The speedy return of this band following their club debut in January is a measure of how well they went down. Led by Chilean tenor man Ricardo, the band plays an enjoyable fusion of jazz and Latin American music including some excellent originals. Dean Masser/Pat McCarthy Band
Tenor saxophonist Dean and guitarist Pat met while touring with the Alan Barnes Octet Fish Tales project. They decided to form a smaller unit to explore the rapport they struck up on that tour. Adding
Ed Harrison on bass and Caroline Boaden on drums created an instant chemistry. Expect swing, interplay, standards and a couple of originals seasoned with appalling jokes. £7

Mark Chandler & Munch Manship
One of the UK’s top trumpet players Mark Chandler teams up with the legendary Manchester-based
saxophonist Munch Manship for a class double act. With Mark Gordon (keyboard), Bob Walker (bass) and Tom Townsend (drums). £5

Easy Street
Since its inception three years ago Easy Street has built a strong following, playing some of the
best but lesser known standards. Although this is the band’s first visit to the club its members have
played here with different line-ups. The rich vocals of Roger Maughan are supported by Howard
Beaumont (keyboards), Bob Malinowski (bass) and Lee Adams (drums). £5

Hull Jazz Festival goes for gender balance

Hull Jazz Festival is now a Keychange associate festival. This means the festival’s pledged to reach a 50:50 gender balance in its programme by 2022, with 50% of acts including at least one woman.

Keychange began as a European talent development programme for female artists and innovators, led by PRS Foundation. The 50:50 pledge was proposed by Keychange festival partners who wanted to show they are serious in their commitment to gender equality in addition to offering showcasing opportunities to female talent.  Since then festivals from all over the world have signed up to the pledge, making Keychange a movement for positive change. Hull Jazz Festival joins a list of festivals and other associates that includes Iceland Airwaves, Liverpool Sound City, Hull’s own 53 Degrees North, BlueDot, BBC Introducing, Manchester Jazz Festival and New York’s Winter JazzFest.

Festival Director David Porter says: “We became aware of this initiative through our ongoing work with the PRS Foundation. I knew that jazz had traditionally been male-orientated, but I’d always thought that J-Night and the Hull Jazz Festival were pretty progressive around working with women. I was shocked to find that just over 50% of our acts featured during 2017 featured no women whatsoever in their line-ups. It seems a pretty obvious decision to try and rectify that and our board are pleased to sign our pledge to Keychange.”

Next week sees the return of Jazz North's Northern Online Broadcasts festival week. Over 5 days starting on Tuesday 1 May Jazz North will be broadcasting a programme of pre-recorded performances featuring artists from their northern line touring support scheme.

There will be a total of 32 bands featured in 20 programmes broadcast at four times of day over five days. The broadcast times run from 0800 UK through to 1900 UK with evenings left free to avoid clashing with ‘real’ gigs that might be taking place.

Nigel says “The idea isn’t to replace the live experience with online streamed gigs but to use online broadcasting to stimulate interest in the artists and the vibrant northern jazz scene”.

Qwest.tv are sponsoring an online quiz competition that’s open to anyone who visits the festival website between 1-5 May. The winner will receive a 12 month subscription to the new 'netflix for jazz' broadcaster Qwest.tv.

The programmes will be broadcast in 1080p HD on Jazz North’s YouTube channel with other festival activity appearing on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

9th annual Ribble Valley Jazz Festival

The 9th annual Ribble Valley Jazz Festival hits the streets of Clitheroe and resounds around the valleys on May Day bank holiday weekend 3rd - 7th May.

It showcases the very best of Jazz in all it's genres and brings together performers from across the world to the pubs, clubs restaurants and venues in and around Clitheroe. The magnificent Grand theatre is the focus for most of the headline acts. Previous years we've seen stars such as Jacqui Dankworth, Lianne Carroll, James Taylor, Courtney Pine, Dennis Rollins, Snake Davis, Stacey Kent, Arun Ghosh and many, many more. In fact we have over 500 performers mainly from the brass, drum, swing and big bands we bring together for our Saturday street festival, Sunday picnic at Holmes Mill and our grand finale on bank holiday Monday.

Don't forget the Norvoljazz jam is on Saturday afternoon as well at the United Reformed church in Clitheroe - bring your voice or your instrument! All welcome.

Northern Line bands announced -6th edition

Jazz North, the northern jazz development agency, today announced the 6th roster of Ambassador Artists to be selected for the northern line scheme. Lucy Woolley, northern line project manager says:

“The northern line scheme aims to highlight both the quality and variety of jazz being composed and performed by artists all across the North. This year’s roster is no exception, reflecting the diverse talent living and working in the region”.

