Sheffield Jazz’s Spring 2014 season starts with
the great Ian Shaw on Friday 24 January. The UK's finest and
most inventive male jazz vocalist. Exciting, edgy and
provocative, he blends jazz with elements from soul, blues and pop, plus a nice
line in sharp wit, honed during his days on the Alternative Cabaret circuit! With
an excellent accompanist, Barry Green, on piano.
The season features a great mix of
nationally and internationally recognised artists which should appeal to all
kinds of jazz lovers, young and not-so-young, and to rock fans too. It also
includes a new venue (the Auditorium at Sheffield University Students Union)
where we look forward to growing further our audience among Sheffield’s large
student community (as well as introducing our existing audience to a really
nice and well-appointed new venue).
Most gigs will be at the Millennium Hall on
Ecclesall Road. In addition, on Friday 14 March we welcome Jay Phelps’ Sextet
to the Crucible Studio, and on Thursday 27 March we welcome Get The Blessing to
our new venue: the Auditorium at Sheffield University Students Union. The final
gig of the season (at Millennium Hall) is the Anita Wardell/ Dave O’Higgins
Quintet on Friday 16 May.
