On Sunday 7th February - Protean Reality will be appearing with music at the 'improv and beyond' end. Protean Reality are;

Chris Pitsiokos – alto saxophone,

“Here is one more – and particularly notable – example of the most blasting jazz made today. Protean Reality is a trio using the conventional instrumentation born with hard bop and free jazz: sax, bass and drums. But there’s nothing conventional in Chris Pitsiokos, noah punkt, and Philipp Scholz’s approach. With a clear reference to the New York no wave scene of the Seventies, here jazz meets noise meets contemporary classical music. Mix Ornette Coleman, Sex Pistols and Iannis Xenakis in your mind and you’ll be close to what’s inside the package. Intensity, immediacy and forward propulsion are key words to describe this music, but there’s also lots of lyricism and abstract detail to deal with in the three long pieces of this CD".

Wakefield Jazz~Spring Programme 2016

Wakefield jazz is hosting an eclectic mix of bands between February and June, thirteen interesting artists with nearly half of them featuring singers !

Highlights include the inspired pairing of John Etheridge with newcomer Vimala Rowe, a singer who impressed all at last year’s Scarborough Festival, and Noemi Nuti on a first visit North in a band featuring trumpeter Quentin Collins.  

Pianists Geoff Eales, Gareth Williams and John Law will reap the benefits of our superb grand piano.    Liz Fletcher, Lee Gibson and Ian Shaw will sing their hearts out on separate occasions and the season climaxes with a joint presentation by NorVol Jazz and Apollo Jazz of an Orpheus project artist Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

"Hi - my father was bob Barclay and was one of the founding members of the Yorkshire jazz band and I am trying to collect as much information about his club studio 20 and the band as its a slice of social history. I'd like to document, before its all forgotten. I have a c90 tape that was given to me some 40 years ago and I would like to get it moved over to digital asap as its so old as, it has all the tracks that the band made in chronological order from the late 40s to early 50s. I have no idea of the track names or who the artists are and was wondering if anyone could help me with this project.

Cornelius Corkery’s Gypsy Jazz Band
We're back at Inkwell for just one gig this month but it should be lot of fun! This young band from York plays the music of Django Reinhardt and Louis Armstrong. Ian Shaw and Barry Green "Tower of Song" 
Bearing some resemblance to the comedian Dara Ó Briain and with a wit to match, Ian Shaw is a very versatile singer, twice winner of the BBC Best Jazz Vocalist Awards. Pianist Barry Green has been a well-kept secret on the British jazz scene for the past few years. The concert celebrates standards from the popular Jewish songbook, from George Gershwin and Jerome Kern through to Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Cohen –the “Tower of Song” in the title. John Bailey Quintet

Jazz North East Present ‘Women Make Music’

A concert and workshop series for 2016 dedicated to contemporary Women In Jazz and Free Improvisational Composition.

It’s a big year for promoters Jazz North East celebrating their 50th anniversary year throughout 2016. Following the incredible success of ‘Women Make Music’ 2015 we are proud to present a second concert and workshop series for 2016 and gratefully acknowledge financial support from PRS for Music Foundation and the Arts Council of England without whom this wouldn’t be possible.

This years series sees a total of 11 concerts, 2 workshops and a painting exhibition by the highly acclaimed international artist Gina Southgate who will be launching the series with an opening reception on Thursday February 4th at Newcastle Arts Centre.

The painting reception that evening will be followed by a live performance at The Black Swan where local electronic duo Shelly Knotts and Mariam Rezaei will utilise laptop live coding and turntables before being followed by space jazz quintet ENTROPI. A concert that unreservedly reflects the diverse nature of the full programme that will also later feature polar performances of groups such as the THERMAL THRESHOLD processed Violin Duo, through to Sue Richardson’s ‘Too Cool’ tribute to the life and work of Chet Baker.

Following Februarys launch night the series continues on March 8th (International Women’s Day) day at the Literary and Philosophical Society where Aby Vulliamy will present entirely new music composed especially for the Women Make Music series under the guise MOTHERESE, this performance will also feature local singer Zoë Gilby whose international reputation continues to grow daily.

April will see performances at Sage on the concourse at Gateshead International Jazz Festival before the series continues right through to November with further concerts at The Black Swan, The Bridge Hotel and The Jazz Café.

In total 45 musicians will perform as part of ‘Women Make Music’ and the full list of artists include Gina Southgate, Entropi, Shelly Knotts and Mariam Rezaei Duo, Motherese, Jennifer Parry, Zoë Gilby Trio, Archipelago, Thermal Threshold, Faye MacCalman, Diachronicx, Ingrid Jensen Quartet, Ruth Lambert Trio, Sue Ferris Quartet, Sue Richardson, The Lauren Kinsella Ensemble, Sarah Gail Brand, Unfurl Quartet.
