member of bands The Crayonettes and The Pond. However, she says that Anthony's knowledge of jazz is boundless in comparison to her own. Kathryn grew up listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker and Charlie Byrd, although she wouldn’t claim to be an aficionado of the genre. And this only serves to make these re-imagined songs more interesting than they ever could have been had we heard two masters of jazz re-write and perform them. Kathryn brings elegance and vulnerability to the record, searching for the heart of every song and laying it bare.

The Generation Big Band

Have you heard about the Generation Big Band? It is Leeds College of Music aim to bring together excellence across all generations of the Yorkshire jazz community.

The band will consist of alumni who are working professionally in the music business, existing LCoM conservatoire students, along with up and coming young musicians who show great potential.

Generation Big Band is a new and exciting project led by Mark Chandler at Leeds College of Music. The band will feature some of the current LCoM students and alumni and also 6 younger musicians. The idea is to bring together different generations of brilliant musicians to form one fantastic band. The fee for young musicians is £125.

LCoM are looking for six talented musicians up to the age of 18 to join this project.  We would expect to receive applications from students aged 14+, although if you are younger and of a high standard on your instrument, please do apply.

Auditions will be held on Saturday 26 November 2016 between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

Northern Line is back!

Northern jazz artists invited to apply for the 5th edition of Jazz North's innovative touring scheme northern line

Jazz North today opens the application portal for the latest roster of northern line – their flagship scheme for touring which gives promoters the opportunity to programme high quality artists with low financial risk.

Since its launch in 2013, northern line has featured 47 Ambassador Artists who have performed over 450 gigs with 150 promoters and partners across the north of England and beyond.

Selected by an independent panel of musicians, promoters and industry experts, artists recruited to the next round of northern line will benefit from subsidised performance fees, on-going professional development including a 1 day intensive induction and a high profile showcase appearance at Manchester Jazz Festival.

The newly recruited roster will be announced in the spring and will cover the touring period between September 1st 2017 and December 31st 2018.  The current touring roster of northern line artists are available for bookings with subsidised performance fees until 31st December 2017.
