2021 JPN Conference at London Jazz festival

Celebrated musician and educator Orphy Robinson MBE, award-winning journalist Kevin Le Gendre, music industry changemaker Paulette Long OBE and Europe Jazz Network president Wim Wabbes to appear at the 2021 JPN Conference. ‘A New Perspective’ is set to take place online and in-person at the Southbank Centre in London on the 19th and 20th November in association with the EJG London Jazz Festival. With the insight of experts from across the jazz sector and wider music industry, the conference will explore topics such as climate change, the post-Covid economy, streaming services, pathways into the music sector and the many complex levels of diversity in jazz.

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator Orphy Robinson has been an integral part of the UK jazz scene for over 40 years, rising to prominence in the mid-1980s as an original member of the trailblazing musical collective, the Jazz Warriors.

Kevin Le Gendre is a journalist, author and broadcaster specialising in black music. He’s the deputy editor of Echoes Magazine and has contributed to the likes of Jazzwise, The Guardian, The Independent, Music Week and BBC Radio 3’s J to Z. Le Gendre has also written two critically acclaimed books on the history of black music.

Wim Wabbes is the Artistic Director of Handelbeurs Concert Hall and a climate change activist who founded Take The Green Train, a Europe Jazz Network initiative that addresses environmental issues facing the arts and cultural sector. His Friday keynote will explore the importance of international collaboration and how the jazz sector can respond to the growing threat of climate change.

JPN Chair Steve Mead says “We’ve all missed the opportunity to be with peers and share experiences during one of the most difficult periods that our sector has faced. This conference is all about coming back together and embracing the challenges ahead as we eagerly look towards the future.”

Leyburn Jazz festival happening this weekend

 

Ian Shaw (pictured), Josephine Davies and Paul Edis are amongst the artists performing at a new festival for jazz fans in Wensledale North Yorkshire this weekend.

Leyburn Jazz Festival will take place from 22-24 October with fringe performances happening in the town’s pubs and main events staged at Tennants Garden Rooms.

The Garden Rooms will host Hot Cub du Nord and Josephine Davies’ Sartori on Friday October 22^nd, with Voodoo Brass Band, Paul Edis’ Triptych, and a solo performance by Ian Shaw on Saturday 23rd. The event is rounded off with an educational workshop for young people led by Paul Edis on Sunday the 24^th and a closing afternoon performance from the Pedigree Jazz Band. Free events during the afternoon at Tennants each day will feature local musicians.

Fringe events include an open-air performance in the town square by Voodoo Brass band, and pub performances from Liverpool vocalist Danny Pye, Leeds-based Alligator Gumbo and saxophonist Ben Lowman.

Leyburn is a busy market town in the heart of Wensleydale with easy access to the M1, M6, and rail links via nearby Northallerton.

Scandi jazz and folk in Reeth

 

Folk meets jazz meets world music from Scandinavia across a variety of styles, cultures and frontiers!
We are delighted to welcome Himmerland back this group of boundary-pushing Scandinavian musicians return to Swaledale next week as part of their first post-pandemic tour, performing in Reeth Memorial Hall on Thursday, October 28.

With a recently revised line up, Himmerland currently comprises Eskil Romme on soprano sax, Kirstine Haugaard Sand on violin, Sigurd Hockings on guitar and vocals, and Jakob Kragesand on bass, and together they produce a unique sound, melding folk, jazz and world music.

Hull Jazz Festival returns in November

 

Hull Jazz Festival returns from 10^th – 13^th November, celebrating jazz icons from the past 100 years alongside a spotlight on new music, with a strong focus on Hull.

The festival opens with a double bill celebrating the 50^th anniversary of cult British gangster movie Get Carter. A film screening’s followed by the world premiere of pianist and Hammond player Wendy Kirkland’s new arrangements of Roy Budd’s iconic score. Wendy’s joined by her trio and special guest jazz funk trombonist Dennis Rollins MBE in a special event commissioned by the Ted Lewis Society. Lewis, whose novel inspired the film, lived in Barton-upon-Humber and attended Hull School of Art and was a pianist on the local jazz scene.

Two more world premieres follow on Thursday 11^th November, with a celebration of Hull’s vibrant music scene and the first outings for works commissioned as part of Hull Jazz Festival’s Kickstart Commissions series. With Here: A Celebration of Hull at Hull Truck Theatre, six of the city’s finest (Vicky Foster & The Broken Orchestra, Emily Render & Tom Kay and Late Night Marauders’ Ruth Scott & James Wood) open the double bill with a programme of new music, spoken word and classic soul and jazz covers. They’re followed by violinist Matt Holborn and his Quartet, performing his new suite Here, an exploration of acoustic jazz inspired by Hull’s history, its place on the map and its people. And over at Social on Humber Street, saxophonist Dustin Kitsch presents a flamboyant new take on the big band tradition with The Kitsch Co. UV Ball.

