Through the Northern Jazz promoters traineeship scheme you'll get the chance to work with some of the best of the northern jazz clubs to learn the ropes - Jazz North East in Newcastle, NQ Jazz in Manchester, Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues in Lancashire, Wakefield Jazz and Jazz Leeds. Brilliant training provided, they are paid posts too!

Having a local weekly jazz gig has been a dream of mine for a long time, I’m really looking forward to using this to focus on developing my saxophone playing, making new music, playing with lots of amazing people, and playing for the people of Leeds on a regular basis, massive thanks to Sela Bar in New Briggate Leeds for making it happen. 

 

September dates:

Kicking off on the 14th, I’ll be playing with Dave Kane, Matthew Bourne and John Arnesen. Rare chance to see Bourne and Kane playing jazz chord changes.

 

The following week (21st sept) is with Manchester's Johnny Hunter, Michael Bardon and Nik Svarc

On the 28th I’ll be with Jamil Sheriff Dave Walsh and Michael Bardon.

Jazz at the Lescar are back - on tour!

We’re really pleased to be presenting live music again at Yellow Arch Studios, and also at Theatre Deli in Sheffield. The Lescar will hopefully be restarting again soon, and we expect to announce further gigs in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we’re delighted that some of these gigs will contribute tracks to a Jazz at The Lescar album, which will focus on music from the Northern jazz scene, and has been made possible thanks to kind assistance from Jazz North, for which we’re extremely grateful!

Thursday 2nd September at Yellow Arch Studios: Green Tangerines A brilliant new band from Liverpool, mixing urgent grooves, brass riffs and an energetic sax/trumpet frontline, drawing inspiration from 70s jazz fusion. Jazz promoter planning resource

 Heather Spencer from Jazz North writes:

I’m working on some resources for our website to help both artists and promoters plan their events and tours. The idea is the spreadsheet will include everyone’s regular days and frequency of events by venue, promoter and region. We think this would be a really helpful tool for promoters booking touring artists and artists booking tours.It needs your help to fill it in but the idea is you just do it the one time, rather than including every date you have an event. You can just drop me an email if your pattern changes and I’ll update it for you. If you’d like to include details of a regular festival weekend etc. you can add that in the notes section. I’ll tidy up the spreadsheet so it’s nicely formatted and really easy to use. I’ve uploaded this to a google drive – please could you take a minute to slot in your booking patterns. If the way you book is more adhoc then you can just share details of this in the notes section.Hopefully 2 minutes of inputting from as many people as possible will make a really useful tool for everyone to use going forward.

JazzLeeds summer jazz in the open air 2021

Music in the open air is the theme for leedsJazz for the coming month.Come and join us at Seven Arts Courtyard on Sunday afternoons, or come and jam at the Jazz Cafe at Meanwood Valley Farm Barn, or have a special jazz and blues picnic as part of the Chapel Allerton Festival on tour at Gledhow Sport Club ground. Traditional jazz and swing from the band formed at last year's Chapel Allerton Festival - and still going!

Sunday 22 August: Imaji feat John Meikle drums, Tom Richardson alto James Hobbis tuba. Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 1.30-3.30pm payf. John Meikle is the drummer with the band Suppertime, who so impressed us with their support set for the Emilia Martensson concert last year. John has formed a great trio with Tom Richardson and James Hobbis who play alto sax and tuba respectively. He is really passionate about bringing Tubas back into jazz!

Sunday 29 August: Jenny Smith-Jon Chamberlain Quartet with Jenny on vocals, Jon Chamberlain keys.  Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 1.30-3.30pm payf. Expect swinging tunes beuatifully sung and played

Chapel Allerton Festival Jazz and Blues September 1-5th
Chapel Allerton Festival is on the move.  Over Festival weekend (Sept 4-5) we will be holding a jazz and blues picnic at Gledhow Sports and Social club, like last year . This will be family friendly and there is ample space to spread out but still enjoy food, drink and music in the company of others. JazzLeeds are promoting two indoor events during the festival 

Wed 1 Sept - Festival Rush Hour jazz @Seven Arts  6-7pm, pianist Ben Gilbert will join the JazzLeeds trio - and there will be another special guest too! payf  Seven Arts Courtyard if dry, inside if wet – 6-7.15pm payf.

Lukáš Oravec  is a wonderful young Slovakian trumpet player who plays and writes with lots of fire and creativity. His music has a distinctive sound as does his playing. Alex Garnett has been one of the leading saxophonists in the UK and Europe for over two decades, being instantly recognized by his dark, husky sound. Alex Garnett is a hugely versatile sax player who has enjoyed success as both a professional creative jazz artist, composer and arranger, and an in demand session, studio and commercial saxophonist. The two stars will be joined by the talents of Jamil Sheriff – Piano, Jack Garside – Double Bass, Marek Dorcik – Drums. “I think you will enjoy this wonderful music as well as hearing the band play live” Bob Mintzer

1.00pm Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra directed by Brendan Duffy – the legendary Leeds youth band- they’ve not played live for ages so lets cheer them on
2.15pm James O’Hara Blues band – superb Chicago blues from James O Hara guitar and vocals John Burr harmonica Paul Corry guitar and Chris Sykes drums
3.30pm The Big Easy a lively five piece swing band from Leeds, consisting of vocals, trumpet, guitar, double bass and drums. Music from the best swing swing from throughout the 20th century.
4.45 Ubunye .A vibrant seven piece Afro Jazz/dance band based in the UK, featuring threevocalists from Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa and a four piece rhythm section. The music is an inspirational blend of jazz, Isigqi-traditional Zulu music-and Afro-pop. High energyAfrican beats and traditional sounds morph into more contemporary musical styles, telling stories of human struggles with themes of universal resonance. Sheffield Jazz Autumn 2021 Season

                            Hans Koller: Charlie Parker Centenary Big Band Nov 12

 An early start for Sheffield Jazz autumn season,  the 3 September at Crookes Social Club sees the return of Fergus McCreadie’s Trio who made such an impact at their Sheffield debut in 2020. This is followed at the start of October by saxophonist George Crowley’s trio which includes guitarist Rob Luft.

In contrast for our next gig Nikki Iles leads a star-studded 18 strong jazz orchestra playing her own compositions while the following week sees the return of the sextet Hexagonal whose joyful music pays tribute to Bheki Mseleku and McCoy Tyner.

On Thursday 21 October we’re at Firth Hall for Acoustic Triangle whose melodic jazz, reflecting classical and folk styles, is built around their own compositions and those of composers, such as Ravel and Bill Evans. The following day we’re back at Crookes Social Club to welcome the hugely impressive saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes and her quintet My Iris. 

Our next gig at Crookes is the 13 piece Bird Migration: Charlie Parker Centenary Big Band, led by composer and pianist Hans Koller celebrating the music of Charlie Parker and featuring some of the finest brass players on the UK scene. The following week we welcome the Deschanel Gordon Trio for their debut at Crookes. Pianist Deschanel, winner of BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020, is already making an impact on the UK jazz scene with his music.

Next up is the Freddie Gavita Quartet, whose Sheffield debut in 2017 was so impressive and again features award-winning pianist Tom Cawley. Then on 3 December Clark Tracey returns with a sextet featuring some of our most gifted young musicians playing a mixture of bebop and post-bop jazz under Clark’s leadership.  Our final gig sees Yazz Ahmed return with a quartet, following her hugely popular gig at Crookes in 2018, playing her own compositions based on melodies resonant with the sounds of the Middle East.
