New Year programme at JazzLeeds

We hope you enjoy our new year programme that starts this month bringing some of the finest musicians in the world to Seven Arts in Leeds 

Our evening concerts feature four saxophone players - Tony Kofi, Ben Wendel, Mark Lockheart and Tim Garland, two pianists - Jason Rebello and Joe Tatton, two bassist Ben Crosland and Alison Rayner and one clarinettist - Arun Ghosh. Our evening concerts also feature rising stars from the Leeds jazz scene such as bands led by trumpeter Olivia Cuttill, guitarist Hyokyung Jung, bassist Panos Kotsiopoulos, and sax player Emma Coates and the solo guitar of Calvin Travers and Abtuse.

Our popular Sunday afternoons at Seven Arts will showcase the best of jazz and blues from the North of England - including New Orleans boogie pianist Dale Storr, the all-star line-up of saxophonist James Mainwairing and his quartet with bassist Mick Bardon, pianist Matt Bourne and drummer John Arnesen, the swinging big band led by trumpeter Tom Sharp, folk-jazz from vocalist GenevieveBegley and “Nefaerious”, the wistful compositions of sax player Jasmine Whalley with her band “Jasmine”, trumpeter Toby Brazier’s newsextet, the “Shapeshifters” trio, Tim Knowles’s quartet featuring sax player Emma Johnson – and many more.

Tony Kofi "Generation Monk" Thursday evening 27 January 2022 @Seven Arts Leeds. 7.30pm
Tony Kofi saxes, Matt Jacobs piano, Billy Rowlatt trumpet, Myra Brownbridge bass, Jack Thomas drums. British Jazz multi-instrumentalist sax player Tony Kofi brings a young quartet of musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra to play the music of one of the most original musicians in jazz Thelonious “Sphere” Monk with a future star band of young musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Joe Tatton group with special guest Gareth Lockrane Thursday evening 10 February 2022 @Seven Arts Leeds. 7.30pm Eryl Roberts – Drums Huw Jacob – bass Joe Tatton – piano and vocals, Gareth Lockrane – flutes Malcolm Strachan – trumpet Sam Bell  – Percussion  Aoife Hearty – Vocals
An evening of soul, jazz and blues from vocalist and pianist Joe Tatton, keyboard player with UK/US funk/soul jazz kings New Mastersounds. Joe is coming to Seven Arts with a fantastic line-up to mark the release of his new album.  Special guest, noted for his dazzling flute playing is Gareth Lockrane who has built an impressive reputation as a composer, arranger and big band bandleader.

Mark Lockheart and "Dreamers" Thursday evening 24 February @Seven Arts 7.30pm

A brand-new group led by saxman Mark Lockheart with Elliot Galvin (keyboards), Tom Herbert (bass), and Dave Smith (drums). Feted British Jazz musician, Mark Lockheart sees this new band as the fruition of both a break with the past but also a logical extension of what he’s done before.  From Loose Tubes and Polar Bear, Mark Lockheart has always remained ahead of the curve of trends and has constantly explored new directions in his own music.

Tom Ollendorff Quartet featuring Ben Wendel Tuesday evening March 1st  2022 7.30pm £20/18 conc, 25's and under (half price) £10 Tom Ollendorf guitar Ben Wendel sax, Conor Chaplin bass and Marc Michel drums. Grammy award nominated saxophonist, founder member of the band Kneebody, Ben Wendel is a rising star in the jazz firmament. Born in Vancouver, and raised in Los Angeles he now lives in Brooklyn, NY and has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer and producer. 

Arun Ghosh Quartet Thursday evening March 17th 2022 7.30pm £16/14 conc 25's and under £8
Arun Ghosh clarinet, Jamil Sheriff, keyboards Gavin Barrass – bass, Dave Walsh  – drums Arun Ghosh is a clarinettist and composer whose style incorporates jazz; Indian and western classical; folk; hip-hop; rock and experimental sounds. His Indo-jazz quartet plays imaginative music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude.

Ben Crosland: “Solway Stories" Thursday evening March 31st 2022 7.30pm £16/14 conc 25's and under £8 Ben Crosland  bass, Steve Waterman  trumpet & flugelhorn, Chris Allard  guitar Steve Lodder  piano, Keyboards, Caroline Boaden drums.Yorkshire based bassist and composer Ben Crosland has been a regular presence on the jazz scene He has fond memories of the countryside around the Solway Firth and this inspired him to write these “Solway Stories” compositions. 

Jason Rebello and Tim Garland’s “Duology” Thursday evening April 14th 2022 7.30pm £20/18 conc 25's and under £8 Two of the UK’s most celebrated jazz musicians in concert together at Seven Arts - award-winning saxophonist Tim Garland has recorded and performed with scores of legendary jazz musicians including Chick Corea, Ronnie Scott, Ralph Towner, John Dankworth and Bill Bruford, virtuoso pianist Jason Rebello’s work has traversed the worlds of jazz and rock music - his most notable and enduring collaborations have been with Sting and Jeff Beck.

Sun 13 Feb Jasmine . Jasmine is a saxophone-led quintet from Leeds, performing music composed by saxophonist Jasmine Whalley. Sun 3 April ARQ - (Alison Rayner Quintet) "Blowin the Fuse" Bassist Alison Rayner has been a leading light of British jazz for over 30 years, with the Guest Stars in the 80s and with the Blow The Fuse partnership. Rush Hour Jazz sessions:
We are reverting to a monthly format at Seven Arts 31 Harrogate Road LS73PD, 6-7.15 pm on the FIRST Wednesday of each month in 2022 – free with payf collection BUT due to renovations at Seven Arts the January date will now be as follows.
