September 2015
5th – Harlem Hot Stompers – the name says it all. Rousing traditional jazz and no prisoners taken by this long time favourite group. Led by Ian McCann on banjo, we are guaranteed a full bore session to lift the spirits and set your feet tapping.

12th Sorry – No Jazz

19th – Budapest Ragtime Band – now for something a little different. On tour in the UK, this eight piece band was formed in Hungary in 1980 to perform classical ragtime sounds. Since then the group has expanded its horizons to include string instruments and vibraphone and extended the repertoire to include familiar Dixieland sounds. This promises to be one of those truly special Boston Spa sessions. Be there. £10.

26th – Spirit of New Orleans – to round off the month and a little nearer home we have this Yorkshire based group led by trumpeter Dave Pogson. Always a most enjoyable session, the band displays a wide ranging, relaxed and distinctive style from some of the North’s most accomplished musicians.

October 2015
3rd – Jim Wright’s Rhythm de Luxe – Jim is no stranger to JITS having played here so many times as a swinging member of the rhythm section. On this occasion, he leads his own group in a musical tour of the best of the popular tunes from the Jazz Age, Rhythm and Blues, Country Music and - whisper it – Rock & Roll. Jim will be more than ably accompanied by some of  Yorkshire’s finest - Frank Brooker on reeds, Ron Burnett on trombone, Phil Campen on bass and Trevor King on drums.

10th – Charlestown Jazz Band – a welcome return by this seven piece Dutch band from Nijmegan who played a superb session for us in 2013. Originally inspired by Bix Beiderbecke, the band now reflects the sounds of Chris Barber and the Dutch Swing College but with an infusion of R & B reflecting the likes of Louis Prima and Fats Domino. £10

17th – Savannah Jazz Band – and here again for their last appearance in 2015 are our Yorkshire heroes led by the charismatic John Meehan. A really fun filled session was had in August – we anticipate another to round off this year’s “Savannah Season.”

24th - John Hallam/Jamie Brownfield Quintet – and to bring a slightly different emphasis to the proceedings, we have our favourite reeds player with young trumpet maestro Jamie and a first class rhythm section with Chris Holmes on piano, Jim Swinnerton on bass and Jack Coterill on drums. The programme can probably best be described as “from Dixieland to Duke”.

31st – Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers – one for the purists amongst you. Brian needs no introduction to the Boston Spa audience and is in much demand throughout Europe as well as making many visits to New Orleans. The Stompers base their New Orleans sound on the original Kid Thomas Band and its driving, melodic, “stepping out for pleasure style”. £10.

South African Jazz event in York

Taking place from 4 – 9 September 2015, events will feature internationally renowned names in a pioneering series of live music events, discussions, film showings, public lectures, book readings and record launches exploring South African Jazz. The events will take place at the University of York culminating in a concert at the National Centre for Early Music. All events are open to the public and the majority are free.

Dr Jonathan Eato, Lecturer in the Department of Music and project lead, says:
“This is a terrifically exciting and profound project with an international reach. Exploring the legacy of South African jazz, the project aims to encourage critical engagement with musical thinking and priorities, rather than socio-historical information. The fact that this is happening in York is wonderful and is a unique opportunity to hear from South African jazz legends, and see some fantastic performances".

Highlights include:
• Catherine and Darius Brubeck, collaborators on jazz education projects in South Africa for almost 25 years, will read sketches from Jazz Life, a book in progress, documenting their life meeting remarkable people and living through challenging times (Saturday 5 September, Rymer Auditorium, University of York 5.00 – 6.15pm).

