Fryer-Barnhart International Jazz Band
From Les Brown:
Next month's May treats at Jazz at Boston Spa
May 2nd – Frog Island Jazz Band – from deepest Essex comes this renowned band first formed in 1962 and specialising in the classic New Orleans jazz of the twenties and thirties. King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Papa Celestin and Johnny Dodds are the names associated with the group with an international reputation for its interpretation of these classic sounds.
May 9th – Dave Moorwood’s Rascals of Rhythm – a first appearance for this much praised group led by acoustic guitar player Dave. Best described as “a refreshing visit to the era of swinging, carefree jazz of the small bands of the 1930s.” A front line of two multi-instrumentalist reeds players coupled with a swinging rhythm section
May 16th – Kevin Grenfell’s Jazz Giants – another truly professional group. The irrepressible Kevin on trombone ably supported by two outstanding reeds players – our own John Hallam and Paul Harrison from Denmark. Then add Simon Banks on piano and Graham Smith on drums. A lively evening is forecast. £10
May 23rd – Fryer-Barnhart International Jazz Band - yes, here at last we have Jeff and Jim with the International Jazz Band including such luminaries as George Huxley on reeds and Gordon Whitworth on trumpet. No need to ramble on – just claim your seat early for what will be one of the highlights of the year. £10
May 24th – Jeff and Anne Barnhart as Ivory & Gold, St Mary’s Church, Boston Spa. 10.00am
May 30th – Chicago Teddy Bears – and rounding off the month in style, none better than the “Teds” with a rip roaring session of traditional jazz favourites and fun plus the added bonus of John Hallam on reeds.
