This next couple of days in Leeds is looking good...

Thursday 1 October has a welcome return to Leeds of Snarky Puppy - a collective of musicians from New York playing an infectious mixture of jazz, funk, and world music. "Raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly, a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation". The band has always used live performance as its chief form of evangelism, and maintains a more intense tour schedule than almost any band in the idiom.

Then on Friday 2 October at the Howard Assembly Room it is American pianist American pianist Aaron Parks is featured- he a leading musician in the new generation of jazz pianists and composers to come out of New York: a master of melody, and a composer and arranger of skill and dexterity. As an ECM artist, he is joined on this first UK tour by two other formidable players from that label, bassist Ben Street and someone who has played with Miles, Herbie Hancock, (everyone!) Billy Hart on drums

Peter Whittingham Jazz Awards 2015 open

The Peter Whittingham Jazz Award recognises and supports exciting emerging jazz talent. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, it has helped to launch the careers of some of the UK's top jazz stars, many with Northern links, including Phil Meadows, Roller Trio and Stretch Trio.

The £5,000 award is open to UK-based solo artists and bands in the first two years of their professional career or who are studying on a higher education jazz course.

An expert in survival medicine, Peter Whittingham was also a pianist who enjoyed the music of Gershwin, Porter, Sondheim, Bernstein, Shearing and Peterson. After his death in 1987 his family set up this award in his memory – and their connection with the award continues.

Auditions will take place at The Premises Studios, Hackney, on Wenesday 2 December 2015.

Friday October 16th (a FRIDAY for once!) is our contribution to the Headingley Festival of Ideas. Following our popular lecture/recitals with Sam Watts last year, this time we have saxophonist and jazz educator Matt Anderson performing and talking about the history of jazz and its relationship to other musical styles in the 20th century. Also on hand to assist with demonstrating the evolution of jazz from Louis Armstrong through to Miles Davis and beyond with live examples will be guitarist Jiannis Pavlidis.

Jazz UK takes off

Jazz UK, the new organisation formed from the old Jazz Services, has a new website and a full programme of events including some based in the north. Check them out!

Community JazzLabs is a new JazzUK concept of developing community-based jazz and improvised music hubs over two years, in Northumberland, The Marches, Coventry & Warwickshire and South Cornwall, through a framework of outdoor, indoor and creative presentations in diverse spaces reflecting local people and places, working with local musicians to develop creative and professional skills, and other performing arts organisations to present jazz within dance, street theatre and carnival settings, reaching new audiences and strengthening touring infrastructure by supporting local promoters.

Dissolve JazzLab is a new initiative of JazzUK’s learning and participation programme, which aims to reach out to young people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, particularly those who are disadvantage, and bring enjoyment and well-being through the disciplines and freedoms jazz improvisation can provide. Working with Coventry Performing Arts Service and SoundStorm in Bournemouth, we shall visit improvisation using a wide range of instruments and musical traditions, including folk, Asian and western ‘jazz’, in large and small ensemble formats. The participants will showcase their new compositions at Belgrade Theatre, Coventry on 28th November, as part of JazzUK’s new community-inspired #4Jazz Festivals, and in the spring at The Lighthouse, Poole, playing alongside professional musicians.

#4 Jazz Festival in Coventry - a new jazz festival held on Friday and Saturday, 27 and 28 November, at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventgry. Arun Ghosh is  delighted to be returning to The Belgrade with his Sextet to perform along with Coventry Performing Arts Service’s new Asian and world music-inspired Dissolve JazzLab project, at the very first #4Jazz Festival.

October at the Newcastle Jazz Cafe

The Jazz Cafe’s five Friday gigs in October, Fridays being when we charge admission, begin on the 2nd with Mick Shoulder’s Swing Manouche, the leader of Djangologie’s  new band taking its inspiration from Reinhardt’s later quintets. On the 9th it’s a two part concert : first the rising stars of North East youth jazz in The Early Bird Band followed up by a solo piano concert by their leader, Paul Edis.

On the 16th October we welcome, from America, The Kora Band which in the words of The Oregonian “blends the swing and intellect of American jazz with the divine poetry of West African music.” Led by pianist and composer Andrew Oliver, it features Kane Mathis on kora  plus trumpet, bass and kit drums. They are touring to promote their third recording, commissioned with a prestigious Chamber Music America “New Jazz Works Grant.”

