 Good news! A small audience was allowed into the Globe at Newcastle last Sunday evening 20 Sept to see the Riviera Quartet - both a live and a livestream gig. A good sign of some normality returning...

Wakefield Jazz is aiming to return in October with a series of four top Friday night covid-secure gigs. Audiences will be limited, food will not be available, but tickets can be booked in advance through PayPal, and contactless payment will be possible on the night, with tables separated and seating allocated. More importantly, the line-up:

2nd Oct - Jonny Mansfield’s Floralegium - top young vibes-player’s trio, original and other people’s tunes, inspired by flowers!

9th Oct - Wakefield Jazz House Trio (Pete Rosser/Nick Wells/John Settle) plus special guest (tbc) - standards and beyond

16th Oct - Nigel Price’s Organ Trio feat. Vasilis Xenopoulos (tenor sax) - playing the music of guitar legend Wes Montgomery

23rd Oct - Hans Koller Quartet feat. Martin Speake (alto sax) - high class contemporary jazz led by renowned German pianist, combining intellect and Monkish humour.

Live Jazz in Leeds - September and October

Rory Ingham,  Dom Ingham, Will Harris and Jonny Mansfield – Wed 9 Sept Jazz in the Courtyard-  September Live distanced jazz gigs from Leeds in the Seven Arts Courtyard (if dry), Sunday afternoons 1.30-3.30pm and every Wednesday evening 6-7.30pm. If the weather is wet the gig will be held inside the venue (also distanced). (all this of course depends on the local lockdown situation in Leeds - if that changes we may need to reschedule concerts). Rory Ingham, trombone and Dom Ingham violin, Will Harris bass, Jonny Mansfield vibes – Wed 9 Sept Rush Hour Jazz 6-7.15 pm (pictured). Rory Dom and Jonny are all staying in Yorkshire at present – so we thought let’s hear them all together at our Rush Hour gig. Their bands and music will familiar to our jazz audience through contemporary jazz groups like Bonsai, and Elftet. Bassist Will Harris is actually coming up from Bristol too! This will be a lovely example of how the lockdown can produce some rare music! Jennie Hammond sings Blossom Dearie – Sun 13 Sept 1.30-3.30pm. Jennie Hammond interprets the songs of Blossom Dearie, a remarkable vocalist jazz pianist, and composer from the bebop era who was able to bridge the gap between west side rhythm and east side lyrical content throughout her career. Jennie Hammond has been singing ever since she can remember. She has studied the vocal greats of all time, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horne, Carmen McRae, Norma Winstone, Carol Kidd and Blossom Dearie to name but a few and was gigging by the age of 14. With Jason Scott on piano, Will Powell guitar Steve Crocker bass and Dom Moore drums. They were the winner of Album of the Year in the 2019 UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards for their album “Turas”. The trio concerts have earned five-star reviews and an invitation to appear at Ronnie Scotts’ International Piano Trio festival. Live Jazz returns to Sheffield

Sheffield Jazz announce their 5-gig live autumn Jazz season starting on 23 October at Crookes Social Club

The musicians are eager to play and we know that many of our audience are equally eager to see them and once again experience genuinely live jazz. We believe that our plans take all reasonable measures to reduce the risk of infection and we believe that our audience is now ready to support us and come to the gigs.
 
Although the Crucible remains closed, the large size of the Crookes Social Club hall does enable social distancing to be achieved. The main elements of the plan are:
•    a strict audience size limit (100 maximum)
•    entry by advance booking only, and to specified seats/tables (to simplify entry arrangements and support Track and Trace)
•    3 metre distance between stage and front tables and 1 metre distancing between tables
•    service of drinks to tables (no bar service) and doors opening earlier at 19.15 to facilitate drinks service in time for a prompt start at 20.00
•    separate entrance and exit, managed queuing, and wide corridors
•    ready access to hand sanitisers and enhanced washing facilities
•    modified heating and ventilation
•    audience members are expected to wear face coverings on arrival, departure and when moving around the hall.
•    In the event of a lockdown, we will transfer all tickets already sold to a future gig of the ticket-holder’s choice or, if they prefer, give a full refund.
Full details of the various counter-infection measures and risk assessment which we have developed will be put on the Sheffield Jazz website. We will adapt the plan as necessary according to changes in Government policy, local lockdowns and so on.

The season features excellent bands with musicians of an international stature. All gigs take place at
Crookes Social Club on Fridays at 20.00.
 
20.00 Friday 23rd October Freddie Gavita Quartet 

Freddie trumpet/flugelhorn; Tom Cawley: piano; Calum Gourlay: bass; Joshua Blackmore: drums  A welcome return for rising star Freddie Gavita whowon the British Jazz Award for best trumpeter of 2017 and his 2017 album Transient was aimed at the heart, not the head, with a highly evocative collection of compositions written for his quartet. The music has global appeal with scintillating grooves, heartfelt ballads and some serious swing. A high-powered line up of top players ensures a night to remember.

“There are other, more hyped up, players around but few have the feeling, the technique and the sound that Gavita has. Think of Navarro and Clifford Brown and their fat sound then listen to Miles. Freddie lies, not quite central, more (much more) towards Fats and Clifford and yet, still remains his own man.
