Southport Jazz on a Winters Weekend grows on!

Clare Teal 3 Feb
From Neil Hughes

I'm delighted to introduce the 13th Jazz On A Winter’s Weekend in Southport 2nd -5th February 2017. For me it has been a pleasure to programme the Festival for my first time under the watchful eye of Geoff Matthews. I have incorporated the flavours that Southport has become well known for; international artists, challenging and contempory jazz, some big band music and of course the best in British with a lovely north-west smattering.

This year the international theme features Trichotomy (Australia), Seamus Blake  (New York) and the Fabien Mary Quartet (Paris). We also have a return of The Ben Cox Band playing their sweet original tunes from their second album "Round And Round", original jazz from The Train & The River (Jeremy Price, Andy Panayi And Jez Franks) plus Jam Experiment with some beautiful music.

Our Big Band Section features two wonderful bands. On the Friday 3rd Feb, Radio 2 Broadcaster Clare Teal, joining Swingtime Big Band, directed by Jez Murphy. Then on Sunday, The Birmingham Conservatoire Ellington Orchestra  with music from The Far East Suite. featured soloist Liam Noble on piano.

A couple of changes too- this year we have added a Thursday night into the mix for those who travel from afar with Liverpool Band "The Weave". On Saturday we have a Gala Dinner as an optional extra. This year we feature Liane Carroll, award winning Jazz Singer and Pianist.

Geoff Matthews called his festival “The Best Jazz House Party In The UK” and we aim to continue that at the Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa.  If you make it to the end we close with Iain Dixon, Les Chisnall & Mike Walker Quintet – what a finish !
