Jazz Leeds Festival Fringe starts this week

The Jazz Leeds Festival Fringe starts this week. The build up to this year's Leeds Jazz Festival will feature music at all the festival's partner jazz venues thoughout the city.


First off, jazz returns to Leeds Corn Exchange on Sat 6 July 12-2pm with Ben Sermon keyboards, Richard Moulton drums and Frazer Kerslake bass. Then on Sunday 7 July 12-2pm at the Corn Exchange it is the turn of pianist Alecks Podraza on piano with guests. Following that on Sunday 7th July 1.30-4pm at Inkwell in Chapel Allerton there is a Festival Jam Session starting at 1.30pm and running through to 4pm. There will be lovely veggie food in the Inkwell Cafe and a rhythm section led by Will Powell on drums AND guitar to support you if want to get up and sing or play. All these events are Payf collections.

Later in the week, on Friday evening 12 July at Roundhay Golf Club on Park Lane there is ace flautist and sax player Andy Payani with the Jazz Leeds quartet, then back at the Corn Exchange on Sat lunchtime 13 July we have Eve Begley and “Nefarious” 12-2pm.


The following week it starts to get even busier with ten concerts. American jazz funk guitarist B.D.Lenz is at Seven Arts on Sunday 14th July 1.30pm, a concert also featuring the Jazz Voices Choir and Jazz Workshop Band, Leeds bassist Elior Roffe is then at the Sela Bar 10pm. On Monday we have a jazz film night at Seven Arts with films about young Leeds trumpeter Richard Turner and surrealist singer and painter George Melly. On Tuesday a Dance Workshop with jazz is to be held at Open Source Arts on Kirkstall Road, and clarinettist John Brown and guitarist Jim Birkett appear at Heart with their comic verse and jazz.

We have lots of community bands in the festival fringe too - on Wednesday 17 July  Headingley Swing Choir and Woodside Big Band share the bill at Heart in Headingley 7.30pm the same night as Grow Trio are at the LS6 cafe 8pm, Nico Widdowson Trio are at Northern Guitars 8pm and Jenny Hammond sings at Rush Hour Jazz at Seven Arts 6pm.Then on Thursday 18 July the main festival starts atLeeds College of Music with the Ronnie Bottomley Big Birthday Big Band!