• Eugene Skeef, musician and activist, will share scenes from his film about the impact of the legendary South African musician and personal friend, Bheki Mseleku. Skeef was forced to leave his native South Africa in 1980 and go into exile because of his political and cultural activism (Saturday 5 September, Rymer Audiorium, University of York 6.30 – 7.45pm)

• A round-table discussion with Adam Glasser, South African harmonica player and pianist, Tete Mbambisa, a musician and key influence on the generation of South African exiles who transformed the London jazz scene post-1964, Nduduzo Makhathini, South African jazz pianist and composer, and Pinise Saul, vocalist and co-founder of the London-based South African ¬Gospel ¬Singers. (Sunday 6 September, Berwick Saul Building, University of York 3.00 – 4.30pm)

• A discussion on Women in South African Jazz with Dr Lindelwa Dalamba, jazz historian, Maxine McGregor, author, and vocalists Vuyiswa Ngcwangu and Pinise Saul. (Sunday 6 September, 5.00 – 6.30pm, Berwick Saul Building University of York)

• Tete Mbambisa and his ‘Big SA-UK Sound’ will perform at the National Centre for Early Music on Wednesday 9 September (7.30 – 9.30pm). Tete Mbambisa’s band will feature British musicians who worked with the South African exiles in London. With the exception of Louis Moholo-Moholo, the members of the influential exile band The Blue Notes passed on before the end of apartheid and consequently never returned to live and work permanently in South Africa. As such this is a re-joining of a broken chain of musical knowledge that left with The Blue Notes in the 1960s, was added to and developed by three decades of work in exile, but which never passed back to the South African musicians who remained at home. Mbambisa will be reunited with drummer Gilbert Matthews, who he worked with in South Africa before Matthews left for European exile.

"Dark Briggate Blues" is a new crime novel by Leeds author Chris Nickson, whose hero Dan Markham lives in a flat in Chapel Allerton and who frequents a jazz club called Studio 20 in Upper Briggate run by tuba player Bob Barclay. (Studio 20 is now the Sela Bar).

"I must read the book. I was a member of Bob Barclay,s Yorkshire Jazz Band and remember studio 20 . There are now only three ex members of the band still alive. Me.(Drums)John Cook (TPT) and. Mike Paley (trombone). So many people played at Studio 20. When Jazz concerts were held on a Saturday night in Leeds, Bob would invite the band back to the club with the promise of breakfast.

In those day most bands travelled from London by train and returned on what we used to call the milk train. This left leeds early morning and bands would be obliged to kick there heels for five hours or so before they could get back. Studio 20 offered a warm place to go and jazz. Half the Basie band played there one night with Jimmy Rushing singing. Members of Bob,s YJB joined in . Humph played with his band one night and then complained in the Melody Maker that Bob had charged him for breakfast. Bob never missed a trick!

The music also features some of Leeds’s finest musicians – including the inimitable guitar work of Mark Creswell & Jonny Flockton, and the multi-instrumental skills of musical polymath Richard Ormrod. Outstanding jazz at Jazz North East

"Well, our Summer season certainly went out with a bang - a storming, and well attended gig by French quintet OXYD. And our Autumn season should start in similar fashion on 13th September, with another French group - this time the quartet OZMA - playing two contrasting sets, the first consisting of the band improvising a soundtrack to a silent movie, before continuing the night with an outpouring of contemporary jazz vibrant with raw energy.

That OZMA appearance launches a run of gigs with a strong international flavour, reflecting the enthusiasm of overseas bands to come and play for the appreciative Tyneside audience. In quick succession we have Japanese pianist Yoko Miura, Luxembourg trio the Jeff Herr Corporation, and Oxford-born, Amsterdam-trained, and Berlin-resident reedman Toby Delius. But we’re certainly not neglecting the UK scene, so our opening Autumn series also brings in the exciting new London trio Glasshopper (featuring Hexham-born guitarist James Kitchman), the star-studded quartet Let Spin, and three of Tyneside’s leading players in Triptych.

This is, we hope, just the start of another sequence of outstanding jazz, crossing the borders of style and nationality. Very soon we’ll hear the outcome of an Arts Council funding application; if that’s been successful, then we have incredibly exciting plans for the rest of this year and through 2016. Just keep watching this space . . . "

September 25th – Noel Dennis Trio 
Trumpeter Noel has worked alongside the likes of Andy Sheppard, John Warren, Tommy Smith, John Surman, Mark Nightingale, Tim Garland, Bob Mintzer and many other top musicians and composers. For this gig he is joined by pianist Paul Edis and bassist Andy Champion.