On the 23rd October we’re delighted to be  presenting  the funkiest Hammond Organ quartet north of Watford, the Gerry Richardson Quartet, celebrating twenty-five years of collaboration. Finally on the 30th James Birkett and Bradley Johnston’s Jazz Guitar Duo take the audience from early jazz and blues, through swing and bebop, to cool and contemporary jazz.

Free admission duo gigs take place every Saturday starting on the 3rd with Northern Line vocalist Lindsay Hannon and James Harrison keys. On the 10th Noel Dennis trumpet and flugelhorn plays with Dean Stockdale piano and on the 17th trombonist David Gray gets together with Mark Williams guitar. Charles Gordon piano and Kenny Hewitt saxophones on the 24th are both newcomers to the Cafe. Ray Johnson trumpet and flugelhorn and Tom Lapworth guitar met at a Tuesday Jam and their 31st October duo is the result.

The Jazz Cafe’s celebrated Tuesday Jams are free admission events and take place on the first and third Tuesdays of every month : the 6th and the 20th October.

Southport Jazz - a busy October

The Royal Clifton Hotel Southport will be ringing to two distinctive jazz sounds this coming month. Sunday 4th sees an SMJ matinee concert (starts 2 pm) with our excellent resident Swingshift big band led by saxophonist Phil Shotton tackling the first of two concerts devoted to the legacy of Maynard Ferguson’s music. This ultimate high note trumpet phenomenon left too much music for just one gig! Concert 2 is on Sun 8 November same time same place.

Who else but the great Ryan Quigley would be up to this task and he will be making the journey down from Scotland to assist the band through the snortingly difficult charts. To lead the trombone section we will also welcome from the Beats and Pieces Big Band Mr Simon Lodge.

Later in the month-Sunday 18th evening (starts 8 pm) we will welcome from Los Angeles that superb London born saxophonist Benn Clatworthy with his quintet which includes Neil Yates (tmpt), John Donaldson (pno), Simon Thorpe (bass) and drummer Matt Home. The Clatworthy-Yates partnership has before, and we are sure will again produce some world class jazz.

Outstanding jazz talent at Wakefield

"With 10 gigs between now and Christmas featuring some of the UK’s top jazz musicians the Wakefield Jazz autumn season promises to be as good as ever. The variety of style and genres is excellent with a healthy mix of new bands and established favourites.

The season kicks off on October 2nd with the irresistible Bugalu Foundation led by conga player Sam Bell whose roots go back to the Leeds Northern Latin soul scene. Now some 20 years on Bugalu has regenerated with some super-talented young blood creating a dance friendly fusion of jazz, funk and soul with the beats of “El Barrio” – Spanish Harlem and Latin America. With all that rhythm the audience will find it hard to stay in their seats!

The season lineup follows on with the saxes of Andy Panayi and Ben Clatworthy the gypsy violin of Matt Holborn, haunting Indian vocals from Vanessa Rani Chutturgoon outstanding piano from Tom Cawley and Ivo Neame and a big band blast from Ronnie Bottomley’s All Stars. A truly outstanding array of jazz musical talent.

Can Jazz North East tempt you?

Jazz North East arfe promoting a run of international gigs with a strong international flavour, reflecting the enthusiasm of overseas bands to come and play for the appreciative Tyneside audience. In quick succession we have Japanese pianistJapanese pianist Yoko Miura, Luxembourg trio the Jeff Herr Corporation, and Oxford-born, Amsterdam-trained, and Berlin-resident reedman Toby Delius. But we’re certainly not neglecting the UK scene, so our opening Autumn series also brings in the exciting new London trio Glasshopper (featuring Hexham-born guitarist James Kitchman), the star-studded quartet Let Spin, and three of Tyneside’s leading players in Triptych.

This is, we hope, just the start of another sequence of outstanding jazz, crossing the borders of style and nationality. With our successful Arts Council funding application we have incredibly exciting plans for the rest of this year and through 2016. Just keep watching this space . . .

Autumn Jazz in the Ribble Valley

Gigs through Autumn 2015 include the Aviators Ball on Friday 2nd October- a unique project which includes Matt Owen on Bass, and Rioghnach Connelly on vocals.  A projected back-drop and elements of jazz/world/classical and folk music make for an intriguing evening

The Matt Holborn Quartet makes a much anticipated reappearance on Friday 6th November. Matt will be bringing his violin for an evening of gypsy-jazz with a modern Parisian twist.  Matt blew us away at the 2013 festival so this is a very welcome return.

