Big names - big fringe!

One of the North's biggest jazz gatherings starts this Friday with the start of the 10th Gateshead International Jazz Festival (4-6 April).

Lots of big names this year - the Spring Quartet featuring Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding and Leo Genovese, Robert Glasper, Bill Frisell, Ed Motta, Django Bates with his Belovèd Trio and the Norrbotten Big Band, Courtney Pine, Polar Bear, Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and Jacqui Dankworth; Jean Toussaint , McCormack and Yarde duo and the Elysian String Quartet 

Lots of jazz fringe events too for both festival-goers and casual visitors. The exhibition of Music Photography of David Redfern & Edu Hawkins will be fascinating (all weekend). The Northern Monkey Brass Band (Friday 4th April, 2014. 6.30pm) Brendan Murphy Glass Ensemble (Friday 4th April, 2014. 10.45pm), Late Night Club at The Jazz Cafe, Newcastle (Friday and Saturday nights 11-late), Saturday Afternoon Jazz on the Concourse (Saturday and Sunday 2.30pm - 7pm) with Way In to the Way Out with Chris Sharkey and Andy Champion, GoGo Penguin, Richard Iles' Microscopic, Stretch Trio and Jambone with Rick Taylor will all entertain. Plus you can listen to Jazz Record Requests with Alyn Shipton (Saturday 5th April, 2014. 11am), or learn to play jazz at Pink Lane Jazz Co-op Play Jazz! Workshop (Saturday 5th April, 2014. 2pm)
