The Dave O’Higgins Quartet follows on Wednesday 8th November.This quartet plays some of the most swinging music you will hear today. Straight ahead jazz firmly in the harmonic and melodic tradition, played by the finest UK-based jazz musicians at the peak of their distinguished careers. They will be playing a mixture of new originals and standards from the latest recording, “It’s Always 9.30 in Zog” (JVG Productions 2017) Geoff Gascoyne bass, Sebastiaan de Krom drums, Graham Harvey piano.

Ten young musicians wanted to work with Zoe Rahman

Band on the Wall and Brighter Sound have announced that pianist, composer and bandleader Zoe Rahman will lead their third Jazz Directors Series residency and tour from 15-22 October 2017.

Zoe has performed extensively around the world, has been a featured artist on numerous television and radio programmes, and is frequently invited to sit on high-profile panels – most notably the Mercury Music Prize, BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year and the Nottingham International Jazz Piano competition.

They are looking for ten young professional jazz musicians to form the Inner City Ensemble. Over one week this evolving group will rehearse and perform works composed and recorded by Rahman including new arrangements of some tunes from her most recent solo piano album Dreamland.

“I’m really looking forward to working with open-minded improvising artists who have a strong grounding in jazz, a deep sense of groove and who like to listen to a wide range of musical styles. There will be opportunities for all of the musicians to shine individually as well as contribute to the ensemble as a whole. Hopefully the project will be challenging, rewarding and above all fun for all of us.” – Zoe Rahman

For this residency and tour they are looking for a diverse range of emerging professional jazz musicians aged over 18 who play to a very high standard (graduate equivalent and above) with excellent improvisation and reading skills and who can reference drum&bass, afro-beat and township jazz among other styles.

Leeds gets two summer jazz festivals

It's like buses - none for ages then two come along at once! There are now two Jazz Festivals in Leeds to enjoy this summer both run by the new JazzLeeds network, both showing off the huge variety of jazz from the city.

Jazz Leeds Festival Millennium Square Thursday 3 August 
A new festival held in Millennium Square and the Carriageworks as part of this year's Leeds summer music events on Thursday 3 August.

Free events - early in the day there are free concerts in Millennium Square for JazzLeeds Fest 17 featuring 12-2pm Hyde Park Brass and The Big Easy then from 5-8.30pm  Slide Area,"Open Letter to Mingus", Tom Sharp's Jazz Orchestra 

Ticketed events - there is a jazz workshop in the afternoon if you want to learn to play jazz led by Dom Moore 2-4pm. Then who better to be the headline act at the JazzLeeds day of jazz than Snake Davis one of the most talented saxophonists in the music business today. Steve Mead's top tips at Manchester Jazz Festival

Steve Mead, mjf Artistic Director offers his top tips for those discovering jazz for the first time or for those feeling ‘spoilt for choice’ at the Manchester Jazz Festival (28 July - 6 August)

Riot Jazz Brass Band – energetic, fun, with an opening party vibe. This is music for dancing feet and dancing heads.

Afternoon Tea: Charlie Cooper Trio – a vintage soul songstress whose tuneful music makes for a classy all-round experience in the splendid surroundings of The Midland; a special treat for friends and family and a chance to see the musicians close-up.

Haggis Horns at Matt & Phreds – the classic jazz-club experience, with danceable soul, funk and rhythmic jazz in Manchester’s renowned jazz venue. Hot and sweaty and great fun!
At Band on The Wall – The African Salsa Orchestra; a foot-tapping Cuban salsa melting pot – try it for yourself in their African Salsa workshop beforehand (part of the ticket for this gig!).

The Breath: fast-rising Manchester band with players from the Cinematic Orchestra: folky songs and a big sound led by Rioghnach – the charismatic Irish vocalist who fronts the band.

The Improvisation Salon: your chance to improvise and/or play an instrument for the first time! Get to make music with friends and strangers and play xylophones, marimbas and tuned percussion. Anyone can do it!

