21st Nov – Merseysippi Jazz Band
Les Brown writes about an exciting range and quality of bands coming up in Boston Spa
October
17th – Savannah Jazz Band – and here again for their last appearance in 2015 are our Yorkshire heroes led by the charismatic John Meehan. A really fun filled session in August – we anticipate another to round off this year’s “Savannah Season.”
24th - John Hallam/Jamie Brownfield Quintet – and to bring a slightly different emphasis to the proceedings, we have our favourite reeds player with young trumpet maestro Jamie and a first class rhythm section with Chris Holmes on piano, Jim Swinnerton on bass and Jack Coterill on drums. The programme can probably best be described as “from Dixieland to Duke”.
31st – Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers – one for the purists amongst you. Brian needs no introduction to the Boston Spa audience and is in much demand throughout Europe as well as making many visits to New Orleans. The Stompers base their New Orleans sound on the original Kid Thomas Band and its driving, melodic, “stepping out for pleasure style”. £10.
November
7th – Maine Street Jazzmen – first class traditional jazz played with verve and enthusiasm by this well respected band from the North East. The added bonus is always the addition of several R & B numbers on the harmonica from leader and trombonist, Herbie Hudson.
14th – Swing Commanders – a much anticipated appearance by this multi – instrumentalist and versatile group performing an exciting mix of 1940’s classics, boogie woogie, swing, jump jive and more. Energetic showmanship coupled with sophisticated vocal blend. £10
21st – Merseysippi Jazz Band – founded in 1948 and still going strong. One of, if not the “legend” jazz band from the North of England ever since. Until recently, a two trumpet front line in the style of the famous Lou Watters’ Yerba Buena band re-creating the music of King Oliver and Louis. Happy sounds to keep your feet tapping.
28th – Hot Fingers with Emily Campbell – a truly class act led by our number one guitar/banjo player “Spats” Langham. The hot jazz sounds of the 20s and 30s played acoustically and interspersed by the wonderfully evocative vocals from Emily. Not to be missed. £10
Jazz at the Spa is at the Village Hall High Street Boston Spa, Leeds LS23 6AA