UK jazz legend Courtney Pine performs alongside MOBO Award-winning pianist Zoe Rahman on Friday 12^th November, with the most intimate show of his long and celebrated career. SONG: The Ballad Book sees Courtney step away from his familiar small band setting to create a programme of favourite ballads that range far and wide, from Duke Ellington to Chaka Khan.

Four shows at Hull Truck Theatre on Saturday 13th November open with Hull-based producer, composer and pianist Mark Slater, performing his forthcoming album Insula. As a co-producer with the Nightports project, Mark’s created albums with pianist Matthew Bourne, drummer Max Hallett (aka Betamax, the Comet is Coming), and bassist Tom Herbert (Polar Bear/The Invisible). 

Next up, a celebration of the world’s most famous jazz city, with all-star quartet The Dime Notes digging back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920s New Orleans jazz. On the way, they’ll unearth a repertoire of stomps, blues and forgotten gems of the era from musicians including Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nicholls.

Hull musicians Paul Sargeson and Chris Sykes present extracts from Wild Side, a Kickstart seed commission that explores the atmospheric landscape of East Yorkshire, and their creative process, ideas and experiences while walking the Wolds.

And the festival closes with Billie Holiday at Carnegie Hall starring Vimala Rowe. Inspired by the legendary 1956 concerts at which Billie’s music was accompanied by extracts from her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues, this words-and-music show gives a thrilling insight into this immortal jazz talent. The stellar band is led by pianist and MD Alex Webb and features Sue Richardson (trumpet) and Denys Baptiste (tenor saxophone and clarinet).

Marsden gears up for a simpler and safer festival ..

After a tough 2020 which saw the first-ever cancellation of Marsden Jazz Festival in almost 30years, the award-winning festival will return live this weekend in October (8th-10th this year). It will be  ‘simpler and safer’ with most events happening outdoors and extra safety measures in place for indoor spaces.

“Audience research at the end of 2020, asked our supporters what events they would feel most comfortable attending this year,” said Barney Stevenson, artistic director, “Over 70% of people said that outdoor events would be most attractive, and so we have planned a festival for 2021 which is mostly outdoors”

The newest attraction for 2021 is the Peel Street Stage which will be located outside Marsden Mechanics and which is being programmed in collaboration with Jazz re:freshed, who incidentally has just been nominated for a Jazz FM award, bringing world-class musicians to the stage such as Gary Crosby and Camilla George.

The only indoor live music venue for this year will be at the impressive St Bartholomew’s Church which has been described as the ‘Cathedral of the Colne Valley’. Here you can see performances from Shri Sriram & Dennis Rollins, Xhosa Cole, Bex Birch, Ivo Neame, and more. Tickets are now on sale but some gigs are likely to sell out this week!

“We want people to feel comfortable as well as excited when they attend the festival this year,” added Barney “we have trained staff and volunteers in covid-safety, bought equipment to help us keep places clean and sanitised, and we have a flexible ticket system to allow for changes in circumstances.”

There will also be an exclusive Chronotope exhibition this year, taking place in Marsden Mechanics hall. Using 360-degree sound and screens, visitors will be transported onto Marsden Moor to listen to the exclusive performances, filmed during lockdown in 2020.

For those seeking refreshment, Street Food Alley, located immediately outside the Church, will be selling hot and cold food including wood fired pizza, Indian street food, dumplings, wraps, toasties and more. Gifts and other items can be purchased at Market in the Park, where audiences will also be entertained by amateur youth performances on the Bandstand.

We are still basking in the glory of what was a superb festival weekend (24th to 26th Sept.). Along with two wonderful warm up sessions at our club venue (The Cask), we had a truly excellent week with great attendances. Mike Gordon once again put together a very fine and balanced programme. Special thanks also go to Alan Barnes who always goes the extra mile to ensure we all have a great time.

Big gigs are back at Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues

Great live music throughout October from Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues – to start the month there’s the last of our Summer tour bringing live local jazz and blues to the beautiful villages and towns in the Ribble Valley when Red Hot Drop perform on Sunday 3rd October at 3.30pm in Waddington.

A good audience is assured for Nubiyan Twist at the Grand in Clitheroe at 7pm on Sunday 3rd October doors - a blend of exceptional players, skilled producers and inspired composers who have joined forces to create a unique, infectious sound drawing on jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, latin, soul, reggae and dance music. Presented by Music-Net, a partnership between producer and promoter Root Music and Manchester’s Band on the Wall.

At the end of the month on Friday 29th October 2021, we welcome the multi award-winning pianist Gwilym Simcock for a rescheduled concert performance. He will be flanked by two virtuosic musicians in their own right, guitarist Mike Walker and harmonica player Hermine Deurloo, for a fabulous night of music that was initially planned for the Ribble Valley Jazz Festival, 2020.
The two founder members of the much-loved group “The Impossible Gentlemen” - Gwilym and Mike – their extraordinary improvisational talents explore a rich harmonic world that is highly accessible, emotionally engaging and often jaw dropping.  Hermine Deurloo is a jazz chromatic harmonica player from Amsterdam. She has performed all over the world and has recorded several albums.