Shri – Just a Vibration: a prize-winning, big-sounding, fun ‘Bombay mix’ of styles. Composer-producer, Shri  and his musicians are joined by seventeen members of the Hammonds Saltaire Brass Band to create music described by The Guardian as: “An entertainingly varied set that would make great film music.”

Mali Hayes: a young Mancunian vocalist on the free outdoor stage in Albert Square where you can relax with friends after work to soulful sounds and be the first to witness rising talent.

Zee Guveya and the Heritage Survival: dance the night away with easy Afro beats and lively rhythms – feel-good music with a warm and tropical vibe.

Clouds Harp Quartet: a rare chance to see 4 harps together: beautiful, enchanting sounds in the cool and calm setting of Central Library.

Baked à la Ska: another Manchester favourite – they turn the unlikeliest of pop tunes into a ska-jazz dance party; funny, foot-tapping and fab.

Horse Orchestra: from Copenhagen, these guys turn jazz on its head – anarchic and fun, superb instrumentalists but with a cheeky sideways glance across jazz, their theatrical antics will raise a smile and make you marvel at how they keep it all together.

Lucy Mae: on the free outdoor stage on our chill-out finale Sunday, Lucy is a relaxed but passionate singer-songwriter and perfect for afternoon easy-going beats. Songs that sound familiar but new at the same time.

Saxophone Massive open the Halifax Piece Hall

Andy Sheppard’s Saxophone Massive is always an epic performance. A huge number of sax players from across the region will mark the reopening of The Halifax Piece Hall at a free event on 18 August 2017

Led by world-renowned jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard, the big band will perform an original composition amongst the colonnaded galleries of our Georgian building, filling the whole space with music and celebration.

An ECM recording artist, bandleader and composer, Andy Sheppard is one of Europe’s leading saxophonists and one of a very few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene.

An international phenomenon, Saxophone Massive has been performed in cities across Europe including in the UK, France and Norway and is now commissioned for Halifax.

Wigan Jazz Festival hosts the Norvoljazz July network

Northern Jazz promoters held their latest Norvoljazz network meeting hosted by Ian Darrington of Wigan Jazz Festival on 8 July.  Full copies of the minutes can be viewed on www.norvoljazz.org/. The pies were wonderful (!)

The network was healthy with much innovative work going on by volunteer promoters, with the Jazz North East Women make music scheme, new jazz festivals in Newcastle and Leeds and the "Fish Tales" music and poetry commission developed and promotes in venues and schools by Gill Wilde of Grimsby Jazz. The network also noted the sad demise of two long running Northern promoters - Doncaster Jazz and Leeds Fusebox.

Some highlights were as follows-

1. Jazz promoter internship scheme – the was agreed to go ahead with a joint bid by Jazz North and Norvol to Arts Council England for a none month paid internship scheme to help voluntary promoters with succession planning and provide opportunities for younger promoters to learn the jazz promotion ropes.  Northern clubs and promoters would be contacted in the near future with outline of the project and an expression of interest form to apply for hosting one of the internships
2. Emerging artists programme– interested Northern promoters were asked to offer dates in April and early May 2018 for a Norvoljazz emerging artists programme to take three groups from final year BA jazz student from Leeds College of Music
3. Peer reviews –agreed to offer Northern promoters who were interested a chance to be involved in peer review and evaluation  - and to put forward a couple of gigs in their forthcoming programme that can be offered out for peer review by other clubs and promoters

Next network to be held at Scarborough Jazz festival on Sat 23 September 10 for coffee, 10.30am start- 1.00pm. All jazz clubs and promoters welcome to attend.

Palestine Jazz dates in Leeds and Manchester

Two Northern dates for two of the most exciting musicians to emerge from the cultural renaissance in Palestine

Nai Barghouti captured the hearts of concert halls across the UK last year when she toured with the Palestine Youth Orchestra, selling out shows from Glasgow to London. She returns this summer with her Amsterdam-based band of musicians from Palestine, Korea, Tunisia and Nigeria. Based in Paris,

Mohamed Najem & Friends have quickly become favourites of the Paris jazz scene, with international performances this year including Hamburg, London and Gabon. Featuring traditional Arabic instruments alongside standard jazz line-ups, both musicians move effortlessly between Arabic music and jazz, respelling the music of the Middle East in a new musical language.

