"Dark Briggate Blues" is a new crime novel by Leeds author Chris Nickson, whose hero Dan Markham lives in a flat in Chapel Allerton and who frequents a jazz club called Studio 20 in Upper Briggate run by tuba player Bob Barclay. (Studio 20 is now the Sela Bar).

"I must read the book. I was a member of Bob Barclay,s Yorkshire Jazz Band and remember studio 20 . There are now only three ex members of the band still alive. Me.(Drums)John Cook (TPT) and. Mike Paley (trombone). So many people played at Studio 20. When Jazz concerts were held on a Saturday night in Leeds, Bob would invite the band back to the club with the promise of breakfast.
In those day most bands travelled from London by train and returned on what we used to call the milk train. This left leeds early morning and bands would be obliged to kick there heels for five hours or so before they could get back. Studio 20 offered a warm place to go and jazz. Half the Basie band played there one night with Jimmy Rushing singing. Members of Bob,s YJB joined in . Humph played with his band one night and then complained in the Melody Maker that Bob had charged him for breakfast. Bob never missed a trick!
