Lindsay Hannon plus at Huddersfield

Drawing inspiration from opportunities working with such jazz luminaries as Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordon and Ian Shaw, the unique and emotionally uncompromising vocal style of Lindsay Hannon is garnering plaudits from audiences nationally and internationally. Recently selected to represent the North East’s jazz community for the European commissions ‘Singing Cities’ touring project, and Jazz North’s ‘Northern line’ programme, she is currently writing an album of original materiel exploring themes of identity.

Hannon’s voice is soulful, brooding and unselfconscious in its longing, with many of the songs in her set exploring themes of wistfulness and introspection Yet it wasn’t all melancholy; Hannon can also swing with the best of them...full-bodied, lyrical vocal... effortlessly riding the beat and coming in to land gracefully at the finish. (Jazz Journal)

For her début album, ‘The Spy’, she’s arranged and written a variety of material: from an original ode to a younger sister in ‘Heather forever’ and an original set of lyrics to Joshua Redmond’s ‘Wish’; as well as interpreting the lyrical complexity of Joni Mitchell’s ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’, and the tense and brooding sound of the album’s title track. Occasionally confrontational, occasionally sweet but always committed, this is a band that never fails to create an electric atmosphere.