American saxman Greg Abate is touring the UK and his tour includes a number of north of England dates

A sax player who finally emerged on records as a leader in the 1990s, Greg Abate had picked up experience playing with the Ray Charles Orchestra (starting in 1973 when he succeeded David "Fathead" Newman) and the Artie Shaw band when it was headed by clarinetist Dick Johnson during 1985-1987. Based in Rhode Island, Abate has played at many festivals and club dates, mostly on the East Coast and in Europe. Although he also plays tenor, flute, and soprano, alto is his main ax. Abate, who considers Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond, and Phil Woods to be among his most important influences, has recorded as a leader for Seaside, Candid, and Blue Chip Jazz.

Greg has ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing jazz festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe. His recorded history covers the likes of Kenny Barron, Phil Woods, James Williams, Rufus Reid, Kenny Washington, Alan Barnes, as well a string of gigs at festivals and clubs around the world.

Over the summer we have visits from two bands from Argentina. On Sunday 27 August Tango & Jazz Quartet returns to the Globe for an afternoon and evening of music and dancing. We have a host of local talent including Steve Glendinning Trio, Alter Ego, Francis Tulip Quartet, Stuart Collingwood Duo and Indigo Jazz Voices. Finally, for those who would like to participate in our jazz learning programmes, we are taking bookings for our summer weekend workshop on 5-6 August.

Alt Shift J gets the go ahead

Jazz North has been awarded a grant of £71,646 from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring fund to curate, produce and tour Alt Shift J, a one day pop-up jazz festival aimed at developing younger audiences for jazz.  The festival will present new artists and use digital technology to encourage more young people to experience jazz music both as participants and audience members.  Accompanied by an extensive audience engagement programme, the project will involve young people in programming the festival and will aim to inspire and engage individuals and families who may not usually access the arts. The award was one of 8 Strategic Touring grants announced earlier this week.

Jazz North Alt Shift J will tour to Cleethorpes, Clitheroe, Middlesbrough and Penrith in Autumn 2018 and over the course of the project will:

•             16 performances by extraordinary jazz artists, selected by a network of 8 local young scenebuilders
•             24 interactive performances in local primary and secondary schools
•             a programme of community workshops and participatory activities
•             Stream each festival live to a worldwide audience

Partners on the project include The Culture House, Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues, Blue Jam Arts and Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Fusebox lights go out...

World Service Project at Fusebox

I'm afraid that Fusebox isn't active anymore. After a meeting last October and a fruitful discussion with the Arts Council, we decided to take a pause, while we wrote a bid and  restyled ourselves.

The plan was to start up again with a new format in September but as time passed and with the busy and complex lives of the musician members, nothing developed and so the general consensus was that Fusebox has run it's course. Sad to see.

Jazz into Doncaster ceases

Sorry to report that JazzintoDoncaster has now ceased due the fall in people attending with the demography of our supporters. We have been subsidising the Bands over the last 12-18 months and our funds have now been depleted.

We may have one final performance featuring the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra at a future date to be arranged.

Roy Ayres at Leeds Wardrobe

Vibraphonist/vocalist Roy Ayers is among the best-known, most loved and respected jazz/R&B artists on the music-scene today.

Now in his fifth decade in the music business, Ayers, known as the Godfather of Neo-soul, continues to bridge the gap between generations of music lovers. In the 60’s he was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist, and transformed into a popular R&B band leader in the 70’s/80’s.

Jam Experiment is a young jazz quintet who opened last year's festival with a blast and won the 2014 Jazz North Introduces Scheme shortly after their debut gig supporting Liane Carroll. The line-up includes saxophonist Alexander Bone (winner of the inaugural BBC Young Musician Jazz Award and Rising Star in the 2016 British Jazz Awards), with Rory Ingham (trombone), Toby Comeau (keyboard), Joe Lee (bass) and Jonny Mansfield (drums). All band members write for the band and contribute musical ideas equally, creating a beautifully varied set of music and a very individual, cool and funky sound. This gig is part of their 30-date UK Album Launch Tour 2017.