A partnership with More Music has given Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues the chance to host the Partisans on 20th November : line-up: Phil Robson - guitar, Julian Siegal – Saxes, Thaddeus Kelly - bass and Gene Calderazzo – drums.

The season comes to an excellent Christmas Party finish with our old friends Jeremy Sassoon quartet on Friday 11th December.  Jeremy will be delving into jazz/blues/soul music in his own inimitable way. From Jimmy Witherspoon to Ray Charles to Paul Simon, a very entertaining and engaging way to end the year!

We are aiming to create an artists’ playground, featuring exceptional music set in the beautiful surroundings of the historic city of Lancaster.

This is going to be the best LJF to date - and we’re more excited about this one than any we’ve made so far. We’ve programmed artists that we feel are doing something truly original and exciting, artists who will create beautiful new works, be open to collaborations and be breathtakingly stunning. We’re also supporting emerging artists like never before with help from our Artist in Residence for 2015, Seth Bennett, possibly the most original British double bassist in a generation. He’s not only going to be developing and showcasing his own extraordinary projects but has also been mentoring our Youth Jazz Commission, awarded to pedal harpist Calum Macleod, and will be working with our emerging artists throughout the festival.

Time for a reminder today of Sheffield Jazz’s great line-up of bands for October

The Millennium Hall season begins with a bang on Friday 2^nd October with European stars Kit Downes, accompanied by Petter Eldh on bass and James Maddren on drums. Based in London and Berlin, these three have toured the world to great acclaim, but here they shine collectively as experimentalists and improvisers.

They’re followed the week after at Millennium Hall on Friday 9^th October by Liam Noble in a rare opportunity to see him playing solo and featuring his new solo recording, which reflects his amazingly eclectic approach.

Expect Zawinul, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Miles and Elgar !

  

We then move on Saturday 17^th October to the Crucible Studio, with Jean Toussaint’s Blakey Project, featuring Jean Toussaint on saxes, Byron Wallen on trumpet, Dennis Rollins on trombone and Julian Joseph on piano. The project commemorates Art Blakey’s  massive contribution to modern jazz, exploring his music and the amazing players that emerged from the Messengers over 40 years.

Our final band in the month on Friday October 23^rd at Millennium Hall is the exciting, emerging Alice Zawadzki Band featuring Alice Zawadzki on vocals and violin, Peter Lee on piano and Alex Munk on guitar. Producing jazz that’s inflected by soul, East European folk and classical she’s “ fast making a mark on the UK contemporary scene” (Manchester Jazz Festival).

Rock at the Clock

Promoter Ben Powling who runs the LS6 The Clock Café jazz venue on Wednedays nights in Hyde Park, Leeds, is starting a new monthly night at the same venue with blues, ska, afrobeat, salsa, balkan and more

As the first in a new series the mighty King Zepha on Tuesday 22 September (with Sam Thornton on vocals and sax) will be performing a storming set of jump blues rockteady, and ska. The revival is coming. If you're ready for thumping double bass, raucous four-part harmony and honking horns then it's time to dust off your boots and your sharpest gear and join them on the dance floor!

James Hamilton, jazz entrepreneur

Leeds Media Centre - home of "Fold"

Leeds based trumpeter James Hamilton has been busy. His record label "New Jazz Records" has a new release, of Matt Anderson/Jiannis Pavlidis Duo - "Alone Together" on Sunday 20th September. It will be launched at Seven Jazz Leeds on Sunday afternoon 20 September at 1.30pm. James is also leading a new Jazz Hub organisation in Leeds called Fold. A group of Jazz Musicians in the city have rented a recording studio in Leeds Media Centre for use as a Jazz Hub. Leeds Media Centre is the home of a large number of media businesses including "Made in Leeds" TV. The recording studio is a lovely space complete with full recording equipment and a grand piano. James sees it as being both a recording space, a space for rehearsals and as a small performance space. In this he is hoping to emulate some of the successful projects run using the studio by the former Jazz Yorkshire organisation (eg "Demo in a Day" that enabled young musicians to produce a high quality demo examples to help them get work).  James sees the importance of it being affordable, especially for young professional jazz musicians coming from places like Leeds College of Music.  It's available now - contact James on mail@james-hamilton.co.uk

The White Rabbit returns

The White Rabbit jazz in Leeds City Centre returns on Tuesday 22 September! It is being organised by bassist Tom Rivière (who is also the promoter now at Leeds Sela bar- he's a busy man!)
