International Jazz Day comes to Hull

On Thursday 30th April, International Jazz Day comes to Hull for the first time as J-Night presents a special evening of Brazilian Jazz at Hull Truck Theatre featuring Christine Tobin and her band with support from Hull’s own Lyn Acton Bossa Revista.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) designated 30th April as International Jazz Day in 2011, celebrating the role that jazz plays in promoting diversity and intercultural dialogue. Since then, the event has grown into a truly global celebration of jazz, with events this year taking place in over 160 countries. In 2015 International Jazz Day also forms part of the celebrations of UNESCO’s 70th Anniversary.

Hull’s celebrations will transport the audience from Hull Truck Theatre to the smoky jazz clubs of Brazil as Christine Tobin, a favourite with Hull audiences, presents her tribute to the legendary Brazilian jazz singer Elís Regina. With support from local favourites Lyn Acton Bossa Revista, there will be a truly Latin American vibe to the evening.

David Porter, Director of J-Night, says: ‘A key focus for our work is celebrating diversity and introducing audiences to artists performing incredible music from a wide range of cultures. As the eyes of the world turn to Hull in the lead up to 2017, it’s fantastic to be linking in with promoters and artists from across the world to celebrate International Jazz Day.’