US saxman Greg Abate 
Greg Abate is a US jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer and international jazz recording artist. In the mid 70’s after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music, Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra and tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson in 1986 and ’87. JazzLeeds Festival17 featuring Snake Davis Band Thursday 3 August Millennium Square/Carriageworks
For the first time this year Seven Jazz are organising a Festival Day of Jazz as part of the Leeds Summer Music Festival. There will be free concerts in Millennium Square at lunchtime (12-2pm and 5-8pm), a jazz workshop in the afternoon in the Carriageworks ("How To Learn Jazz: A Beginners Guide" with Dom Moore 2-4pm) with The Big Easy, Hyde Park Brass, Slide Area Open Letter to Mingus and Tom Sharp Big Band. The headline band is Leeds supersax star Snake Davis in concert in the Carriageworks 8pm. Fish tales gets in the swim...

Fish Tales, a commission from Grimsby Jazz is an amazing new work co-written by Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy with poetry by Josie Moon. It tours the UK for the first time from July 2017 with support from Arts Council England. The music and poetry draws on the vibrant, dark and dangerous history of Grimsby's fishing trade and explores the myths, the misadventures and the realities of the fishing life.

It is a tribute to the contribution made by those in the fishing industry who were instrumental in feeding the nation and protecting it in times of war. A powerful and exciting evening of jazz and poetry evocative of any fishing port, and guaranteed to stir the memories of fishing communities everywhere.

Arrangements by Alan Barnes, one of the most renowned and in-demand composers, arrangers and saxophonists on the UK and European Jazz scene. Well known for his themed compositions Alan has brought together a unique combination of all-star musicians.

Pee Wee Ellis wants musicians!

Pee Wee Ellis, the renowned architect of James Brown’s era-defining soul classics of the late ‘60s, will lead a four-day intensive funk and soul residency, with trumpet player, arranger and composer Gary Winters (Fred Wesley and the New JBs) at the Band on the Wall Manchester from Thursday 17 – Sunday 20 August. The residency is the ninth edition of the Brighter Sound Artistic Directors Series for emerging musicians.

Brighter Sound is seeking 14 emerging professionals to form two self-contained funk outfits to collaborate, create and perform a 40-minute set of new music with Pee Wee Ellis and Gary Winters at Band on the Wall on Sunday 20th August.

Pee Wee Ellis’ career spans six decades, from his collaborations with James Brown and Van Morrison to touring the world with his band The Pee Wee Ellis Assembly. Ellis introduced the dynamic arrangements and driving rhythms that would define the emerging language of funk in James Brown's band in the late 1960's. He went on to co-write and arrange a series of smashes, including "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" and "Mother Popcorn" as well as issuing a handful of solo singles on Brown's label King, among them "Little Green Apples" and "In the Middle." Ellis also wrote the jazz funk standard “The Chicken”.

Speaking ahead of the residency, Pee Wee Ellis said, “I am excited to have this opportunity to work with upcoming musicians and contribute to the development of their on-going musical life. It is a pleasure to share my knowledge of how to be a complete musician, arranging, writing and working with other musicians to play together in a band, passing on what I've learned in sixty years of doing what I love.”

It's been ten year since the last Leeds Jazz Festival - Big City Jazz - closed it's doors. Time to start afresh! A new organisation JazzLeeds will be holding a day of jazz to be held in Millennium Square and the Carriageworks as part of this year's Leeds summer music festival on 3 August. Next year we'll have a three day festival in July and from then who knows given the fantastic players, composers, promoters and jazz venues we have in Leeds.

Who better to be the headline act at the JazzLeeds day of jazz than the Snake Davis Band. In demand with the biggest names on the music scene, as well as visiting artists from overseas, Snake Davis is regarded as one of the most talented saxophonists in the music business today

Expect to hear anything from jazz standards to a Michael Jackson or Prince hit and lots of tunes in-between. Listening to Snake in concert is a moving, soulful experience – something for everyone.