October 9th – Bradley Johnston Quartet
One of the rising stars of the North East jazz circuit, Bradley Johnston leads his quartet in a performance that promises own original material and a contemporary take on the classic jazz repertoire. The bands influences include musicians such as Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Michal Petrucciani, Sonny Rollins.

November 6th – Jo Harrop Quartet
Originally from the North East, London based singer Jo Harrop is a young jazz singer with a captivating, rich, chocolate voice. Inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, and Betty Carter, Jo's favourite place is on stage, singing classic Jazz standards with ease.

December 18th – Northern Monkey Brass Band
Formed at the beginning of 2009, the band formerly known as Horn Dogs are a deeply funky collective of some of the finest drum and brass players in the North East of England. Led by trumpeter Graham Hardy, the NMBB were initally inspired by Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Youngblood Brass Band to name a few (as well as that bit at the beginning of Live And Let Die).  Northern Monkey Brass Band show you a good time!

James Harrison is a recent graduate of the prestigious BMus course from Sage, Gateshead. He has quickly established himself as a recognised figure on the North East jazz scene regularly working with a host of different bands including the Lindsay Hannon Plus, Mick Donnelly's Musicians' Unlimited and giving regular solo performances. October 30th - Pannonica - Zoe Gilby (voice), Paul Edis (piano) and Andy Champion (bass)
Jazz vocalist Zoe Gilby's new project features some of the North East’s most talented instrumentalists and primarily draws on the work of one of her musical heroines, American singer Carmen McRae, who recorded memorable interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s music in the 1960’s (including some of his best known tunes such as ‘Blue Monk’, and ‘Pannonica’ (written in honour of the Jazz Baroness, the muse of bebop).

November 13th – Mark Williams and Joel McCulloch guitar duo
Joel has returned to the North East after living in Manchester, and so the duo has picked up where they left off many moons ago. They will be playing a choice selection of contemporary standards from composers such as Wayne Shorter, Steve Swallow and Charlie Haden, along with a few originals.

December 11th  - Graeme Wilson Quartet
This band is all about heartfelt improvisation on idiosyncratic tunes that stay with you. The players infuse driving jazz and latin rhythms or ambient swing with their various enthusiasms including folk and rock ballads, free jazz and the dancefloor.

Saturday October 24th – Vasilis Xenopoulos, Paul Edis and the Gala Big Band
London-based star saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos is a familiar figure to North East audiences, regularly touring the area and hooking up with his long time musical friend Paul Edis. This duo perform straight-ahead swinging jazz. Paul also leads the Gala Big Band, a community Big Band based at the Gala Theatre, Durham.

Friday 20th November- Northern Monkey Brass Band
Northern Monkey Brass Band (formerly known as Horn Dogs) are a deeply funky collective of some of the finest drum and brass players in the North East of England. Inspired by Rebirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Youngblood Brass Band to name a few (as well as that bit at the beginning of Live And Let Die), they formed at the beginning of 2009.  The band have rapidly earned a reputation for lively, energetic shows featuring original music written specifically for the band, classics of the New Orleans brass band genre and well known covers in a way you’ve never heard them.

Friday December 18th – Ruth Lambert Trio 
"It's all about the intimacy of the trio. Three voices, each one as important as the other"
The Ruth Lambert Trio takes it's main influence from the early recordings of Julie London's Trio. With the intimate accompaniment of Giles Strong's guitar and Mick Shoulder's bass, Ruth swings, improvises and transforms each song into something distinctive and personal.

Doc Houlind All Stars- 3 Oct

Barry Pryme writes from our latest club to join the NorvolJazz network, Dove Jazz.

"New Orleans/Traditional Jazz makes a most welcome return to Dove Jazz Club in September for the start of its Autumn Programme after the annual Summer break.

The first Concert on Sat 19th September will see the now London-based reedsman Adrian Cox gracing the Dove podium after an absence of some five years, playing with his Quartet and their internationally renowned guest pianist Mr Tom Kincaid. It will certainly be something a little be different for the Club’s much valued patrons to sit back at enjoy.

