Award-winning Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen delivers his unique style of jazz on Thus 12 March in a rare UK gig at the Howard Assembly Room. Inspired by the Japanese shakuhachi flute, the high pitch flute-like sound that emanates from his trumpet fills the room with hauntingly beautiful music.

Joined on stage by electronic musician Jan Bang and guitarist Eivind Aarset, the trio will present music from album Places of Worship - a bewitching series of tracks inspired by religious buildings and ruins. Renowned for his experimental, textured music and use of his eerily enchanting soprano vocals, Places of Worship has been hailed by critics and audiences alike. Originally classical trained, Henriksen’s playing defies boundaries, and transforms the familiar sound of the trumpet into something truly breathtaking – after all ‘nobody plays a trumpet quite like the plaintively expressive Norwegian Arve Henriksen’ (The Guardian).
Alongside the ensemble, a specially commissioned film by visual artist Anastasia Isachsen will be shown. This cinematic critical reflection of place and space (mixed live) works in harmony with the music, eking out the subtlety of Henriken’s sound.

An esteemed musician, over the years Henriksen has collaborated with Howard Assembly Room favourite Dhafer Youssef, Mats Eilertsen and vocal ensemble Trio Mediaeval to name but a few.
