On Saturday the 21 April the Dove Jazz Club eagerly anticipates the return of the hugely entertaining Ragtime Band for its annual Gig. A formidable ‘All-star’ band, that has been sailing to the Dove shores for a period of time best described as being of a great immensity. Throughout this period they have maintained their huge popularity with Dove audiences in spite of a few enforced changes to their personnel they have always skilfully played the jazz music that carries the broad New Orleans label. Their rock steady rhythm section will consist of three seasoned professionals in the form of the vastly experienced Ian McCann with his banjo and guitar, the last hatchling from the famed Cottrill drum school namely Jack, and that elder statesman from the rice fields of Shropshire Howard Worthington on the string bass plus the odd vocal. An extremely strong and talented frontline will contain a reedsman who is in a class of his own Mr John Hallam with his clarinet and tenor sax, the much acclaimed and highly decorated youngish Jamie Brownfield playing his trumpet and the one and only Mike Pointon giving his all as usual on trombone and vocals. Interestingly this month’s Sandy Browns Jazz Web page, which is easily accessible, features an interesting ‘tea break’ feature with Mike giving us further insight into his interesting and purposeful life amongst the New Orleans Jazz fraternity on both sides of the pond over many years.

Our 2018 Programme will continue on the 19th May when the tussockful Tom Langham will be bringing along his congenial Cotswold chums Malcolm and Danny playing under their familiar Hot Fingers banner whose ranks will be further enhanced by having that delightful songstress Emily Campbell amongst them.