This event is closely followed two weeks later on the Sat 3rd October by the tremendously exciting ‘Doc Houlind All Stars’ from Denmark, who will be making an appearance at the Club as ‘Dove Virgins.’ - the handle fondly given to all those souls be it musicians or punters before they make their first visit to the Club.

The Sat 7th of November sees our very own ‘Ragtime Band’ on stage at Dove for nearly their 30th Session at our venue. This band which comprises the amazing front line of John Hallam - reeds, Jamie Brownfield - trumpet, Mike Pointon – trombone/vocals and an equally outstanding rhythm section made up of Ian McCann - banjo/guitar, Howard Worthington- string bass, and the inimitable Colin Bowden behind his distinctive 1956 oak drum kit.

Our Annual Christmas Party Night will feature Manchester’s legendary ‘Harlem Hot Stompers’ on Monday the 28th December. In addition to a quality band we will have free sausage rolls and mince pies and a bumper raffle containing numerous CD’s amongst the prizes.

All of our entertainment is provided in the Village Hall at Dove Holes, where there is adequate free parking.  Our sessions carry a door charge of £8 and commence at 8.00pm with the last number finishing just after 11.00pm. The Venue has a well-stocked bar with Club prices and features a quality Real Ale for our jazz promotions, as well as the renowned Butcher Burnham Pork Pies".

Autumn Jazz grooves in Grimsby

"Grimsby Jazz starts its Autumn programme on 2nd September with an evening of beautiful music. Nikki Iles is "one of the UK's best-kept secrets, with a silvery touch and uncloying emotional warmth". The Quartet also has Lincolnshire's very own favourite guitarist Pat McCarthy, and drummer John Perry. Completing the quartet on double bass is Arnie Somogyi, composer, producer, educator. - one of the UK's leading jazz bass players and innovative new bandleaders.

The Ben Clatworthy Quartet complete the Grimsby leg of their tour on 7th October at The Old Clee Club. Ben saxes & flute, John Donaldson piano, Simon Thorpe doublebass, Matt Home drums. Benn’s distinctive, muscular saxophone and flute feature in his unique arrangements of standards from Cole Porter to Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane to the Beatles, as well as originals from within the band. The Clavin Travers Trio provide a support act for this gig so arrive for a 7.00pm start with Calvin Travers on Guitar, Sam Quintana on bass and Alasdair Wells on drums.

A change of scenery and day for Grimsby Jazz on Saturday 17th October, when at 2.15 pm there is the Grimsby Jazz Prom @ the Minster. At only £5 per adult, (accompanied children free), it will be an afternoon of exceptional music. Featuring a range of local, national and international musicians. MAPAS Hub Youth Choirs, Leeds band Pan Jumby and Tina May sings Piaf, a performance by Tina May and Nikki Iles, with Karen Street on accordion and Julie Walkington on double bass.

The Piero Tucci Quartet  appear on 11th November, The  multi-instrumentalist is an amazing talent on piano, saxophone and accordion. Completing the line up will be Jamie Taylor guitar, Pete Turner bass and Dave Walsh drums.

Rounding off the year with a great Christmas treat in the form of Alan Barnes on Wednesday 9th December. Alan Barnes has written a suite of music based on Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol.” Each piece is a Barnes original. Before each of the pieces Barnes reads from the Dickens text, switching the audience from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself. A night not to be missed."

Seven Jazz Leeds autumn stars...

Seven Jazz Leeds presents a new autumn season of the very best of international and UK jazz, mixed with brass band jazz, salsa and big bands.