Jazz North will support these Round 6 artists with professional development and tour subsidy between September 1st 2018 and December 31st 2019.

Revealed: The Bootleg Eric Band at Wakefield

Newton/Tracey band to play their music, primarily the Bootleg Eric Suite - Friday 20th April at Wakefield Jazz. The Bootleg Eric suite was written to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Wakefield Jazz. One piece was composed and titled Bootleg Eric, a Wakefield character (Eric Parkin) who always made his own recordings of Wakefield Jazz gigs. The suite was recorded and the consequent album also named “Bootleg Eric”. The band and the music was revived at last year’s Swanage Jazz Festival. Eric Parkin died shortly before that performance.

We asked Dave and Clark to reprise the music once more to celebrate the anniversary of Eric’s death.   After more than 20 years few of the original band were still playing or available.  This is also a variant of the Swanage band - a very special Octet. This will be a rare experience and should not fail to move us.#

On Saturday the 21 April the Dove Jazz Club eagerly anticipates the return of the hugely entertaining Ragtime Band for its annual Gig. A formidable ‘All-star’ band, that has been sailing to the Dove shores for a period of time best described as being of a great immensity. Throughout this period they have maintained their huge popularity with Dove audiences in spite of a few enforced changes to their personnel they have always skilfully played the jazz music that carries the broad New Orleans label. Their rock steady rhythm section will consist of three seasoned professionals in the form of the vastly experienced Ian McCann with his banjo and guitar, the last hatchling from the famed Cottrill drum school namely Jack, and that elder statesman from the rice fields of Shropshire Howard Worthington on the string bass plus the odd vocal. An extremely strong and talented frontline will contain a reedsman who is in a class of his own Mr John Hallam with his clarinet and tenor sax, the much acclaimed and highly decorated youngish Jamie Brownfield playing his trumpet and the one and only Mike Pointon giving his all as usual on trombone and vocals. Interestingly this month’s Sandy Browns Jazz Web page, which is easily accessible, features an interesting ‘tea break’ feature with Mike giving us further insight into his interesting and purposeful life amongst the New Orleans Jazz fraternity on both sides of the pond over many years.

Our 2018 Programme will continue on the 19th May when the tussockful Tom Langham will be bringing along his congenial Cotswold chums Malcolm and Danny playing under their familiar Hot Fingers banner whose ranks will be further enhanced by having that delightful songstress Emily Campbell amongst them.

Almost no other band seems to possess the ability to perform in so many varied and diverse venues
as The Dizzies. You are just as likely to find them performing for a club full of twenty-something “cool cats” as to an audience of “traditional” jazz fans.

With a repertoire full of artistic contradictions, their appearance at many different music clubs gives
the clue as to why they enjoy such a massive appeal. Their music often crosses stylistic divides,
simply because they are so interesting musically. With influences from Hot Club, 40s swing, Blue

Note Soul and Sinatra (and often with Latin rhythms), this gives them an edge which most bands
would die for.

Currently they have four albums available from iTunes and on CD. They are equally at home
performing to 3,000 plus, festival audiences, or in the intimate atmosphere of a sleazy jazz club. As
an old-fashioned car sticker might have said - The Dizzies do it everywhere!

Jazz pianist, composer, arranger, producer, Yamaha® artist and Grammy® winner Laurence Hobgood has enjoyed a 30+year career. Highlights include: three consecutive Fellowships to the Aspen Music Festival (1990, '91, '92), being chosen as a 1995 Chicagoan of the Year in the Arts, a 2003 Deems Taylor Award given by ASCAP for the year’s outstanding music journalism, multiple Grammy® nominations and a 2010 Grammy® Award. He's played at many of the world’s most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the White House, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Tanglewood, Hollywood Bowl, and the Sydney Opera House.

Our preparations for our JazzLeeds festival in Leeds City Centre are going really well! It's a five day festival this year at various venues including the Wardrobe, the Carriageworks and Leeds College of Music.  We’re featuring international stars but also featuring some of the musicians and stories from this great city of Leeds. Deep Cabaret play Jazz@Davenham

In recent years jazz@davenham has presented plenty of gigs that cross categories, but Deep Cabaret surely take genre-busting to a new level!

With mashed-up lyrics lifted from neuroscience, slavery, fiction and Cole Porter covers all "pickled in the juices of the peat." Audiences say "Gorgeous and stirring", "Wonderful and invigorating"

Bandleader Steve Lewis describes this as the culmination of his life’s work - to make a band that fuses all the musics that fascinate him; jazz, improv, African, folk and left field pop. It’s a vision that’s reflected in an extraordinary instrumentation of guitar, clarinets, cello, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, and drums, plus the overtone vocals of Jayson Stilwell, grounded in a study of Tuvan throat singing.

