The jazz world seems to have bands these days with quirky names. (try spelling Paul Baxter's "Eyeshutight" correctly, especially after a couple of pints....) November at Seven Jazz in Leeds is going to be a challenge for our announcer then with concerts by "Play Out" "Partisans" "Samadhi" and ...er... "Eyeshutight".!

Let's start with details of a band that names itself the more traditional way...

Johnny Hunter quartet@Inkwell 1.30pm Sun 16 Nov
Ben Watte -tenor sax, Graham South -trumpet, Stewart Wilson -double bass and Johnny Hunter -drums.
Part of a national Jazz Services tour by Manchester based drummer Johnny Hunter group well known in the jazz, dub and reggae scenes. They have released their first recording, “Appropriations”, on Efpi Records. £7/5 concessions

"Partisans" featuring Julian Seigel and Phil Robson@Seven Arts 8pm Thus 20 Nov
Julian Siegel (saxophones, bass clarinet), Phil Robson (guitar), Thad Kelly (elec. Bass), James Maddren (drums).
Far too long since they've been in Leeds! Partisans’ energetic performances of tightly knit themes and groove-based sound bridge the gap between New York swing, European improv. and UK jam band. (pictured above).  £16/14 concessions

Sam Gardner's "Samadhi"@Seven Arts 1.30pm Sun 23 Nov
Krzysztof Urbanski- Sax , Dominic J Marshall- Piano, Sam Vicary- Bass, Sam Bell- Percussion, Sam Gardner- Drums
Their music is jazz (lots of improvisation) but also it's very groovy and is strongly influenced by Indian classical music, particularly the rhythms and grooves. It's exciting stuff! £7/5 concessions