Headlining the evening international concert series is legendary UK tenor sax star Andy Sheppard who brings his European Quartet to Seven Arts with Eivind Aarset on guitar and electronics, Michel Benita on double bass, Michele Rabbia on drums  (Nov 26th) , brilliant young jazz vocalist/violinist Alice Zadawski whose influences include New Orleans soul, classical training and improvised music  (Oct 22nd), Los Angeles based tenor saxman Benn Clatworthy (Oct 8th), “Mingus Moves” an all-star septet featuring Chris Biscoe and Tony Kofi on saxes, Henry Lowther trumpet, Kate Williams piano, performing the music of Charles Mingus (Dec 3), a special birthday concert for saxman Russell Van Den Berg with a quartet featuring  pianist Ivo Neame (Nov 12) and for Christmas, the exuberant Alan Barnes and his “Christmas Carol Suite”  - another all-star band featuring Bruce Adams trumpet, Mark Nightingale trombone, Robert Fowler and Karen Sharp saxophones, David Newton piano, Simon Thorpe bass and Clark Tracey drums playing a musical jazz suite based on the Dickens classic.

Our Sunday afternoon concerts this autumn include young European Jazz award winning pianist Eliot Galvin (Sept 13th) Polish guitarist Maciek Pysz  (Nov 22nd),and star saxman and trumpeter Phil Meadows with Laura Jurd (Oct 11th). We also welcome JazzFM favourites the jazz brass band Bad Ass Brass, salsa kings the Mañana Collective and two fine vocalists Jenny Smith and Kate Peters and their new group "Lady Luck". Our Christmas Party features the new band everyone in Leeds is talking about – the swinging Tom Sharp Big Band.

Our “Seven Jazz introduces” slots featuring six new talents from the burgeoning Leeds Jazz scene. We also have for the first time “Seven Jazz unplugged” where some of our events will be un amplified, taking advantage of the lovely acoustics of the Seven Arts venue.

Great new season in Sheffield

"Even though it’s still August, it’s not too early to start thinking about what’s coming up when summer’s over ... and at Sheffield Jazz we’ve lined up a great new season to bring you the very best in contemporary jazz !

The Sheffield Millennium Hall season kicks off on Friday 2nd October with European stars Kit Downes and his trio followed the week after by Liam Noble in a rare opportunity to see him playing solo.
 
 Up-and-coming innovators who are pushing the boundaries are also represented by the Alice Zawadzki Band and Sheffield-favourites Empirical, and  in November we’re pleased to welcome international star Andy Sheppard and his quartet and from the USA the New York Standards Quartet.
   
Away from Millennium Hall, in November the Beats & Pieces Big Band return after their brilliant sell-out gig in 2014, this time at Sheffield University Students Union.

And we’re pleased that we can put on two gigs at the Crucible Studio – Jean Toussaint’s Blakey Project in October and to round the season off in December, the Mingus Profiles Sextet, featuring Chris Biscoe and Tony Kofi.

The Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet features two of the most exciting and versatile musicians on the jazz scene today. With inspiration drawn from their all-time heroes of reed players, Amy Roberts and Richard Exall perform well crafted arrangements that pay homage to Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Goodman, Eddie 'Lockjaw" Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Earl Bostic, Charlie Parker and many more. Friday 4th September 2015 sees the welcome return of Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues monthly gigs to the Atrium Clitheroe, with the Simon Read Octet. Simon with be joined by two LCM tutors; Jamil Sheriff/Kevin Holbrough. Neil Yates will be standing in for Laura Jurd. Expect to hear lots of buoyant, rich horn arrangements.

Further gigs through Autumn 2015 include the Aviators Ball on Friday 2nd October- a unique project which includes Matt Owen on Bass, and Rioghnach Connelly on vocals.  A projected back-drop and elements of jazz/world/classical and folk music make for an intriguing evening

The Matt Holborn Quartet makes a much anticipated reappearance on Friday 6th November. Matt will be bringing his violin for an evening of gypsy-jazz with a modern Parisian twist.  Matt blew us away at the 2013 festival so this is a very welcome return.

A partnership with More Music has given Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues the chance to host the Partisans on 20th November : line-up: Phil Robson - guitar, Julian Siegal – Saxes, Thaddeus Kelly - bass and Gene Calderazzo – drums.

The season comes to an excellent Christmas Party finish with our old friends Jeremy Sassoon quartet on Friday 11th December.  Jeremy will be delving into jazz/blues/soul music in his own inimitable way. From Jimmy Witherspoon to Ray Charles to Paul Simon, a very entertaining and engaging way to end the year!