What brings it all together is the quality of the musicians involved and their openness to different approaches. Drummer Ben McCabe and reedman Matt Robinson are both jazz-orientated players (indeed, Matt is the director of the Lancaster Jazz Festival), while the hurdy-gurdy and pipes are in the hands of “hardcore folkie” Paul Sherwood. Norwegian cellist Maja Bugge comes from a contemporary classical background, but, she is also a profoundly imaginative improviser. And finally the leader himself delivers angular guitar playing and cabaret inflected vocals that move between idiosyncratic takes on jazz standards and lyrics sampled from literature, science and sit coms.

It’s a rich and uncategorisable mix that has audiences initially intrigued, then invigorated, and finally entranced. Taste it, and you’ll be hooked!

Russell Corbett's Jazz North East Round Up

Sun Ra Arkestra- Gateshead Jazz Festival 

Last month the Beast from the East decimated jazz gigs across the North East. April is bound to be kinder, isn’t it? And with the Gateshead International Jazz Festival starting on Friday 6th it had better be! For three days Sage Gateshead is the only game in town. Tiptoe open proceedings playing a set on the concourse at six o’clock on Friday and from then there is a non-stop three days of concerts, pre concert talks and workshops. Topping the bill on Friday evening is…you decide – the triple bill of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Tony Allen’s Art Blakey set and Zara McFarlane, perhaps the programme of four European pianists playing solo sets – Alexander Hawkins, Kaja Draksler, Bojan Z and Giovanni Guidi, or will you choose to hear the Big Chris Barber Band?

Saturday gets under way at 10.30am with Pete Churchill’s all ages vocal workshop. Restaurant critic Jay Rayner plays jazz piano, Issie Barratt conducts a Jazz Co-op workshop ahead of her Interchange Dectet’s performance on Sunday, Sheila Jordan returns to conduct a masterclass, Norma Winstone shares a stage with American guitarist Ralph Towner and Ruby Turner is the attraction in Sage One in a double bill with Maceo Parker. More late night sets follow including Chris Sharkey’s premiere performance of The Orchid and the Wasp.

Sunday dawns early with a European Jazz Network seminar Gender in Jazz (10.30am), Sheila Jordan performs in concert with the Pete Churchill Trio with the bonus of a support set by Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion. Elsewhere in the Norman Foster-designed building you can find the regional youth jazz ensemble Jambone, an afternoon of jazz programmed by Jazz North East, House of the Black Gardenia and the top class Guy Barker Big Band with Georgie Fame. Surprisingly there is jazz elsewhere in the region! Alan Barnes and Dave Newton play two rural venues in County Durham – Boldron Village Hall (Apr 5) and Newbiggin & District Village Assoc (Apr 6). The BBC Big Band visits Darlington Hippodrome (Apr 10) and there is always a healthy contingent of ‘big names’ in the line-up. The Gala Big Band can be heard on home ground at the Gala Theatre in Durham (Apr 17) and the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band returns to Hoochie Coochie (Apr 22) to play an early evening set in front of what is sure to be another capacity audience.

Janette Mason is touring her new Red Alert CD calling into the Old Cinema Laundrette in Durham (Apr 11), saxophonist Lewis Watson has a rare outing with the Mick Shoulder Quintet (Apr 13) at Bishop Auckland Town Hall – don’t be caught out, it’s a one o’clock start, and in the evening what do you do when there are no fewer than four enticing gigs? The Customs House Big Band returns to Spennymoor Settlement, Clare Teal is at the Gala, Durham, trumpeter Tom Sharp brings in his Asaxual outfit to Opus 4 Jazz Club in Darlington and at Gateshead’s Prohibition Bar, located just off the Tyne Bridge, there is the Society Four. A tough choice.

The Paul Edis Trio opens a new jazz venue in the Newcastle suburb of Fenham (Thursday Apr 19) at St James’ & St Basil’s Church so do get along and show your support. The Alice Grace Quartet (Apr 20) launches the 2018 jazz programme at Ushaw College, Durham and finally, the last week in April sees a rush of activity at the Globe. The Newcastle Jazz Co-op presents Teduloca (Apr 22), Swing Bridge – the trio of Dan Martin, piano, Dave Parker, bass and Peter Ninnim, drums (Apr 28), and, last, but by no means least, the annual celebration of International Jazz Day (Apr 30).
