Please find the new programme attached. As you can see, we have some really interesting sessions lined up over the next two months. We have been fortunate to a degree with the weather so far - cold though it is - we haven't had any serious fog or ice which inevitably affects the numbers able to attend. So thanks to all of you who have made the effort during January. Special mention and thanks are due to John and Christine Hall for the excellent raffle which they conducted as a "Burns Night" special on 24th January. A great effort went in to the décor round the table plus a superb array of prizes.
Future gigs at the Spa
14th Feb – Maine Street Jazzmen – and to help drive away the wintertime blues, one of the most stimulating traditional jazz bands in the North which has quickly established itself as a Boston Spa favourite. Led by trombonist and harmonica player, Herbie Hudson, here’s an evening of non-stop classic numbers with the added bonus of a sprinkling of vocals from Olive.
21st Feb – Boston Spa Real Ale Festival – featuring Ron Burnett’s Mardi Gras Jazz Quartet. No evening session this week as the Hall is transformed into a Mecca for Real Ale enthusiasts with over 30 ales to choose from. The Mardi Gras Quartet will be on stage from 3.00.pm to 5.00.pm – sponsored by Jazz in the Spa. The Festival opens at 1.00.pm and entry is £5 to include a Festival glass.
28th Feb Spirit of New Orleans – and to round off the month, a highly regarded Yorkshire based band with a delightfully relaxed, wide ranging and distinctive style. Led by trumpet maestro, Dave Pogson, this band swings and entertains in equal measure
7th Mar – John Hallam + Remi Harris Trio – here we combine our number one smooth and sophicticated reeds exponent, John Hallam, with the effervescent young gipsy jazz style of the Remi Harris Trio. Both are highly regarded as amongst the best musicians in their field. A combination to savour!
14th Mar - T J Johnson – a long awaited return of one of the UK’s finest jazz and blues singers. An accomplished pianist and drummer and a true ambassador of music which ranges over jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel. A truly distinctive voice which will awaken memories within you of times both past and present. Not to be missed! £10
21st Mar – Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet – and another welcome return for two of the UK’s most vibrant and versatile young musicians and former members of the Chris Barber Big Band. Both Amy and Richard are masters of the clarinet, saxophones and flute. So – a high octane performance across the musical spectrum is guaranteed.
28th Mar – Chris Walker + Dave Shepherd – Swing Fever – and to round off an outstanding month of varied sounds, we have two of the UK’s finest reeds players. Dave Shepherd – often voted Britain’s top jazz clarinet player – has teamed up with Chris Walker to bring to us a selection of the foot tapping, memorable melodies from the swing era. £10
Kind regards
